My thoughts?
This has been a very "Un-Richmond-like time." I can't remember a Melbourne cup field ever wanting to coach Richmond before. Usually, we just wake up one morning to read about the latest coup at Tigerland and how we had a new coach, generally a mate of the new President. The only time I can remember the club going to the market-place looking for a coach was in 1999, and then all they did was approach potentials and get knocked back until they ended up with a choice between Danny Frawley and Brian Royal.
I've always thought that whoever gets the job at Richmond this time around has more to work with than many might think. Wallace stuffed up in many ways and he has been roundly criticised, and rightly so. Nonetheless, the bones of a good side are there, it just needs some work.
The group of candidates for the job was heartening because it was clear that prospective coaches could see this potential at the club. If not, they would have cleared out long before a job offer was made to them. Generally, they hung in and kept going for the job until the club said "Thanks, but no thanks."
That inital shortlist for interview was a "who's who" of AFL coaches-in-waiting. Beating people like Leon Cameron, Justin Leppistch, Ken Hinkley and Alan Richardson is an achievement in itself. This time around, the administration is stable, the finances are good, the facilities are on the up, we have some good youngsters and now we have young coach to go with them.
There's a major cleanout coming and that will create new opportunities. Hardwick will be joined by a slew of new assistants very soon and the group that is lucky enough to be retained will have a new lease on life.
Young coach, young list, enthusiasm, hard work, sounds like fun.
Like all Richmond coaches, all he has to do is win a few games of footy and do it often enough that it sticks. The last eleven have failed and I suppose we can add Jade Rawlings to that group and make it an even dozen. Lucky thirteen!
This is not rocket Science. Thats way too easy! Good luck. Maybe this time!
