2024 Draft Thread

Looking at the BF phantom draft, I'd be a bit disappointed if this was the outcome.

1 Lalor
7 Tauru
11 Allan
13 Travaglia
21 Hynes
23 Dodson
27 Faull
28 Sims

No problem with the end of it, but if we come out of the top 5 picks with just 1 pure mid, it'll be disappointing. Yes Allan, Travaglia and Hynes "could" end up as mids, but they have played a lot of their footy either as HBF's (Allan and Travaglia) or HFF (Hynes). They have been rotating mids, but we need pure mids.

The above is the exact reason why I think we trade up. Whilst Tauru may be good, missing out on the top echelon of mids in the draft for us (other than Lalor) would be a bit of a disaster, and to then pass on mids to pick up flankers would just be double downing IMO. They might all become good players, but they aren't a good mix for us.
All those players are draftable, I have them all on my shortlist so from that perspective it's solid. But you are entirely correct, minimum of 2 mids is required.

Maybe the 6+11 for 2 and F1 is still possibly on the table, and they are interviewing players that they weren't expecting to be in that range of early to mid teens.
That is the only other possibility I see. But I still reckon we've closed down 6 with them. 6 is a known quantity and in a decent draft. F1 isn't.

One way or another, I'll be surprised if we don't land pick 2.

It's 100% better to wait on any trades for Pick 2 unless we already know the top 5 is locked in. We might as well do it on draft night instead of now, as we will only have a clearer picture of who will be available at 6.

We won't be less informed on draft night, we'll only be more informed, and we have Pick 1, so nothing can change by the time we'd be able to bid on Pick 2.

Exactly. The more information the better.

Could Not Melbourne be interviewing on the basis of 6 + 18? (I'm not across the interviews/medicals bit: who reported that?)
I would imagine a lot of clubs are doing a lot of interviews to know how they value certain pick ranges- ie North might find 2 guys who "should" be available at 15 & 16 to make a swap with GWS worth while. Or they might decide that there value isnt there.
Likewise we would be ranking guys into the 40s to know how hard we should haggle for a later pick or 2 to be thrown into any swaps. Or we might decide they arent worth it.

With live trading almost any club can target picks at almost any range.

Agree OhPoshO on your core message.

But, and I may be wrong, but Allan is a mid. He's projected as at worst a hbf because of his size. Thats his floor.
But he was a starting mid for WA in the champs, coming back from injury.
And a centre square mid (maybe not starting mid) as an 18yo in the wafl finals

Note I may stand corrected as I didnt seen these games live

With lolnorf interviewing players that may go in mid to late round 1
Is there a chance they've already reached agreement for pick 2 but AFL wants details not to be released before pick trade deadline or on draft night?
