Welcome Hugo Ralphsmith

He was interviewed on Dwayne's World on SEN today. I didn't hear the whole thing, but they played a little snippet when he mentioned sending Dusty off in his 300th on Saturday night. He quickly tried to explain it, but I'm sure people are wondering if he's accidentally let the cat out of the bag.
There you go. Hugo confirmed Duz is NOT retiring after 300 games. He meant to say 'chair him off' after 300 games.

No doubt he did some good things. I'm just not as excited as some.
He had 7 possessions, 5 clangers & 43% disposal efficiency.
A lot of hard running & some good defensive work but it’s marginal improvement IMHO.
But the Crows won most team stats so that it was almost strange that the Tigers won, although most were close.. Except 1 per centers, which were double to us 59/29.
Hugo contributed a heap to that vital statistical difference.

Hugo's first & last interview. WTF?

Most improved this year. He is the everywhere man. Let him loose on the wings on the G.
Flappers had to go to the next level on thurzdey night because Ralph will take the wing off him.

Good game by Hugo where others gave up the chase and didn’t come to play he was running up and down the wings all day

Yep, agreed he ran all day. But, he was running around like a new puppy. Hugos asset is his pace and that seems to be his only ace. So why not use it? Get him free, an outside player, give him the ball and let him run. His defensive stuff is kind of OK, but he struggles to get a tackle to stick. He needs to understand when the play is offensive and when it's defence, when we get the ball he needs to get immediately get into space.

Hugo was doing a lot of running to cover many of his disappointing team mates

He did. There was a spell when we were kicking to the PRE (I think it was the 3rd) and he literally ran past other team mates who were jogging to try and chase the Hawks, and when I say running past, in the matter of 20 seconds came from a few metres behind his team mates to be 20m in front of them.

He has very good aerobic capacity but appears more of a diesel engine than with the burst of required speed off the mark.
Defensive efforts appear to be "kind of ok" but realistically are not really ok if you want to be best 22 in a good team.
HRS is currently best 22 in the 2nd bottom team that is decimated by injuries and six years of sub par drafting and good luck to him - getting his chance and doing his best.
But he is not best 22 if we want to be a good side again, as his average defensive efforts, poor decision making and hitting of targets are not to the standard required.

The lad has shown a lot of improvement this season but still makes errors that cost us. That said he doesn't give up and runs and harries all game which is more than can be said for some of his ineffectual teammates

Agree. He was good yesterday. He is the perfect modern day winger.

Some of the criticism levelled towards him is bizarre.

Great points. He needs to be more dangerous. Unfortunately his passing i50 is pretty poor, not great at hitting a target.

But his effort cannot be questioned.

Statistically at least he’s barely improved at all but he does seem to be working inside his limitations & he has been stronger in the contest. Of that there’s no doubt. I’m still not convinced he’s best 23 with all players available.
Out of contract at years end. Be interesting to see if he’s recontracted or if we move him on.

He will 100% get a contract extension.

Now there’s a dilemma
What it is came down to Hugo or Marlion for the last spot?

A choice between a young winger who is barely good enough now but “potentially” could improve and play for a few years - and a bloke whose best is certainly behind him and likely can’t be expected to play beyond season ‘25 but “potentially” offers a couple of future draft picks

My compromise (so I’ve dodged my own question) would be to give Hugo 2 years and offer Marlion one year of payment on the basis that he retires at mid year
