Of all the young mids on our list, I'm not convinced that Martyn will make the grade.

Not sure whether it's his nightmare debut game clouding my judgement, but just don't see it with him. Hope I'm wrong.

Funny you should say that @T-Shirt Tommy I were just saying to the boys at the London Tavern today that the player i have seen at Punt Road this off-season the most so far is Will Martyn, he was drafted into the side as a solid inside mid proposition then they made him lose weight and tried to expand his outside game, now to me he seems to be back on the weights and i reckon he is inside mid or bust.
If he becomes a 100 game AFL player we will have done well in where he was drafted.
Agree is debut was terrible though.
I still have high hopes for RCD despite many who don't

Was surprised by his early re signing.

Needs to step up next year or he will probably be one of the first out the door as only got signed for the 1 year.
I wasn't - kids get 2 year contracts, and with the strength of our team/lack of opportunity at AFL coupled with no VFL games to talk about, all their development is screwed. WA and SA kids probably ahead of the Vic based clubs.
We obviously saw something to draft him, and his VFL numbers were OK when playing. You gotta back your development to get them over the line, if they're putting in the effort themselves.

I understand and fully support what you are saying General, and yes we do need to back ourselves in, but I was still surprised at the speed of us resigning him.

I got the impression that we were working through some salary cap stuff this off season, with a number of resignings seemingly delayed (Stack for example). We seemed to be taking a cautious approach with resigning players. Also thought it might have had to do with our draft strategy, given how many good picks we have this year.

The fact that we moved quickly with Martyn suggests the club is very happy with him.

Like so many of the youngsters, his first season 2020 was totally *smile* up by covid, nothing more than a handful of scratch matches n then he got thrown in the deep end a touch for his three senior games this year.
Would be a total waste of potential not to give the kid at least next year to show what he's actually got in the kit bag. Reckon there's far more potential for the youngsters to succeed than some posters think, it's simply a matter of them actually getting a decent run at some development game time.
Mansell, Dow, Martyn, Raaaallllph, R2D2, Delilah, Cummerbund, Biggie n Mojo all had barely got in the door before the *smile* hit the fan n it's been little more than training n scrimmage work for two years.
Hardly the proper basis for breaking into the reigning premiers side n then they get thrown in the sink or swim scenario when there's massive injury n form issues for the regular seniors.

His second game was pretty ok , not all youngins start like Dustin Martin

I agree on those 3 Posh. Still wondering why Cumbo was cut.
Gives the club a chance to have a look at him and Biggie on the rookie list and helps them be flexible with how long he/they stay on.

Also cheaper I'm just guessing i dont actually know about that.

Hugo is interesting. Does anybody have numbers on his combine 20m? 3km. Agility.

If only we still had Gus, eh? Miss your work, Broo.

6:12 for 2km (Will Martyn 6:16), 86cm running vertical - equal 5th at the Combine for both.
Results page on AFL site doesn't have him in the top-10 for the 20m (10th 2.972s) but his dad's diary says he was, so he must have been close.
No mention in the agility (Dow 8.061, 3rd; Cumberland 8.208, 8th).

November birthday.

Are you going to be an ok AFL player, a good player or a great player?
“I’ll be a great player,” he states confidently.
How great? What will they say about you in this draft in five years' time?
“They’ll look back and say I should have been a top-10 pick."

Ah. So his 3km was ok, spook? He may have been cooked when he was running in treacle, then.

If we had a 20m, we'd know.

Is he slow?

Some youngins star in their first game having their career best stats. Then gone without replicating. That is called the Polo effect

Martyn didn't have any trouble getting the ball in his debut game, just was caught with it too often. That run down on the boundary he was looking for the perfect option to open up. Something to work on with him.

Not sure of his agility but did feature in the top 10 in 2klm 6.12 and running vertical jump 86 cm
Hugo is a very good athlete and has developed good frame to become a AFL player. Has very good speed and goal awareness

Just have to get a bit more development into his contested game but a very good prospect
I really like what he brings

Bailey Smith is going to have Hugo on his wall.:))

I think we can allow a little hyperbole on this thread ToO. Hugo has a heap of x-factor and I’m looking forward to Round 1 to see how we roll out on that attacking wing.

We need Martyn or RCD standing tall in the cage match contested ball side of things, no doubt.

If we can’t find a contested beast from the kids we are pushing *smile* uphill in 2022.

Has some class but is an outside player that lacks pace and loses too many contests. Not as outside as Naish but not as good a kick either. Will be surprised if he makes it
