Welcome to the Tigers Jacob Hopper

Because some of the other players salaries are in the vicinity of $1million plus. Who would take that salary on?

So they go down the chain.

Have a few other options for midfield and will go to the draft!

Taranto & Hopper on lesser salaries so it makes business sense to move these two on even though the club has voiced it in the media they would love to keep them.

They have stuffed up their TPP and need relief so hence these two players.

Agree with most of that. They have stuffed their TPP to an extent but thats not why they are moving them on. Thats what they might do with Haynes (thats a dump, a player on the decline on massive wages), With Hopper and Taranto, this is about list balance.

They will likely give up a fair amount for Pick 1 (I called this before the trade period started as I thought both Pick 1 and 2 would change hands this year) as I think they have acknowledged where their list balance is all over the place, and they want Cadman at 1.

They have way too many similar types in the midfield, with their similar ages meaning they are taking up way too much of the TPP collectively. As you mention due to the lower salaries of TT and JH, they get the better draft collateral which means they can trade up and get the targets they want in this draft to provide a bit better balance to their list.

What nonsense.
Just because some GWS noodle tells you it is just a sad coincidence doesn’t mean you have to believe it.
Do you think Richmond would be clearing a Bolton with one year to go on his contract or a Gibcus just getting started.
No one would dream of it.
GWS are selling because they have mismanaged their list to the extent that they now have to take the course they are taking, not with the blokes we let go, but with the very best they have.

You realise either Blair Hartley is a moron or you are wrong.

In a sense both Moment and Posh are both right.

The Greater Western Swampies would keep both JH and TT if they could afford it. But they can't offer them market value for their next contracts.
And choose to prioritise other players with longer contracts.
Those gone Hill Bruhn are relatively smallfry expendable.

But now JH is contracted for 1 year. Can the swampies pay him without busting their cap?
Possibly with the other players out the door.
But they won't give him an acceptable offer so either trade now or free agency next year.

It is about $$$. But the swampies have an option to let JH go next year.
But of course we want him now

No I agree with you, Poshman and others. Getting Hopper with Taranto and with our current group is an all assault at Flag 14.

I understand that. I truly do.

But I couldn’t stomach another period like I endured from 1983-2016. I’ve included our seasons of finals but ultimately it’s flags a club gets measured by not just making finals or being uncompetitive for long periods.

You want sustained success. Obviously. You want to give your players every possible chance every year. Obviously.

I don’t want to end up like Hawthorn. A recent case study!

With those two added gives us a huge opportunity.

Let’s hope we clean up those issues we had this year. It’s was brain fade stuff from mostly experienced players and also poor goal kicking.
Hey Waitey
Agree we gotta think of the kids too....
One thing I think is critical is getting the core in a 2-3 year block.
If you could draft perfectly then the side would have ten first round picks and ten 2nd round picks. But that would be spread over 10 years!
Instead it's better to have the prime movers - Jack Shedda Cotch Rancey Dusty Dave Bach - all around the same age.

So with JH and TT we are grouping them with DRio Shorty Balta Shai

And the future is the twenty-two 5 plus Cumbo, MRJ, Samson. Bauer too.
Some unproven of course but it's a great base for a tilt in 5 years time.
When we trade in a few more guns!

Personally i believe people just dont realise how good these 2 boys are going to become for the Richmond Football Club

These 2 noys along with 4-5 others have been the players keeping GWS afloat and have been their best players in their best year 2019 winning and coming 3rd in the B & F when playing in a very good team.

They have come from a club thats had no soul not atmosphere and are starving for the adrenalin of a real club with 100k members and crowd screaming like crazy. I remember tom lynch saying when he kicks a goal and the crowd screams he still gets a massive kick from it and drives him to do more.

They are exactly the types and players we need and combined with Bolton , Martin , Prestia , Sonsie , Graham , Cotchin , Ross
going to be winning alot of ball and the different variety of mix in the middle is fantastic

We are in it to win it the next 2 years while Grimes , Dusty , Lynch and the rest are still playing
Lets not forget players want o come and stay in a winning environment and keeping players like Bolton , baker , Balta will be made alot easier

There is no salary dump. GWS weren't forcing him out. We chased him and he wants to come to us. Different to the Bowes, Grundy, Treloar situations.
Correct Taranto was the salary dump.

Hopper they wanted to keep.

You realise either Blair Hartley is a moron or you are wrong.
More nonsense from you. I have said nothing of the kind and nor do I think it.
I have said what course I believe we should follow. See # 1520.
You and your mates dribble has taken you all over the shop but you have rather hopelessly failed to address that issue.
Instead your view has been that we should give them what they want come what ever, as long as we get Hopper.
We disagree. I am happy to leave it at that.

I reckon the art of the trade is reading the room. Is it a salary dump? Is it a list restructure? Fire sale by any other name?

Not that it really matters to us, I reckon we do business a bit differently. We’re not out just to screw the other party - we operate in good faith. We’ll pay the price that we think is reasonable. I think we see T+H’s value each as top 4 picks in any average draft. So we pay a medium first round and an early second round price to get them.

Worth it? To get two top 4 picks through the door. Absolutely!

Good luck opposition clubs winning the ball from the centre square .
Teams will need to score from Def 50.

I don’t think we have gws over a barrel completely but almost.

- hopper wants to leave, so they have a somewhat disgruntled player

- they have plenty Of midfielders on their list

-salary cap. I suspect they are tight and have bigger issues in the coming years. If they free up some space they could advance pay some wages which benefits the player. If they can advance a player 300k to next year, they maybe able take off 350 from a later year. Player is happier(richer) getting up front money.

- Taranto and hopper are both in gws best 22 no doubt but are they needed. Their list balance is out of whack.

- gws have some kind of duty to send the players to their desired club.

- we have already given them slightly overs on the Taranto deal.

- gws already have the draft capital this year in picks so their needs for further picks is somewhat reduced when they look at their hand.

- we can offer soldo. Having a good / ordinary player like him on the list is essential for making your salary cap work. Starting 22 every week, never gets badly beaten by opposition ruck and is probably the 25 th highest paid player on your list.

You boys do realise that this will happen in the last hour of Trade Week, right?

Keeping Richmond and Collingwood fans on tenterhooks = lots of Rheems get installed + sell more tyres+ ratings go up

He will be a free agent and they will lose him. We will offer him 6 years at $700-$750 and they will get a 1st rounder which will probably be a pick around 5-8. That’s what they will be expecting. There is zero chance he goes to the psd.
The giants know they will lose Hopper next year anyway
Since when has any club had free agent compo around 5-8?

Are we talking about Neale and Cripps?
