Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

Our boys really need to hit the gym hard . Clear to see that if you can’t break a tackle you are done

It will be until they get rid of it. It can't not be a farce
I just can't handle one player on the ground having to be a temporary statue every time someone takes a mark or wins a free.... even more so when they don't call play on.

You should be able to move backwards from the mark at any time.

What gets me, it happens often, player takes a mark and them takes a few steps sideways so they're not actually behind their mark when opponent has to stand. It's unfair.

When the rule was brought in, in addition to arguing how f**cked it was, I remember myself and a fair number of others arguing that a rule like this means they have to very rigorously police player going off their line. We have all been so surprised that this has not happened.

Has made a bad rule even worse.

I can't imagine how frustrated players are with this rule, it fights against the natural defensive instinct. I doubt any player except lazy Chol likes the rule.

If the player with the ball makes no attempt to go behind the mark
stand should not be called it should be play on

Said it before I'll say it again. If you want good umpires, hire ex-players.

Speaking of, I'm making my umpiring debut this Sunday for the Byron under-15s. I expect it to be a piece of p!ss, zero controversy. Will report.
Confirmed. Easy.

Had one kid (who didn't touch the ball all game, it's always those kids) trying to tell me what was and wasn't holding the ball. I said, "Mate, how about I umpire and you try to get a kick," and that was the end of it.

What was the lineup like after the game? :giggle:

I only saw one burning torch and it's Byron so was probably a fire-twirler. Got the 'didn't notice you' comment, which is always a sign of a job well done.

Well done then (y)
With your extensive experience you may want to send your resume into the afl umpires department.
