Pick 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

I can think of another bloke we should have picked at 4 Phanto.

If you are referring to Franklin, I believe that his career might have been a disaster at Richmond.
It is well known that Hawthorn spent 2 years overcoming Franklin's many problems, before he became a star.
Some of you may remember the day when Polo playing for Coburg had it all over Franklin playing Box Hill at his nadir.
And, remember the controversy of leaked doctors records that exposed the extent of Franklin's problems.
Hawthorn had money to employ the medical professionals to get Franklin right. At that time, we didn't have that money.

To me, Franklin at Richmond would have been just another junior star to pass in and out of the club, ridiculed for bad habits off-field, like so many others.

In contrast, Lewis went through the TAC system over a number of years with the Geelong Falcons, he was pre-prepared for the AFL system.

Anyway, that's history. Hope we do well in this draft.
As the window nears, our picks become even more crucial.

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

Spot on Phantom, Buddy would have never achieved his potential with us.
Polo was man of the match in that ANZAZ day fixture at Box Hill.
Our budget in the area of welfare and develpoment were pathetically under the standard required.
JON is another example of this malaise.

Would have been handy though, surely....

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

I thought this thread was about who we should pick in 2012, not who we should have picked previously. Bit over the Tambling / Buddy discussion.

Disagree, JON went to West Coast and tanked, he simply didn't cut the mustard as an AFL footballer. Tambling was another who failed to make the grade at another club.

Franklin would probably have had a stunted development at Richmond, but it's fanciful to think he would have floundered indefinitely. Given we gave Schulz 7 years, I would have thought that Franklin would have been given plenty of time to show his wares. Anyone who seriously thinks Lewis should have been picked over Franklin is being overly fatalistic IMO.

Let's not get cute, best midfielder on the board at all three picks.

Sam Mayes has a bit of the Jack Darling's about him. Dominate the carnival as a bottom ager and get picked apart by the experts at the next carnival. The more time a kid spends in front of the experts the more faults that are found in him.

I think Mayes, could be getting a rough ride.
I'd have to disagree with the 'mid @ all 3 picks call" Scoop, I'd be looking real close at the talls myself this year with the 1st pick & mids from there on.
I just think there are truck loads of small/medium mids this year all around the same mark but no stand outs that we've seen in years gone by.

Fair enough Unc. One tallish type that I rate is Tim Membrey, has kicked six (out of 13) today in a prelim. Lot of Jack Darling about him. Wouldn't mind him around the second round.

Ended up 8 out of 16. Finals form bumps you up a round.

Is it an oversight he isn't listed for Draft Camp?

We need another quality tall at least as much as more quality mids. I sincerely hope the mantra of best available prevails.

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

I Like the look of Liam McBean 202cm Ruck/Fwd/KPD

With Vickery being a Foward/Ruck & If we get McBean as our CHB that can also Ruck
We could just go into games with just 1 recognised ruckman for the next 10-12 years

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

Long time reader of PRE, first time poster. If you look at BF you'll see my rants about Vlastuin everywhere, but this is what I can tell you about him.

We are keen on Vlastuin. He is a pure inside midfielder with exquisite skills on both feet and is hungry for the contest. He is also an elite endurance athlete and will never stop running. In the Championships, he played in the backline due to a niggling ankle injury and didn't look out of place. He was awarded in Metro's bests several times. However, his time at the Northern Knights in the TAC Cup was predominantly in the midfield. What I love about Vlastuin is his attack on the ball, he is a Steven Morris type but with much improved polish, skill, awareness and ball-reading. There is no way that I would be disappointed if we took Vlastuin at 9 because we know what we will get from him. No, he isn't a Garlett or a Kennedy type who is that x-factor, pacy type player, but we do not need those type of players, they are a luxury. He is a ready to go player and will lift our side from the get-go.

As Phantom said before, and he does have an excellent knowledge of the under 18s, last time we banked our hopes on gaining Lewis at 12. Vlastuin is our man, I am already sold on him. Only inside midfielders who I would take before him would be Viney and O'Rourke, but they should go well before our pick.

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

See another Indigenous player has quit at the ripe old age as of 25! Has "cultural responsibilities" back home!................. my god we can't afford to make a mistake and draft "Gartlett" in this years draft only to see him return home a couple of years later. He might be a special talent be he might not be around long enough to show it! Keep it simple FJ Kennedy, Wines or Vlastuin, the safe options please.

Djerrkura? Let's be honest he jumped just before they pushed him. We can't not draft a player because they have dark skin. a) it's racist b) we will miss out on many talented players with a policy like that.

No not racist, its becoming fact that a lot of these Indigenous boys have a lot on their minds which at the end of the day impact on their on field performance/longevity in the game. He might well be the most talented kid in the land but if there's a strong chance he'll be gone within 3-5 years we an't afford to pick him.

Now your being silly :p They had form as well. I'm saying the likes of Wines and Kennedy etc have a lot less chance of not being around in 10-12 years time.

Buddy? Cyril? Jetta? The Lewis one because no one would want that other knob. Garlett, Betts, Yarran? Walters from Freo? Motlop and Varcoe at Geelong. List goes on and on.

Taylor......... Roberts........There are plenty that can't/don't make the adjustment to play/live in the big time. You know we can't develop these boys
