Seriously need to look at our player development program
How did we get it so wrong
Time to part ways with Cumberland
But if we don’t learn from his time we are seriously negligent

It’s a bloody fair question but might not be a simple answer. Personal responsibility also plays a part. Can’t solely blame the footy club.

Correct. I reckon Cumbo will go down a similar route to Stack, probably won't fall as far as Stack did, will eek out a good career at VFL level but I don't see him on another AFL list anytime soon.

Will get a lifeline for minimum chips from Fly I suspect. Someone will give him a rookie spot to see if they can get him back to some of his good form

This Cumbo saga reminds me very much around the time Jay *smile* was playing for us.The amount of vitriol from many posters here wanted him drawn and quartered.IMO he was one that the footy club destroyed.Suggest for those interested to watch his highlights on the new tube video to recap what we let go.

I remember watching him in the 2's against Casey and he barely touched it, confidence was shot but also the footy was scrambly and as a forward was virtually impossible. Before anybody clips me I am not suggesting Cumbo has Schulz traits.

Suggest someone Google Year 2022 round 20
Kid can play
Kicked 5 goals at the Gabba
Remember
Poor development of a player with ability
He needs to go and play under Fly and Leppa
Leave it right there !!!😉

And whilst you are at it Google Dean Polo.

Many thought he could play after his first game

So what’s happened ?

I’m starting to think it might have a bit to do with our deteriorating forward structure over the last couple of seasons.

Cumbo’s not really a lead/mark forward. He’s not KPP sized. He’s not a specialist aerialist. He’s always been an opportunist - feeding off forward line chaos to find a way through the big sticks.

In 2022 the forward line was creating more opportunities for crumbing forwards than it did in 2023 and this year. Then Jack lost a yard and eventually retired, Lynch spent a couple of seasons in the rehab group, other tall options didn’t come on, and the midfield got a whole bunch less effective at getting the ball inside 50.

All of a sudden, defenders no longer have bigger fish to fry, and start to pay more attention to Cumbo. Which isn’t good when you’re undersized and the mids are kicking it on top of your head.

On top of all of that is the ever present pressure to perform. Trying too hard has undone better players than Cumbo.

He desperately needs to add more strings to his bow to keep his spot on the list. We’re just not good enough to carry him as a pure opportunist forward right now, and likely won’t be for a long while.

His first instinct used to be attack the ball, make the offensive play and kick a goal if the opportunity was there. Now it's cover space, shut the outlets and apply pressure. It's clear to see however that he's hopeless at this. This would be OK if he was George, but he's not that player. His natural game has been deliberately altered by the coaches who thought he'd be a more rounded player as a result. He's a purely instinctive attacking footballer who doesn't have the footy IQ to do both.

Just shows how incompetent the current coaching group is
Kid needs help
Guidance and coaching
You won’t get that at Punt Rd that’s for sure
Dimma
Mini
Yze

3 coaches and all think he's not delivering what's needed to be an AFL player.

I think I know who needs the help.

I always thought Jay had the talent to carve out a career & he did. That was very pleasing.
I'm not so convinced by Noah. His footskills in particular are really patchy & he's not exceptional overhead. That's a problem for a mid sized forward (Sarge was a beautiful kick).
Specialist mid sized forward is about the hardest position to play in the AFL. Either you're a mid who can go forward & kick goals or you're an elite goal kicker up front.
Was a very bright start in 2022 & maybe Dimma tried to turn him into something he's not but equally Noah hasn't consistently shown he's got what it takes.
His time here is going to end pretty soon. Can he do it elsewhere? Maybe but I'm not convinced.

IMO he was trying so hard the other night that he was ending up half way between plays of over committing on the plays he managed to get involved in. He basically looked as sh!te as i've seen a player look.

But look at how he's been used this year when he came into the seniors. Redman took him to the cleaners and the same thing happened against the Cats, where he's on a much bigger opponent trying to play either a negative forward role, or a role as a tall forward (hard to tell because of the bath he was getting). Point is that due to injury, he's been used in roles that don't suit him, and that's happened when his confidence was already low. Right now it looks like he don't feel like he belongs.

In his first year, he showed plenty. 9 games is a far bigger sample than the Dean polo comparrison someone else raised. He has the ability to step through traffic, and turn on a dime which gives him space turning nothings into goal opportunities. He has something special but right now he's so shattered between the ears that when he does get a kick, he couldn't hit the side of the QE2 with it.

I dont think Dimma's treatment of him was great in 2023, and it probably cost us a number of those games that we lost by less than a goal. Probalby hasn't done anything for the career of either of them, coach or player.
