Welcome Sam Banks

Well what would you expect his coach to say?
Coach has been surprisingly honest in his reports of players this year and has no qualms about pointing out a player's weaknesses on the day. I can't personally comment on his kicking, didn't see the game.

I know it’s the highlights package but his highlights from the match on website showed some beautiful ball usage.
The last thing I would be worrying about with Banksy is his kicking.
Anyway it is worth a look

His draft profile...A smooth-moving half-back who can roll through the midfield. Banks is a great decision maker with pinpoint kicking." So he just needs time to develop more strength in the gym and more confidence in his decision-making at the faster pace of AFL/VFL. He started as a light-weight athlete at 73kg, so once he puts on 10 kg he'll be a different player. Taken in the same draft as Tom Brown but Tom was 6cm taller and a bit heavier when recruited. Tom has really improved this year but he still turns it over with wonderful passes straight to the opposition (last two weeks)...just like Rance did for many years! Only Sam's 2nd season of AFL experience so it's too early for some to write him off especially when he is so brave in getting the footy after his awful concussion.
Interesting regarding your turnover comment last 2 weeks, Brown. He had 2 turnovers last game, I distinctly remember 1 he cleverly gathered the ball and pinned on the boundary line and had to rush a kick out of there, so yes a turnover. Previous game he had zero turnovers. He's definitely nowhere near Rance's disposal level in his early days. Did have a couple of bad turnover games in our big loss streak but maybe excusable the rabble we were as a team.

Yep. One thing that is constantly ignored is that even the best disposers only go at 75 or 80%.

It’s easy (and lazy) to slag off someone who gets 30 possessions and 6 or 7 don’t go to plan if you’re that way inclined.

I think the other 1 that was a turnover, was a kick coming out of defence that fell perhaps a metre or 2 short. Had he got that extra distance we were out, it fell just short and they came in and intercepted, though I don't think it was marked. Certainly not a terrible turnover, was almost a terrific aggressive kick that got us out.

Correct. Morro is always pretty honest with criticism of players even if it's delivered softly in this public forum. He'll say "he had a tough day, but is learning. We'd like to see him do more of x and y, and to improve in z".

I really like this kind of public comstructive criticism. No doubt in private the feedback would be more direct.

I watched the game Sin. I have never seen Banks use his foot skills to that level before. Elite. Would love to know what his meters gained kicking efficiency was and meters gained.

That one looked like Brown didn't quite hit it flush so it was short.
I'm on the fence as it was a challenging kick and not necessarily the smartest play.
He's a beaut kick but can play the percentages.

On Banks what I saw (on the tv admittedly not live) was overkicking due to his momentum. His game didn't stand out because of elite kicking. But he's not a horrible kick. Thats ok for now. Lets see the kid build and strengthen his game.

I always think there is a difference being a poor kick and not kicking well in a match generally.

As an example all the 5 players we picked in the 2021 draft are good kicks, even very good. That doesn't mean they always display that in a match because there are many reasons why players fluff kicks. There is decision making for one (they try and do too much) but in young players I believe that many struggle early in their careers because they aren't used to the pressure and rush kicks when they don't need to. Then there is the little man in your head, Sonsie against Essendon as an example. He is a very good kick for goal but for some reason he kicked poorly for goal that day.

These are the things coaches help with, sometimes it just needs experience.

Other than his goal, which was a beauty, I thought his kicking was very 2024 Jayden Short-esque.

Didn't go when it was his turn in the center square one time (again very Short-esque).

For mine VFL is his level as he doesn't have the pace or strength required at AFL level.

I don't think he'll make it, but he is on the list for another year and a half so he has every chance to prove himself.
I hope u are wrong. I thought his pace was ok. But agree he doesn’t seem to have the strength.

I think he makes it as a wingman but not easy when there are only two of them. Was captain of his team every junior team he played so has a good head on him and leadership qualities I guess.

Terrific sourcing, toothless. Thank you for the info. So. Banks is pefectly adequate speed-wise on that data but just doesn't run quickly. He's not at home on the park that's for sure. Why doesn't he run?

Why didn't Mabior? Minson? Sonsie? Cumberland? Ralphsmith?

I can understand people writing Spunk off in the lead up to his break out VFL game of last week. He's looked lost.

But lost or not in the VFL Sam Banks finally got busy. That's a breakthrough. It was engineered. No doubt about that. And the competition was very soft. But he got busy. Now he has to get busier. I hope he gets a few more weeks of busy VFL.

Sam Banks's biggest challenge is confidence. He doesn't believe. Yet.

I don't think his pace his run or his kicking has ever been an issue. Its other areas that there are issues imo.
In Sam, Brown and Smith we have players who will take on tough kicks.

HB is their best position. We can throw Trezise into the mix here as well. They all can obviously fit into running roles. Finding a way to play them at senior level across hb or even wing is the challenge imo. One way to partially achieve this is to play Rioli on a wing and get rid of Short.
I think Rioli, being a senior experienced player making this role change would be easy for him. He would make a great wingman allowing a kid to play in their natural role.

I don't know if any will make it. If they ultimately prove themselves I sort of envision a like for like scenario of.
Trezise as a Vlastuin replacement. Brown as our Broad replacement. I always felt Bauer would be a good replacement for Grimes, Smith definately for Short. It doesnt leave a spot for Banks but he could play wing and replace McIntosh.

Early next year Grimes will be 33, Broad 32, Vlastuin 31, McIntosh 31, Short will be 29 and the other winger in Pickett will be 33.

Not going to say much about them except to say Broad and Vlastuin are still playing good footy and their experience and leadership will be badly needed.
Grimes is here in name only i think, and the other three Short, McIntosh and Pickett we need to move on imo allowing those kids mentioned a spot.

I think we just need to give him the wing for the rest of the year. Continuity to build belief without fear of failure.
