McLachlan and Hocking must resign!

From Max Gawn yesterday on twitter

I think I’ll take the current game. Thanks @AFL. Hope you enjoyed the game at Coburg.

I like Maxy now.

He'll probably be fined $100K, and deregistered by the AFL for bringing the game into disrepute.

I've been saying for years, they need to concentrate on umpiring standards/consistency and goal line - score review technology. Fixing or at least improving in these areas would be far more beneficial than rule changes.

Keep Gil in the role for next year but have the commission restrict his ability to *smile* things up.

After we win the 3peat Benny can go across and fix the place up.

What about fixturing. How about we think about the integrity od the competition rather than the profitability of the product.

Also no secret we had close games when closely matched teams play against each other.

Until we get an even draw where every team plays all teams the same amount of times, the fixture really is fixed. We must be the only professional league in the world where this happens.

AFL is becoming more and more like WWE. Sports Entertainment, not true sport.

It's obvious that none of you understand. The games broken we've got to fix it. ::)

That's the problem with the average supporter they have no idea about the game, the footy "experts" have all the answers & will improve it.

Staring positions, bigger goal squares & who knows what else they're thinking of.

As many have said on this forum, the best way to improve the game is to stop making it so hard to umpire & improve the standard of umpiring.
I honestly can't remember when the umpiring has been as bad as what it currently is.

It wasn't that hard to umpire once upon a time. Rules were so basic that 2 teams of 10yo's could play a game without an Ump at lunchtime and pretty much all concur when a free was given and when one wasn't.

I hate the thought of kids at school asking for Rucks to nominate. (do they still play aussie rules at lunchtime at school?)

Obviously our fixture is compromised and there's no easy fix with 18 teams.

But just for the record - I'm pretty sure that the top US sports (NFL, NBA, MLB) have uneven fixtures also.
The teams tend to be grouped in separate divisions and conferences and can play many more games against some clubs than others.
I think it's possible that the teams playing off in the equivalent to our GF - might not play each other at all during the season.

But certainly soccer leagues always seem to have balanced fixtures - unlike things like the World Cup.

Yeah. NFL sounds convoluted.

The 2018 regular season's 256 games will be played over a 17-week schedule that will begin on September 6. Each of the league's 32 teams plays a 16-game schedule, with one bye week for each team.

Wikipedia breaks it down but I'm still confused

About what?

Yes. But I'm not interested in NFL enough to spend time working it out

With 32 teams, having 31 rounds (or even 62 as H&A) to play each other is obviously too long.

As they have divisions of 4 teams, each team plays it's divisional opposition team twice (H&A) = 6 games while the other 10 games are somehow seeded/ranked for the new season fixture depending on where they finished the season before.

As a follower, I believe 16 games per season is a tad too short.

See, we're the premiers and possibly B2B, yet the war-torn Mugpies will get more Friday nights next season. It's back to the norm of feeding these scumbags whatever they like at every start of a season. Might as well start the 2019 odds as premiership favourites no matter where they finish this season.

FRIDAY NIGHT BONANZA FOR PIES IN 2019
COLLINGWOOD will reclaim its mantle as Friday night kings next year after tumbling off centre stage in recent seasons, with traditional rival Carlton all but set to lose its privileges to the game’s most coveted timeslot.

Ideally you play each other twice. Compromise is two divisions of nine teams. Home and away against your division. Play all teams in the other division once = 25 games.

Start season mid March end early October. Pre season is currently too long. Players get a break till end of year, return January.

Cut quarters to 18 minutes plus time on.

Eastern Division : Tiges, Collingwood, St Kilda, Hawthorn, Carlton, Swans, GWS, Brisbane, GC

Western Division: North Melbourne, Essendon, Melbourne, Bulldogs, Geelong, WC, Freo. Adelaide, Port.

Finals roughly the same format with the Division finals being the current preliminary finals.

More silverware on offer. Grand final - champs from two divisions.

Pre season 3 out of every 4 years Eastern v Western Division All star games. All Australian team chosen from those squads.

Every 4th year a preseason State or Origin carnival, knockout based on seedings. All Australian chosen from best players.

Fixture would be fair. Every Victorian team would have 6 interstate trips each year. Each interstate team has their two derbies.

On occassions one division will be much stronger than the other but if you cant make top 4 out of 9 teams you cant complain about missing out on a chance for the flag.

Now someone just has to fix up the umpiring. ;D

Does this mean we'd get more opportunity to watch Eddie's fat purple head explode as Colonwood get's beaten more often playing a more difficult fixture? Think I could almost live with that for the extra laughs. Eddies purple head is much more fun that the Scott brothers playing carnival clown heads.

So it seems the media are saying that the league is going to push ahead with their ridiculous changes regardless of the footy being played recently.

What do we do?

How can we, the public, who own this game, get the message to these bozo's to leave the game alone?

That's not what I heard. Hocking has backed down a lot suggesting some minor changes will be done, but the large scale changes will need to be thought out properly. Whately has also gone deathly quiet so it's safe to assume Gil turned him around, told him to stand up and instructed him to stop all propaganda until they can get the umpires to screw up a few games.
