Welcome to the Tiggers - Daniel Butler

This is exactly the same as the Townsend thread. Our issue is that we don't have ready made replacements, and unless we get hit in the arse by a rainbow soon, we were never going to have in 2018.

Bolton, Stengle and even Higlet and his snags aren't AFL ready yet. Markov is only just back from injury, opinion on Chol appears extremely varied which doesn't bode well when exposed to the bunsen burner which is a good team in the 1s.

This leaves Lloyd, B.Ellis and Menadue fighting for spots. Menadue is the one I'd like to see but I don't know if he would even be considered for a forward spot and he hasn't managed to win a spot to date.

One more month for Rioli and who knows how long till he gets back to his GWS finals form. Strap in everyone, could be a bit of a ride.

You forgot Cal Moore, who can play HBF or wing as well as forward. He has a lot to offer; whether he's ready to handle the extreme pressure at the top, dunno. Only one way to find out. Many of the top teams are playing at least two tall forwards; ours is Caddy at 187cm (and JR).

I did look Moore up last night Leon re a replacement for Townsend. Not seeing his name much in posts. My impression, and I know others are far more up with his form, is that he seems to be travelling about as well as Chol i.e. 1-2 goals a game at VFL level. I reckon they will eat him in the 1s. Same issue - we promote and hope for a form explosion or we persist and hope those who are afl ready and in the side improve their form. In my opinion this is what injuries and niggles are for. Empowers the coach to roll the dice.

I suppose what I am trying to say is that with a few additions, notably Short and Conca, if the 2017 premiership side can't take what the best (e.g. West Coast) has to offer in 2018 then the answer isn't waiting romantically in the twos like it was last year.

Have to disagree with this. What we really needed this year to keep everyone on their toes was an injection of some new blood. Our VFL side are top of the table and there is class AFL standard players just waiting for the opportunity in that side.

Agree, good VFL form has to be rewarded.

Has been poor this season, getting caught with the ball too often. The goals he has got have mostly come in the last quarter when we've been running rampant. Time for a reset in the VFL.
For whatever reason he hasn't been up to his 2017 form which was excellent. In fact he was a class act over the season and through the finals and was a delight to watch.
The reason(s) for the decline this year doesn't matter right now - whether it's a niggle or a lack of confidence or even bad luck and not getting the bounce of the ball - or all of those.
At this stage the hard call needs to be made and Butler needs the opportunity to get his act together again via the VFL and one of our better performing VFL players deserves their chance.

Townsend and Butler aren't exactly ripping it up.

On Moore, he's been a bit wasteful lately but he does have some elite AFL traits that Townsend doesn't have: speed to burn and a huge leap.

These kids can never make the transition to AFL if they're never exposed to it. They need to be given a taste here and there, going back to VFL to consolidate.

The Saints and Druggies are the perfect time to give oe or two kids a taste. Menadue is a must. Moore or Chol a luxury.

Gave you the tip on Cal Moore, Brett. He is a player who will compete hard on the ground and in the air, but will chase and tackle hard too. A lot will depend on how they use him and give him opportunities. He can play elsewhere to deep forward, even wing. Pace to burn and his kicking isn't as terrible as some make out. It's variable, like a lot of AFL players (think Buddy early days).

But it's tough to come in and impress immediately; hope he goes well enough to get a run of games under his belt.

he's a very lucky boy. I hope Dimma has put a rocket up him this week.
Possibly it was the fact that Georgie needed to be rested that has given Butler this extra chance to show a return to 2017 form - let's hope so.

Yes think that gave him a reprieve for another game, but he better find it before both George and Rioli are 100% ready to go. If he has a niggle himself too, it's not easy. Lacking his zip.

I like Butler. Seriously talented. I'm backing him to come back into form shortly.

I wish I could agree.
But there is something about him that worries me.
He is fast but I don’t think he is a particularly smart footballer.
And i reckon he is falling into the old “playing your role” syndrome.
Your “role” should be to compete as hard as you possibly can, and when it’s your turn, go.
Again today I saw him look repeatedly at his opponent in the contest rather than just go flat chat at the ball.
Don’t like it, and think the coaches need to get it out of his game asap.
And twice when he could have marked the ball, he let it bounce. Again. Not good.

Much better today.

Got on the end of a couple of goals but still struggling with his decision-making. 33% disposal efficiency today with 6 turnovers from 17 disposals. Definitely better output than last week but he's struggling a bit. Deserves to stay in though at this stage.

Fortunate today, got on a few.

Bad hat it's creeping in that need ironing out quick smart.

The same one(s) from the GF. Watching the player in front of him and not going for or picking up the ball! Just looking at the ball!

Don't understand that.

Disagree. Kicked 3 from the goal square. Josh Jenkins like. Missed 2 set shot sodas.

He's way out of form and lucky to be in the side.

His first 15 minutes were awful. Got better and got a few goals. One from a terrific kick from Houli and the other from an Edwards special. Still makes some very ordinary decisions.

Was better than he has been and was a lot more involved.

This. And is incredibly selfish. And petrified. But talented.
