Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

Gold coast with the best free kick differential so far this year, thats right, the gameplan that dimma implemented at richmond, which was the reason for our terrible differential all these years, all of a sudden, becomes acceptable at gold coast, to the point where they have the best differential in the league. Seriously GAGF!!! What the *smile* is going on???!!!
Dimma also said nothing about the umps reaming us for 7 years....5 minutes after joining suns he complains about the HTB interpretation and AFL immediately change the rule....mid season.

Reckon we will be reamed big time down alphabet oval. 27-14
That's just standard weekly procedures. If we had first game of the round it would be more like 40 plus 3 50's - 9 with none in the forward half.

I reckon you are right.

I was snooping around Marvel this morning and heard a conversation between Dillon and McBurnie. They were talking about Hardwick commenting on the umpires, McBurnie was overheard saying "bloody Hardwick, who does he think he is, we'll show him this week, those Tigers are going to get an even bigger reaming that usual". The work experience kid pipes up "but Hardwicks coaching the Suns now". McBurnie looked confused, turns to Dillon and says "is he right?", Dillon said "I think I heard something about that".

McBurnie goes "Damn, well we can't screw over our lovechild, lets just *smile* the Tigers over as a proxy"

Laura Kane walked past singing Only Shades of Grey, turns to McBurnie and goes "umps rule" and walks off.

Wouldn't hold my breath that anything changes for the better.

A bit of deja vu all over again?

From 2022:

"The League wrote to all clubs on Monday, outlining that umpires will now be "less lenient towards players who have had prior opportunity and do not immediately and correctly dispose of the football"."

Yesterday:

"The AFL has instructed its umpires to immediately shorten the “reasonable time” component of holding the ball in a rare in-season rule change."
https://www.sen.com.au/news/2024/05...t-into-tweaked-holding-the-ball-adjudication/

Razor Ray has his say

Sounds alright but be prepared for a chaotic 1st week imo

Finally the AFL media is starting to recognise that congestion is a major issue. Lets see what if anything comes from it..
A new rule. A rule that will fail it's purpose and need to be scrapped. Yet it won't be. We will get another field umpire instead.

So it sounds like they’ll be applying the rule as stated from the AFL Laws of the Game?
Good start I suppose.
But why didn’t they start in 2022 when they told all the clubs they would?

I have no confidence in any ongoing improvement
That’s correct. They’re going to start, hopefully, adjudicating correctly, which they should have been doing all along, but trumpeting it as a rule change. The complete and utter incompetence of the AFL. These people couldn’t run a bath.

They ping us after a couple of seconds anyway so in theory we will benefit with frees coming back to us as they always give more time to our oppo
If you look at the Bulldogs game in particular what they were doing was just taking the tackle and win the clearance from the ball up, because they were dominating clearance.
If this changes that I am all for it because these days 99% of players getting tackled make zero attempt to dispose of the ball. As others have said the rule is very clear, if you have no prior opportunity and are tackled it is a ball up unless you have not made a reasonable attempt to dispose of the ball.
If it forces players to at least try and dispose of the ball and if they have free hands they have to dispose of it legally and within a reasonable time then I am ok with it.
But I have very little confidence.

and the other thing from that Razor Ray interview is that it confirms that the umpires don't adjudicate the rules as per the rule book, rather the interpretation of the day as stated by the AFL.

Razor: "Yeah, this is like how we did it in 2006". so that implies they've done it differently since then at least once but probably several times.

How's this AFL: give the umpires the rule book, get them to read it, and say "Now go do your *smile* job"

They probably did. for a week or 2.

Rare? i reckon at least once every year the interpretation of some rule is adjusted mid year, for a couple of weeks then as everyone forgets why the adjustment was made the interpretation drifts back again.

Yeah I can't stop wondering about this....maybe Benny or someone else told him to STFU?

or do it behind closed doors

I think a reaction to the suns coach bagging umpiring is always going to be different than the Tigers coach. Shouldn't be but it is.

What a horror show organisation the AFL has become.

Can't even apply their own rules with any degree of consistency.

Certain clubs clearly adjudicated differently than other clubs.

Rules introduced to increase scoring and reduce congestion, yet when they clearly fail to do either and prove to be a primary school like joke, they're maintained.

Changes made on the fly in season.

Everyone confused and annoyed.

Dill blames the coaches then does a 180 days later.

What a joke these twits have made of our once great, unique game.

As Balmy said, the rule book used to be 18 pages long...now it's 200 pages of gobbledygook.

Good luck trying to explain the game to someone who's never seen it before. The constant tinkering with the rules has turned Aussie Rules into a farce and sadly, the joke is on us.

Even funnier listening to Razorbrain virtually 'hosting' his segment with Wanker Whateley on Wednesday mornings. Wank is so boring he never goes hard on Razorbrain with some questions. It's all going through the motions stuff. Seems like he's scared when you hear his tone of voice sometimes.
