2024 Draft Thread

Yeah. A deal like that is only going to work for them if they are willing to lose Tauru and take a risk on Armstrong, or they are not as set on talls as is being reported.
That's right. At the end of the day, I'm suggesting that whilst they like Tauru, do they like him enough to sacrifice 2 very good players ?

I'm betting not, and that's why they are interviewing and checking out a bunch of kids around the teens.

As an example, does an Allan/Lindsay + Faull combo look better than a Tauru on his own ? Does to me, personally.

You may well be right.

I guess on the other side do we like O’Sullivan enough to sacrifice two good players at 11 and 18? The difference for us is we have lots of other picks I guess.

It’s all judgement in the end

I see Twomey is not expecting any draft swaps before draft day now so if they are going to happen it will have to be under pressure on the night. Could be a very long first round with the full five minutes being taken on a lot of occasions.

All for AFL theatrics as viewers hang on to every pick, recruiters on the phones wheeling & dealing, clubs asking for an extension of time the suspense and drama of it all.

They've probably already got the swaps settled, and as you said Hirsute you wiry, wooly Angora, they'll play it out on draft night for the drama.

Could Not Melbourne be interviewing on the basis of 6 + 18? (I'm not across the interviews/medicals bit: who reported that?)
The interviews bit is the only part of the scuttlebutt that I take seriously and that's because the media types get their information from player agents primarily and they would know who interviews their players obviously.

However all the fact that North are interviewing players in that pick range tells us is that they have not closed the door on trading pick 2 and they are doing their homework.

I got my information on us interviewing a particular player from someone who knows a recruiter at another club and he was told by the agent that his player had been interviewed by Richmond. Clearly the Twomeys of the world would have that information coming from everywhere and it is probably pretty accurate.

I wonder how many players we have interviewed? Must be 40 or more you would think.

Lalor
FOS
Langford
Lindsay
Smillie
Draper
Smith
Armstrong
Allan
Travaglia?
Tauru

Maybe
Reid?

That look like the top dozen in something like that order?

Any names missing from the dozen?

Looking at the BF phantom draft, I'd be a bit disappointed if this was the outcome.

1 Lalor
7 Tauru
11 Allan
13 Travaglia
21 Hynes
23 Dodson
27 Faull
28 Sims

No problem with the end of it, but if we come out of the top 5 picks with just 1 pure mid, it'll be disappointing. Yes Allan, Travaglia and Hynes "could" end up as mids, but they have played a lot of their footy either as HBF's (Allan and Travaglia) or HFF (Hynes). They have been rotating mids, but we need pure mids.

The above is the exact reason why I think we trade up. Whilst Tauru may be good, missing out on the top echelon of mids in the draft for us (other than Lalor) would be a bit of a disaster, and to then pass on mids to pick up flankers would just be double downing IMO. They might all become good players, but they aren't a good mix for us.

They could, but we'd be paying way overs so I doubt it. Plus, Norf would want to get a great deal like that locked away right now. But they haven't.

Maybe the 6+11 for 2 and F1 is still possibly on the table, and they are interviewing players that they weren't expecting to be in that range of early to mid teens. They could also potentially trade that 11 down to 2 later picks (maybe the Swans 19 and 21) and turn Pick 2 into 3 in the 1st round. They are probably in that stage of their rebuild where they have taken their top tier next players and want to build the support crew and can then pick the eyes out of their positional needs with those 3 picks.

If it were me as North list manager, thats what I'd be doing.

Imagine if they were that enamoured with Tauru, that with 2 they still get him at 6, and then get 2 picks in that range of 19 and 21. Would be a great trade. Yes they've lost their 1st next year, but I reckon they will back themselves in to improve, IMO others around them might improve more, but I would expect them to improve on where they are. That future could end up pick 6 or 7 which they will feel they did ok with their 2 extra picks this year to ignore that pick.
