Welcome Sam Banks

Wasn’t an issue in this game. Wasn’t his role. Was the distributor - Think J.Short in the premiership years.
Other than his goal, which was a beauty, I thought his kicking was very 2024 Jayden Short-esque.

Didn't go when it was his turn in the center square one time (again very Short-esque).

For mine VFL is his level as he doesn't have the pace or strength required at AFL level.

I don't think he'll make it, but he is on the list for another year and a half so he has every chance to prove himself.

Unfortunately I agree at this stage. He may be a 'nice' kick but he is no Tom Brown with his use of it (new Bar!) , can turn it over and doesn't open the game up with it as you think he might - yet anyway. Still may happen because he is a good kick.
Also apparently he kicked in and played on a lot yesterday hence the rise in kicks v handballs, they kicked 15 points

That’s not what his coach said about his kicking.

Well what would you expect his coach to say?

I thought that there was a lot of long down the field kicks to no one in particular.

I saw very few (if any) 45 degree kicks to open up the game. I saw very little creativity in his kicking. This is an area he need to improve on.

What did you think of his kicking?

I wouldn’t expect his coach to say that his kicking was really good when it wasn’t. Steve Morris has a history of being honest and it certainly wouldn’t have been unusual for him to say something like “ he was great at getting the ball but we would have liked his kicking to be better”, if that is what he thought. If you read his vfl reports he often says things like that.
I think he is a very good field kick and being creative with your kicking is not about ability it is about decision making. Hopefully if they wanted a bit more dare he would have got that feedback.
I see a good player in Banks but he needs to increase his output consistently for sure. He has the tools but not everyone who has the tools makes it.
The club rates him imo

It's great he played well but do we need another half back? He'll need to make it as a winger if he wants a spot in the seniors IMO.

How many of those kicks were kick outs?

The opposition did kick 15 behinds.
K. He got 15 disposals in the 3rd Q and Port kicked 2 behinds. Blight took a number of kick ins as well.

He ran lines very well. The RFC coach sitting directly behind me was noting it.

Why isn't Smiffy doing the majority of the kick ins?

Hopefully someone was there and can confirm, but I thought during play, Smith may have been playing a touch further up the ground watching on TV, but I could be wrong. Hard to tell on TV.

He was higher up the ground a fair bit. But that could also be coz Port collapsed back and we looked to be manning up a fair bit. I was in the forward 50 at times. But ii couldn't tell if that was a positional move or just 'coz he was following his man up.

Needs time, strength and confidence.

His draft profile...A smooth-moving half-back who can roll through the midfield. Banks is a great decision maker with pinpoint kicking." So he just needs time to develop more strength in the gym and more confidence in his decision-making at the faster pace of AFL/VFL. He started as a light-weight athlete at 73kg, so once he puts on 10 kg he'll be a different player. Taken in the same draft as Tom Brown but Tom was 6cm taller and a bit heavier when recruited. Tom has really improved this year but he still turns it over with wonderful passes straight to the opposition (last two weeks)...just like Rance did for many years! Only Sam's 2nd season of AFL experience so it's too early for some to write him off especially when he is so brave in getting the footy after his awful concussion.

Excellent post. You could say the same for pretty much all of the cubs.

They’re all going to get stronger and heavier with bigger tanks over the next couple of years. But they’ll have had more time in the seniors due to our injury annus horribillus.

The silver lining is real and the future is bright.

You were in the F50?
That's either an opportunistic move because Port's ground was so dark or we got a player on our hands!!!

Either way hope you celebrated the win!

From reports he played a top class game and was so influential around the park which is good news. The trouble is he doesn't seem able to translate that form to AFL level which is where we need it. We need a more aggressive half back to give bite and skill out of defence right now but is he the answer? Stats are one thing but actual performance is another. A bit like Shorty's game on Thursday, the stats showed he had a great game but missed his inaccurate kicking and bruise free footy at times so wasn't as influential on the park as he should have been

Geez. Can we let him grow n develop a bit first. He's another with barely a handful of AFL games. Let him perform well at VFL level and then throw him a few more games at AFL level, maybe he'll find out how to step up n maybe he won't. There's a raft of half backs ahead of him at the moment so it should be all about learning his craft first n then worrying about whether there's a role for him.

His concussion a few weeks back was really bad, completely lights out.
Get back to top VFL and reload in the AFL.
