If its an ACL I don't think I'd be keen even at our second pick.

It will be a big call, very reminiscent of the Griffiths scenario.

AVOID!!!! If this is true, then I would only use a pick after our first three on Menzel.

No different to the Troy Taylor case. Different risk/reward that you take with a pick after 40.

Definitely. He will be a huge slider if this is an ACL

I would leave this one up to the medicos, if he's a ticking timebomb (like his brother) then pass, but for pick 28 or 31, he could represent a absolute bargain.

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

For the junior experts our there how does Jackson MaCrae compare to say a Vlastuin or Kennedy?

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

I was a fan of Jack Darling and still think he is the type needed on our forward line. We also would benefit from more classy mids. I am therefore surprised to see a player that may tick both boxed considered to be within our reach as a top ten pick. Jake Stringer has the same dimensions as Darling - 191/91 and on some Boards was considered an elite midfielder who has kicked some impressive bags of goals. We have passed over Darling, Franklin and Selwood in recent years because of a conservative approach so two questions; is Stringer good enough if we are prepared to take the chance and will we win a premiership by not taking chances? Who dares wins and to me the fact that Hawthorn, Geelong and West Coast have made these choices and are now top 4 suggests we should not automatically pass this opportunity without considerable due diligence.

Whilst I am a massive fan of Darling I am not interested at all in Stringer. He has been performing to the standard of a 2nd/3rd round player post injury and is still limping. He is also a selfish player and would perform poorly in our psych tests. Trust me, avoid Stringer. If you like Darling however, a player from Gippsland to watch is No.4 Tim Membrey. He is a tad short being 188cm but knows where the goals are. He kicked 8 yesterday and practically put Power into the GF off his own boot. Excellent kick, great hands, has natural goal-sense and is a very smart footballer. I would not be against it if he was taken by us with one of our 2nd round picks.

Long time reader of PRE, first time poster. If you look at BF you'll see my rants about Vlastuin everywhere, but this is what I can tell you about him.

We are keen on Vlastuin. He is a pure inside midfielder with exquisite skills on both feet and is hungry for the contest. He is also an elite endurance athlete and will never stop running. In the Championships, he played in the backline due to a niggling ankle injury and didn't look out of place. He was awarded in Metro's bests several times. However, his time at the Northern Knights in the TAC Cup was predominantly in the midfield. What I love about Vlastuin is his attack on the ball, he is a Steven Morris type but with much improved polish, skill, awareness and ball-reading. There is no way that I would be disappointed if we took Vlastuin at 9 because we know what we will get from him. No, he isn't a Garlett or a Kennedy type who is that x-factor, pacy type player, but we do not need those type of players, they are a luxury. He is a ready to go player and will lift our side from the get-go.

As Phantom said before, and he does have an excellent knowledge of the under 18s, last time we banked our hopes on gaining Lewis at 12. Vlastuin is our man, I am already sold on him. Only inside midfielders who I would take before him would be Viney and O'Rourke, but they should go well before our pick.

Excellent first post.

Thanks for the compliment too, although I think you may have misinterpreted what I had posted, or maybe I had expressed myself poorly.

I agree re Membrey, looks good. My only concern is, at his height, whether he can pull the same off against AFL class defenders. Also his size may give him an advantage against smaller U18 defenders but will not get that advantage in AFL.

I wouldn't use a second rounder, perhaps a third or fourth.

He's been in the best for the last 3 games. He certainly hasn't done his chances any harm at all.
The Combine will be big for him. If he has a midfielders pace or endurance then he a lot of clubs will look at him a lot more closely.

hi Gus,

can macrae get his own ball, and is he purely an outside player, or can he go inside as well?

Where do you think he will go on draft day?

McRae is doing a Dyson Heppell. If his combine numbers are good, he will go from a 20-50 to a 5-15.

He is an interesting one. I have never seen a more co-ordinated tall kid when he played under 12's & at that age he was in the ruck. He will probably move up the pecking order after the 8 goals on the weekend. But at 188 cm his height is lacking for a conventional KPP.

Anyone have concerns with Macrae's kicking? His action is very ungainly for an outside player.

I can see the Heppell rise up the ranks. It will be interesting to see how he goes this weekend in the GF. He is starting to rack up some big numbers and getting amongst the goal kickers.

A big game this weekend will most likely have him entrenched as a top 10 pick.

Vlaustin is NOT an elite endurance athlete, in fact his tank is ordinary and it is the big knock on him. Rest of your post is very good but I have to disagree with that bit

We will then have to agree to disagree, the combine results will settle this. Perhaps elite was used too lightly but he would have no problems adjusting to AFL level.

Combine results are just part of the picture - have to put it into practice on game days and Nick doesnt. Very good when the ball is in his area, tough as nails, but doesn't spread well.
