Welcome to the Tigers Jacob Hopper

Reckon GWS have looked around at some of the deals and values being touted and feel like they got unders for Taranto and are trying to make it up on the back end with the Hopper deal.

Sorry if I’m on the wrong thread , however with all this analysis of the big doofus rucks , I see the game evolving where the “2nd” ruck types will become more the norm , imho Rucks are something you must have , however you don’t necessarily need to have a superstar one, obviously its great to have a top line Ruck .

Its a bit contradicting but I think Natanui is the perfect example , rated as the best ruck by many over the last decade ( imho very overrated) however he has been part of a team with plenty of AAs in every part of the field , however when they win a flag , he has no part in it .

Again I think ruck craft is great , however the amount of times a perfect tap to a moving player is achieved is minimal, proven for years and years great clearance players ( rovers, ruck rovers, midfields , stoppage stars ) win the ball of either ruck and hit, I’d imagine a great amount of times in a ruck contest neither ruckman actually wins the hitout , in fact I think there was a time we set up to lose ruck hit outs and did it extremely well.

Obviuosly Nank will be our starting ruck, but it’s not because he’s a great tap ruckman , it’s because he’s a competing beast that is good around the ground , he’s good enough at what he does to be a triple premiership player. Anyway imho , we always start with Nank , however I have no issue having Miller, Balta and Biggy types been our “ second” rucks and in time , I can see us and other teams going with 2 2’s , basically if you can’t play around the ground you become a liability, I’ve been a fan of Soldo , however he’s winning taps so often go straight to the opposition, is our mids ? Or is it poor execution from Soldo ?

Recent great Rucks are considered great because of them basically been a 4th midfielder, not just because they are tall.
I think this is right. I have seen Nic Nat carve teams up with his ruck work, especially in the centre square, but the number of times it happens makes the price too high

I do think however that if we are evolving to these 2nd ruck types that they need to not only compete at ground level but also be able to take a grab. The ability for your ruck to take the odd grab in transition and also sit in the defensive hole is incredibly important.

Would have preferred Lollingwoods F2 and that’s seems fair but it is what it is. Blair overpaid again
No he hasn't
Pick 12 *Ellis or Dow part 2 & Coleman Jones for Tarranto
And Pick 31 *Batchelor & Soldo for Hopper
.We have killed it.
I love they way they have gone about it.
Let them Stop using 1st rounders on duds like Higgins, Ellis x2, Dow, Collier Dawkins & even Coleman Jones and use the picks on kids that aren't pensioners but in there prime and ready to fill huge holes on our side.
They got 5 new kids last year 6 if you include Bayer Munich
We are the kings of the preseason ^ Rookie drafts and will select kids hungry to play AFL.
I couldn't go another year with a dud 1st rounder.

I know he and his column aren’t popular here, but Parrot touched briefly on the Hopper deal in Sliding Doors yesterday. His opinion is that it will get done, because good clubs get these deals done.
He is a massive Geelong lover.
Not sure because they were 1st rounders that they play like 2st rounders..Bruhn has the fiora look, Bowes couldn't get a game at GC and they had 300 injuries and Henry is the best of the lot but he couldn't get a game at Collingwood because he wouldn't defend

You boys do realise that this will happen in the last hour of Trade Week, right?

Keeping Richmond and Collingwood fans on tenterhooks = lots of Rheems get installed + sell more tyres+ ratings go up
Aren't they Continental Tyres *,The smart Choice Tyres'

I agree. Pick 12 & 19 are all speculative picks. Clubs are giving away picks this year. Suggest to me the draft ain’t that deep.

Yep, and this is where Nank is superior to Soldo and he has a far better around the ground presence, at least historically. Doesn't mean I want to lose Soldo though as I'm concerned about Nank's longevity.

Not asking you in particular Sin, but is Samson Ryan ready (or capable) of a role like this? If not we'd be best to hold onto Soldo and trade someone like Hugo. But I'll take faith I'm our footy department to make the right decision because an inside midfielder like Hopper is certainly required.

Ruckwork has both attack and defensive elements. In a simple sense it's
a)get the ball to teammates/where you want it
b) don't let the other ruck dominate

Examples of B are 2013 elimination final and Hawkins in the cats forward line.
WCE didn't win with NicNat but did with Lycett a competitive negating ruck who made sure he wasn't beaten

We all tend to focus on A cos it's easier to see, and the stats show HO and HOTA.
But losing B can be devastating

It's the risk of 2 2s when the opposition have a true ruck to rule the roost

(Agree about importance of 4th midfielder and marks in transition)

Yep. Too obvious. We have to be the melodrama of this stupid league.

Salary dump is a player whom won't get taken without huge incentive.

Hopper ,Taranto, were wanted by numerous clubs including cats, pies,us , making it a normal trade.

Combine that with outside runners in Graham Short Pickett Baker McIntosh

Midfield looks fantastic now

Hard Nuts - Hopper, Cotchin and Prestia.
