Pick 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

Well Garlett has been invited to train with Essendon, I'd say he's certain to get rookied and will have 12 months to sort himself out. He definitely won't be at Richmond.

We have a pic before EssenDUMB u dont think in the coming weeks we could be swayed to take a punt on him BH?

The interesting thing is Essendon have no rookie spots available, just one PSD pick, a pick which has incidentally been promised to Brent Prismall. If they do a backflip and pick up Garlett instead, they will have set a pretty ordinary precedent for player loyalty and club culture.

And as far as Richmond is concerned, Francis Jackson has said an emphatic no to Garlett so there'll be no surprises in the rookie draft. A shame really because he's exactly what the doctor ordered from a playing perspective, but I guess our recent record with some loose cannons doesn't inspire much confidence. Still, for a rookie pick, I don't see that there would be a huge risk and the upside's pretty damn obvious.

Didn't know that and agree if they bypass Brent for Garlett thats a low act...

This is what irks me can understand the rationale in not picking someone like Garlett in the ND but in the rookie draft on a 12 month contract and min wage surely worth the punt especially after hearing that we are going to take 4 rookies and no PSD pic...
Just on the preseason draft why arent we having a PSD pic like we have in previous years by inviting 6-8 players to show their wares....

Wouldn't be a problem if we were planning on undoing everything we've just spent three years trying to build. Might just as well bring back Condog and apologise for sacking him. We could have our own little three amigos tearing up the comp.
Connors, Martin, Garlett on the loose just doing their own thing. Plenty of front page publicity every week.

I agree TM. It would be another media circus. Could just see the headlines now "tiger player three strikes"! There would then be question again on our culture and probably even Chimps ability as captain.

In all honesty - I don't see that Essendon has been developing the greatest club culture of late. Knights was shafted from the job & everyone knew about it - I particularly loved Hird's "I have said what I am going to say on that subject & i don't believe it's necessary to answer that question again" at the height of the ruckus. Their reputation at the trade table is appalling & even Bomber "I am worn out carrying all the cash I will make from my Geelong property developments " Thompson agreed to, on AFL 360 a few months ago & felt the club had some way to go to be seen as a fair partner in trading talks. Who can forget the Josh Caddy "mediation" when the boy was still under contract to GC ? How they got that rammed through I am damned if I know - he was under contract....so why were GC dragged to mediation ? They refused to deal with us on Houli despite our offered pick & missed out on Helbig because of it.

I suppose if you sit on top of the tree after playing off in GF's recently & winning a flag or two, you can generate some arrogance....but how quickly the last 12 years have gone & realistically they haven't really done a huge amount in the last decade.

Fair assessment JB, the Bombers have been very ordinary of late, so much so that Patrick Smith publicly dumped the club in favour of Richmond.

That's certainly a powerful argument and one which is hard to refute, on the other hand, one could institute a zero tolerance policy and cut him the moment he crosses the red line. A one year rookie salary isn't a huge investment, the club could deflect the bad press by sacking him immediately and we would come out looking like a strong club.

Just for the record, we overlooked Franklin and Clark because of 'attitude' problems and looked how that turned out. Garlett may well be a lost cause but he may also be an errant teenager who's made a few stupid mistakes. Sometimes I think the media and the AFL forget these are just kids who are making the same blunders that we've all made from time to time.

No argument from me about the stupid *smile* young boofheads get up to. Nothing will ever change in that regard. The problem arises when the AFL, the media and the sponsors all decree that AFL players must be the leading role models of society.
The kids stuff up, no more or less than hundreds of thousands of young men do while they are growing up and it's public crucifiction time. The clubs just can't afford the backlash nowadays.
Compare what Dusty and Condog have been in trouble for over recent times to the St Kilda schoolgirl or the Milne dramas, or some of Carey and Yabletts exploits from not too long ago.
With social media and instant worldwide news happening there's no place to hide if you simply break wind.

In Dimma and FJ I trust. I'd say its pretty simple, no gun shy-ness, no racial aspect, they have learnt the lessons from Taylor, Connors, Petersen and Roberts, and maybe also Dusty, discipline and professionalism are essential, if not existing or obvious in the player, the club would, I believe, be equipped and confident to make a call that these essential qualities can be developed in the individual. I reckon the evidence is probably there that its going to be difficult to engender these qualities in Garlett. We, and all the other clubs, have made the call.

I like that we aren't being reactive, that we are developing criteria and principles and sticking to them.

You'd be drafting him just to sack him, as there's no doubt this kid has a lot more mistakes to make. Let him make them on someone else's dime.

Then rookie him. ;)

There is another player I really like and I don't think he's been mentioned as a top 20 pick. I'll share that name a bit later.
It's a shame we don't have another 2nd round pick
Hey Gus, you never did share this name. Who was it?
