2024 Draft Thread

I dunno if we'd be addressing our number one deficiency at the moment with those pics from ESPN. Speed through the midfield. We've got a few big bodied mids already.
Different types. Lalor especially. I would swap Smillie for Jagga to get that different mix.

Is Lalor the best player available or has someone simply linked him to Richmond, who have the first pick? Have the footy gods of the internet just rolled with an idea in the absence of actual information? If an idea is repeated often enough it becomes almost like a fact.

A couple of months ago, he was being talked about as a top 10 certainly, but not a number 1. Then Richmond became the obvious wooden spooner and he jumped up the rankings, possibly without justication. Was he injured late in the year? Was he an All- Australian? Does his body of work speak for itself? What was his combine like? Does he really look like Dusty?

Not saying we shouldn’t draft him, just thinking out loud and not quite sure if the fuss is just hyperbole. The Tigers could be looking in a totally different direction, or maybe they think a later pick will do the trick and that is the link?

Wrong ideas spread though the internet the faster than wildfire.
It was like a cycle. First it was Jagga, then FOS and it’s settled on Lalor. A lot were crazy about Smillie earlier in the year, too.

I see Twomey is not expecting any draft swaps before draft day now so if they are going to happen it will have to be under pressure on the night. Could be a very long first round with the full five minutes being taken on a lot of occasions.
I'm thinking of booking accomodating in Richmond after the draft night. Can see it taking until 11pm or so..

Anyway, moving on. Our draft hand will not be truly finalised until draft night. With such broad based interpretations of rankings of players by clubs, there will be a lot of shifting and positioning on the actual night I reckon.

It will be a long couple of nights with late trade offers flying around more than usual.

Smillie, you're out in the world today / Smillie, you're all on your own / Smillie, hey, they say you're a man today / Boy, how you've grown

This is why I've been bullish on Draper
No one in the top 6 has his speed.

I keep on coming back in my mind to two things Blair said after the trade period

1. The aim was to maximise our picks in the 1st round.

That doesn’t mean that we would use them all but when asked if we would use them all or trade picks his answer was

2. Everything is on the table but we will only do what is best for Richmond FC.

The fact that there are no trades yet simply means to me that he is not satisfied that whatever has been offered meets criteria 2. That’s a good thing and makes me believe that unless we get a great offer ( or offers) we are very happy to stay where we are.

Nothing wrong with that.

My own view is that even if we don’t deal with north or st kilda or anyone else then we are going to get a lot of interest in our later picks as a few clubs try and get back into the draft. It appears to me that Blair is only accepting very good offers, and it is possible we may not even do that.

How much does it cost to sponsor a new draftee nowadays ?
I dunno, but I dipped out a while ago when I wasn't making many games. Something about paying $800-900 a game made my future wife-to-be anxious when saving a house deposit...
My guess is it'd be around $3k, but who knows whether flagflation made things go out of control.

Take the picks to the draft and use them all. It looks like this draft is going to go off the reservation pretty quickly. The clubs will get onto different pages after a few picks and strange things will happen all through the draft.

It’s a great chance to address our biggest issue, being that we have the weakest group of under 23s in the competition. A few good choices could change that in one night. Why take fewer picks this year? We need a new midfield and a couple of talented talls, minimum.

Take them now while the chance is there.

So the 2 mock drafts out today - just shows the quality on offer for the tigers if we use all 8 picks

My only comment is that I am not sure of the Smillie and Trainor love - if you swap those picks with the player taken straight after, I will be doing cartwheels.

ESPN. Cavanah / ? (Herald Sun)

1. Lalor. Lalor
Tauru. Tauru

7. Smillie. Smillie
Smith. Langford

12. Armstrong. Trainor
13. Allen. Shanahan
Lindsey. Allen

21. Trainor. Hynes
Matt Whitlock. Faull

24. Hynes. Dodson
Davis Dattoli

27. Dodson. Matt Witlock

Rd 2
28. Barrat
Gross

32. Faull (for those still grieving)

Interesting to see if we do pass on Jagga if available at 7.

Bo Allen at 13 would be a great get.

Effectively we would have added three big bodied mids in Lalor, Smillie and Allen.
If we keep 6 10, 11 and 18, 20, 23, (and trade 24) there will be some very promising mids available at all points.
In that event I don’t think we would take Smillie at 6 (7).
Maybe Langford if available but otherwise
my personal favourite, Tauru.
