That won't make him any sort of genius mate :hihi

It also won't make Stephen Hill have any chance of coming to Punt Road. None. Settled in Perth, loves his life and the club, we couldn't offer him enough money to get to us.

Back onto the topic, will be interesting to see who we target at years end. I would target:

* Zachary Clarke from Fremantle - young, tall (203cm) ruckman/forward with skill. Very young and able to develop with our squad. Melbourne boy originally, get him home. He and Vickery would be an unreal ruck/forward combo athletically and skill wise.

* David MacKay from Adelaide - quick midfielder with a great kick on him, provides a lot of run and carry. Another Melbourne boy so the attraction would be there, adds to our fleet of running outside midfielders. Hasn't had a consistent go at it at Adelaide due to injury but is highly rated there. Had the discussion with CC Tiger at the Carlton game when we were talking about trading Edwards, this guy came into my mind straight away.

* Nicholas Smith from Sydney - quick, skilled and hard left footed midfielder that is used as a tagger mainly but can go back and do your jobs on your Milnes etc. Again a Melbourne boy, tough as they come. Adds again to our midfield rotations and small defenders, small but not too small (184cm), we lack good midfield taggers and this guy is a very good one already. Has that tough, uncompromising play I love. Good tackler.

Funny enough all three are Oakleigh boys.

These three so far are guys I would think would help us in area's we need but wouldn't cost the world.

Interesting.
Both Mackay & Smith were boys that we were quite keen on in their respective drafts, as run and carry specialists.
Unfortunately at draft times, we didn't get close to either one.

As for Zac Clarke, another one who was there for the taking, but we just didn't.

Another player who I wouldnt mind the club enquiring about is Ricky Petterd. I think he would be a great addition to our forward line as that lead up half forward. He too seems on the outer at Melbourne and might be worth having a chat to even though he is contracted until the end of next year.

Looking at the Demons last night I cant see why Petterd cant get a game at this stage. I know he has had some serious injuries of late but he is too good of a player to leave out.

Huge Tiger fan as well, his old man is still a tigers man despite the boy playing for the dees.

;) ;D

I like these guys and all would add greatly to our list. We could obtain them for minimum spend also.

We don't need to target guys that will cost us a heap. Keep your early picks to pick up your matchwinners - the likes of Deledio, Cotchin, Martin, Riewoldt, Conca, add these sort as your role players and to bump up the average of your second and third strings.

Tom ROCKCLIFF may be out of contract - a Vic and Benalla boy and barracked for Tiges! Should have a real close look at him again as they should have last time

I remember before a recent draft we were keen on Sam Blease , I think he trained with us when he was a junior as well . He was drafted by Melbourne relatively high as well but has yet to play a game due to a series of injuries .

Not sure what his body is like now but my Demon supporting friend reckons he can play and heard he is getting a little tired of playing for Casey and may look elsewhere.

Somebody like this would come relatively cheap i would reckon . Anybody know much about him ?

Broke his leg in a similar fashion to Newman IIRC.

Yeah, instead we made sure no one got Hislop before us. :help

Any of Rockliff, Blease, Smith or Mackay would be a handy addition, but it would take some doing. Rockliff or Mackay would not come cheap and Blease is highly rated at Melbourne so I doubt they'd let him go easily. Petterd signed a new deal with Melbourne last year, resisting the Gold Coast bucks to return home, so I'm not sure we'd get him.

Think Rockliff is out of the picture.
Think he was re-signed last year and he was made a member of the leadership group.
Cynically thought they made him a leadership group member to make up for not paying him what he was worth.

Interesting the Dee's also have Matthew Bate same as above, I also think he would be handy 3rd tall.

Mackay is an interesting one because I remember Greg Miller being so absolutely keen on him during his final TAC year.

I suppose Greg was a victim of his own selfless delegation that we now retrospectively wonder why such a player didn't make it to Richmond.

There were a few like that during Greg's time. Remember how he loved both Hampson & Renouf. Could've had both and got neither, although Renouf still needs to learn how to kick a ball properly.

Ah well, what you lose with one hand, you gain with the other.

Sometimes you just need a Footy Manager who's prepared to put his foot down when it counts.

Must say, well done Craig, with FJ and the recruiting team's help.

This is the mantra moving forward. The method we used in the 2010 off season is clearly our mantra. Low cost gets, giving up players that we feel aren't going to fit into our game plan, pick up a extra draft pick or two every year, get the right kids into your system with the right skill set and just build the talent base of the list.

List management and getting your list better is not a sprint event. It's a marathon. You may be able to speed the process up with one good off season (it appears that 2010 was such a off season) but one bad off season (St Kilda 2009) will cost you so much more then a good one.

Great posting. Fully agree.

Yep we have discussed this before when we discussed the recruitment of Houli and Grigg.

It is obviously the mantra the the club is looking at. We are luckier than most development teams, we have more than a handful of what I deem to be "matchwinners". It was why I thought we would end up beating North, they lack the star quality in their youth that we have. We keep hold of our early picks and recruit matchwinners, but add depth by recruiting guys who can play a role for us whilst ridding ourselves of guys who are not up to it then we are on the road to success. Dimma has proven he can get the boys playing competitive football with passion and playing to the gameplan, it's now just improving the list, getting experience and building the bodies to be of an elite standard.

Looking forward to seeing what we have in store this off season.
