Welcome to the Tigers - Daniel Rioli

Get off the kids back . Ok he has a lot to live up up to & the last thing he wants is Tiger supporters bucketing him. I concur his stats are not up to scratch but is it his fault. Playing in a below standard AFL team . I think Dimma is crucifying the kid by playing him. Should be in the Magoos where 99% of draftees start & play their initial year. He is no dill when it comes to play AFl football but Tigers better manage him right or they will regret later on if they do not.

Well now I feel I have to clarify my comments again in case you think I am attacking Dan. It's actually Tiger80 who goes in hard on him, then declares "but some
will delight in tearing him down."

I really rate him and think he has a bright future. My major point is that I want to see Dimma get some games into the other young guys too, to really bring them on. Dan could use a rest and a spell in the vfl because he's struggling to make much impact recently. No big knock; he's just very young and light. Needs time.

Umm don't think so.

Mostly agree except re depth. It may be better than we think, because our VFL side is very average, but you might play better in a far better side - at AFL. Some other young talent should get some games too to develop: Castagna (was no worse that DR in his earlier games; Cal Moore has a promising future; Drummond later in season if progresses well, Short definitely).

Depth is developed by experience, across the range of your youngsters.
I'd add Oleg Markov to that list of youngsters I'd like to see get some game time.

Not about tearing him down. Just thinking we have seen enough for now and a spell in the twos now will be better for him than a string of 6 possie no goal games.

Yeah I agree
But the club has the real stats, GPS stuff etc, so we'll see

I think he'll turn out very good with a few years of development in him. Showing more than Tambling did at the same stage and may well turn out to be the player Tambling was tipped to be. That is, speedy HF/F type whom spends short bursts in the midfield (this is what Hawthorn hoped for Cyril, but dodgy hammies have restricted him to a specialist fwd).
Dodgy hammies or not Cyril is magic - Daniel turns out half as good (think he will better that) we have a top player

Dead right. Apologies, just forgot about him!

Dimma has copped some flak for saying he has never had better depth but I know what he means. We have recruited for a different game-style, with the fast, athletic footballers for the modern game. The problem is that this type of player is lightly built, for speed and hopefully high quality skills: Menadue, Markov, Rioli, Castagna, CMoore, CEllis, Drummond, Choll, Short and maybe Butler.

They need time to build their bodies and adapt to the intensely fast and physical modern game. The whole team has to develop a new game-style as these guys come on tap.

So I just think we can start getting some games into all of them to hasten this process. Hope Dimma has got it right. But I think we have no other choice; this is our best chance at a successful future.

I have no problems with this at all. Sound management.

Sounds great to me. Needs to get more hands on the ball and build his confidence up. Been struggling to get into the play much.

Playing in the magoos, Dimma said he will play in the middle

Great; a whippet thrown in amongst pit-bulls. Hasn't got the body for it yet; not for some years. Just a SF with a bit of mid time.

I reckon it's a really good move.

At the moment Rioli is very tentative and lurks on the fringes a lot ( which you would expect from a guy in his first year). This is a good way to teach him to get the hard ball amongst men.

Maybe they should've tried that with Tambling, eh.

Just denying reality. He's an 18 year old kid, straight out of schoolboy football. Just happens to have a famous footy name.

Under 180cm, weighs around or under 70kgs. Compare with a true, tough, modern inside mid such as Ballard. Dan is out-weighed by almost 20 kgs and 7/8 cm less in height.
So you see what happens at AFL level, when he is tackled, cannot even free his hands to get a HB away; pinged for HTB. Often. Don't tell me he's fast; I know, but most clubs have heaps of guys who have run under 3sec for the 20m sprint at draft camp e.g. Bullies had 14 a couple of years back. So Dan will be caught at times, and has been.

People need to stop basing expectations on him due to what his name happens to be. Look at him as a very young, lightly-built but talented player. He must be given another 2 years to grow and develop. In the meantime, mostly SF with an occasional burst in the middle. Needs protecting as well as experience, and a good gym program.

Yep. Take the name out and he should have gone late second round early third. First round picks are for those kids ready to go, not wafer thin ordinary height kids who may or may not grow. Another stuffed up early pick.

I believe you will be proved wrong on this over time. The kid has something.

It is also accepted that had he not gone to us the hawks were ready with their pick 19 or whatever it was they had around that mark. The difference is that if he had gone there he would have 10-11 games with Box Hill so far and would have been given time to develop. Rightly or wrongly we haven't done that.

I dunno. Daniel Smith looks pretty *smile* good. Don't go the early pot. Might come back to haunt ya.

Everything you said is purely speculative and belongs with later picks NOT early picks
