Pick 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

do u not want Garlett bc he is Indigenous or bc of attitude problems?
I just think we need to take minimal risks when it comes to drafting kids. We don't have a good record with them, and the Indigenous boys tend to have a lot more problems adjusting to the lifestyle required to become an AFL footballer. I'll say it again i'm not racist i have some very good friends of different backgrounds

MacDonald/Connors. It's not an indigenous problem. For example Taylor is a wanker whether he had black or white skin is irrelevant.

So you dont think the indigenous boys have more issues than most?

I think their problems get highlighted more than most. ie. when Turner was delisted people jumped to the conclusion he didn't adjust. Where as when a white kid gets delisted it's because he wasn't good enough. The indigenous kids from remote areas certainly find it harder to adjust to city lifestyle but Garlett is from Perth.

I think when recruiting an indigenous kid it's not about the colour of their skin but whether they pass the character testing that is applied to all potential recruits.

Yeah i'm comfortable with that i just don't think we have the ability/history to do that. And a good background check into a players issues i.e Jurrahs community issues.

i agree.
we should stick to drafting McDonald or Connors types.

Very cutting of Jackson & our drafting.

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

Just wanting to know if the B Kennedy who was in the best for Glenelg u/18s yesterday is Ben and if anyone saw it how did he go against his own age group?

Is it Jackson's responsible for more than talent spotting? Is it his fault for not identifying that these guys aren't mentally tough enough or have strong enough desire to succeed and discipline or is it club psychologist's responsibility or both or someone else responsibility to evaluate?

It is on Jackson. He has all the info.

Now your being silly :p They had form as well. I'm saying the likes of Wines and Kennedy etc have a lot less chance of not being around in 10-12 years time.

Buddy? Cyril? Jetta? The Lewis one because no one would want that other knob. Garlett, Betts, Yarran? Walters from Freo? Motlop and Varcoe at Geelong. List goes on and on.

Goodes & O'loughlin more examples of indigenous boys with issues. I agree with mtench lets steer clear of those unreliable indigenous types. ::)

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

Personally, I don't care what skin colour, nationality or religion a boy has.

There are only three factors that interest me:

1. Footballing ability - awareness, skills, speed, agility & engine.

2. Pre-AFL preparation - that the boy must have undertaken and thrived a thorough junior apprenticeship in a higher level junior football organisation, e.g., 3 or more years in the TAC or other State equivalent.

3. The RFC List management needs.

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

Jackson MaCrae BOG today including slotting 3. Shame as it will move him up the order another spot or 2.

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

Heard Troy Menzel has had some knees issues again today in the SANFL.

He's been in the best for the last 3 games. He certainly hasn't done his chances any harm at all.
The Combine will be big for him. If he has a midfielders pace or endurance then he a lot of clubs will look at him a lot more closely.

Welcome to PRE. :)

If it's an ACL then you'd have to wonder how far he'll slide, potentially he could be available at our second pick.

We are keen on Vlastuin. He is a pure inside midfielder with exquisite skills on both feet and is hungry for the contest. He is also an elite endurance athlete and will never stop running. In the Championships, he played in the backline due to a niggling ankle injury and didn't look out of place. He was awarded in Metro's bests several times. However, his time at the Northern Knights in the TAC Cup was predominantly in the midfield. What I love about Vlastuin is his attack on the ball, he is a Steven Morris type but with much improved polish, skill, awareness and ball-reading. There is no way that I would be disappointed if we took Vlastuin at 9 because we know what we will get from him. No, he isn't a Garlett or a Kennedy type who is that x-factor, pacy type player, but we do not need those type of players, they are a luxury. He is a ready to go player and will lift our side from the get-go.

As Phantom said before, and he does have an excellent knowledge of the under 18s, last time we banked our hopes on gaining Lewis at 12. Vlastuin is our man, I am already sold on him. Only inside midfielders who I would take before him would be Viney and O'Rourke, but they should go well before our pick.

Good stuff. It's a interesting debate. Pick 9 in this draft is a very good pick that is wide open depending on what way we go. Not sure I consider the Garlett and Kennedy types a luxury. In fact I think it is quite the opposite. You have to have them in your side. The question is when you get them.

I like Vlastuin. Lot of Jimmy Bartel about him. But good posting. Stick around here. We need more posts like yours that raise the bar.

If its an ACL I don't think I'd be keen even at our second pick.
