Welcome Jacob Blight

I haven't seen him play but many reckon he is pretty good as a KPD. However, is he ready for the big leagues as he has just left little more than bush footy in the last few weeks and he needs to get more experience of the game plan (whatever it is), structures and his team mates before being thrown to the wolves. Right now our defence is starting to gel quite nicely with Miller, Balta, Brown, Vlastuin and Broad so why risk him now. Rather let him settle in and develop at VFL unless we have a serious problem with our defenders then we drop him in at the deep end.

Bit harsh there UK…..it may only be the WAFL but it’s the highest Aussie rules league in the state. He hasn’t been drafted in from the Meekatharra Bungarrows!

My mistake. I didn't check exactly who he last played for but my drift was he has some catch up before playing in the big league. Few are able to transition from VFL footy to AFL in little more than a couple of weeks. That said, it will be great if he makes it with us

Drafted players from state leagues with the right physical attributes and footy nous for afl. Players Who have done extremely well at the level against afl players, made state teams and finished high in best and fairests. Well they have usually made a decent transition to afl.

Blight is at Peel as well. Peel is i think aligned to the dockers.
He turns 23 this year and is physically ready to go. He is a big unit who moves pretty well.

In the short time he has been with us he has shown more than enough to say we need to have a good look at him.

The bonus here is we can play Balta forward.
The reality it does not matter if we prioritise him and Bauer and a few others for the rest of the season. The season is shot to buggery and this list is not getting any younger.

Can anyone tell me the odds of finishing in the 8 ?
What are the odds next year?
In anyone's language we are now in full on rebuild. We have a license to play kids and not be accused of that maligned Tank word for the rest of the year.
We have a license to actually try a few of the older players in new roles. Why wouldn't we.

I thought he levelled up last weekend. Racing at a very high level. Halved quite a few when out of position. Looked more composed and played with some authority. Fewer bungles. Better defence. Owned air and space.

VFL is a step up from the WAFL and he seems to have adapted well to the level
AFL is another 4 levels up and will really be good if he adapts

My question marks on him is his pace
looks a tad slow for AFL

Dont forget he was also one of WAFL's best (if not the best) against SANFL last month taking 13 marks.

He's a 23 y.o that has played quality footy against the next level below (or above in state footy's case) very recently.

Why draft him if we aren't going to find out what he has and play him soon?

We ether need to drop Miller or shift Balta forward to accommodate him as can't play all 3 plus Broad and Vlastuin.

Seems an easy choice considering the season is shot and it should be utilised to expose players to see what we have.

Why drop Miller ?

He has been our most reliable defender over the year imo and has just settled into his role
If Blight is to make it then it needs to be besides Miller as the FB/CHB

Totally agree he's been good and Leysy wouldn't move him.

But if we keep him back who would you play as our 2 key backs then Turk?

Currently we have Broad ,Miller & Balta
But if Blight does come into the team it has to be Balta that goes foward as we really dont have a 2nd KPF option ready to go

I really dont know much about Blight has he ever played foward

Closing speed for a key back is not as crucial as it once was when the full forwards had open space to lead into. Now it's pretty congested with defensive zones and stuff. Body positioning, strength and reading the flight are much more important for a key back. How quick are Lever, Sicily and Weitering?
Totally agree , speed is obviously a huge weapon in a defender , one of greatest in Grimes wouldn’t have been half the player he was without his elite speed . However as you say the way the modern game is played speed is not as bigger need as it once was. Definitely a bigger need for a forward than it is for a defender.

Not that I agree with Balta going forward again, it's looking like that's the only option if you play Blight.

Miller deserves his spot the rest of the way, I reckon with the amount of injuries we've had Miller runs top 10 in the B&F.
