Welcome Tyler Sonsie

Tyler Sonsie

Height: 181cm
Weight: 77kg
D.O.B: 27-01-2003

POSITION: Balanced Midfielder

SNAPSHOT: “A clean and damaging player possessing the best two-sided kick in the draft pool, Sonsie is a stoppage specialist with slick hands and smarts who can also go forward and kick goals.”

Tyler Sonsie is a balanced midfielder able to win clearances in close, but also hurt the opposition on the outside with his clean and crisp skills. Proving he could match it against senior players with a 24 disposal and two goal game in his only VFL outing for Box Hill, he may be one of a few Victorian prospects to debut at AFL level next year. Likened by recruiters to Richmond champion Trent Cotchin, such a comparison is evident in his stoppage work; able to win first possession with quick anticipation and clean hands to set up midfield thrusts, but also every chance to go forward and kick goals on his right and left boot.

STRENGTHS:

Scoreboard impact
Clean hands
Kicking
Clearances
Composure
Agility

IMPROVEMENTS:

Consistency
Gut running

Interesting reading back to his draft profile. His deficiencies were spotted then and clearly haven't improved.

Gut running is an absolute must for an AFL level midfielder

Watched him carefully today does not want body contact. Won't run hard to the next contest. I have said this and I'll repeat it he won't make it.

As much as I thought he was a decent draft choice and thought he'd show everyone he was a bargain, I don't think it's going to happen.

Too slow and unathletic, not very physical, and most disappointing is that his foot skills just aren't anywhere near as good as they looked at junior level. Maybe because he had more time back then. Dunno.

He really struggles with the pace and physicality of AFL football.

Spot on.

You've seen the light.

Poor player. Poor pick.

Can't compete = can't play.

Play him in the middle, VFL or AFL, let's see if he has anything. Then, if he performs the way he has been playing, you would have to say time's up. He has a year on his contract so we need to see if there is any potential, we should do it this year as we're bottom of the ladder so nothing to lose. Need a thorough assessment of all the young players so we can make well informed decisions.

Put the decision in his hands - he performs he stays, he doesn't perform, goodbye.

I know progression of improvement isn’t always linear but Tyler is looking like a bust. Coming to the end of his 3rd season, played 23 games. You just want to have seen more development by now. Stating the obvious but ‘25 is make or break for him and it’s really looking like break.

'likened by recruiters to trent cotchin, both surnames 2nd last letter is i'

the only explanation is our recruiting dept has been infiltrated by geelong.

Very disappointing.
When he snotted someone in the vfl last Year and got 4 weeks (IIRC) I thought maybe he has some grunt and aggressive traits.
Maybe needed to hone his aggressiveness and play smart.
Maybe we have a player here I thought.

How wrong.
Has no appetite for the contest.
Looking for bruise free footy.

Bust.
Trade.

There's no hard luck story here. Been given plenty of chances this season to step up to the level. Has been a massive disappointment. Has to be delisted (possibly re-rookied if they still see something in him that isn't obvious to me).

It seems odd that he’s not struggling as such, nor looking lost on the field; he’s simply not trying. Could he have other issues in his life that are currently more important? Is his confidence so low that he’s given up? (If so, why wouldn’t the club see it, rest him and talk to him?)

Seems strange that a “born to play footy” type kid, whose best mate is excelling at it, is seemingly willing to throw it all away without a whimper. Not sure if he has the education for an attractive alternative career.

He was on one of those draft shows. Maybe on Stan? He was pretty disappointed and almost sooking that he wasn’t getting drafted earlier. Maybe a long bow but rather than taking feedback as a drive to prove everyone wrong he just took it as everyone else being wrong.

I just watched the NFL receiver show. The Detroit lions dude knows every receiver drafted before him and used it as motivation to beat them all. Found this article on it. https://www.si.com/extra-mustard/20...-lists-every-wide-receiver-drafted-before-him Feels we didn’t get the psych test right with sonsie.
