Tigers v Hawks game day

Only 14 games left.
Whilst the first loss in 12 months is by no means a disaster, the signs in all 3 games so far haven’t been good outside of our early start vs Carlton.
Right now we are miles off the kind of Richmond footy we love.

Is it Coronavirus blues?
Health protocols?
Empty stadiums?
Reduced salaries?
Staffing cuts?
Shorter quarters?
Loss of connection?
Or just a Premiership hangover?

We’re only getting a keyhole view through a TV set with piped in cheering so who knows..however from the couch for whatever reasons our intensity wasn’t there & our skill level was safe to say *smile*.

I felt we didn’t come to play which suggests to me our heart & head just isn’t in the game right now. That lack of hunger & mindset holds great concern to me for the rest of our season. I’m not holding my breath for it to turn around quickly either.

Time will tell but our season so far feels as off as everything else so far in 2020..

Was worried about an upset last night but the Saints game next week will tell us plenty about where the future of our year lies.
It’s not about the actual losing the game , it’s how you are playing the game . Last night as same previous week complete and utter rubbish .

I have a theory that we have built an endurance list that runs out quarters and runs out games better than anyone else. These shorter quarters are killing us.

We are a team that over powers teams. My guess with shorter quarters we wouldn't have beaten Brisbane or Geelong in the finals last year.

Bingo. 100% correct.
We would struggle to beat Footscray (we always do anyway)

We wear them down
Taking 20-25 minutes off the clock, just bends as over.
It's not like Prestia will take a pack mark or Lambert will play like Dean Kemp.
This is worse and maybe on par with the early years with Hardwick of 2010-2011.

To put last night's game in prospective.
Put your house on Stkilda

I might buy it if it was a small margin. We're being badly beaten for half a game or more. There's something not right with our team.

Rance, maybe? Hope we're not doing a post-mortem halfway through the year.

Different circumstances i know, but lets remember where we were after 3 rounds last year!

Hmm humans. Problem is our club is filled with them.

Massively disrupted pre-season for the most unquestionably systematic side in the comp.

As reigning premiers, other teams always have a point to prove, particularly in the early rounds. add a master coach on his own mission for revenge, the opposing force is even greater.

The shorter quarters have eliminated endurance from the game. As in, our greatest weapon.

Jack has had the occasional flash (ie the grand final) since his PCL but by and large he is off the pace. A concern. I would play him at CHF/wing with CCJ and Lynch deep.

We need to change things up just a little. Position, tactics, selection, probably a bit of each.

KMac for starters, perhaps Balta too. Imagine Balta and Jack on each wing.

We are a supremely proud club.

Yeah.

i wouldn’t like to be St Kilda next week.

I don’t think the extended break helped us either ,

Being premiers , a long break feeling happy and content doesn’t exactly help the psyche wanting to get out there and prove a point

If you just look at the Stats
You would think we won by 10 goals.
Time in forward half 52%/48%
Contested poss 121/108
Free's 23/19
Inside 50's 43/35
Centre clearances 11/7
Ground ball gets 86/74
Hard ball gets 31/30
Contested marks 9/3
Marks inside 50. 12/5
Duds on the ground 15/0

in recent times we would lose the stats - like inside 50’s - and still win.
Tonight was like watching a different team.
1. Have we been worked out
2. We did not appear to try and slice through with 45 degree kicks, attack the middle etc
Did Dimma try and coach new tactics? Evolve?
Don’t do it Dimma , Blake is gone. 2013-2016 clunkiness is not good. Players looked unsure tonight, first sign over-coaching.
Maybe that’s why Jack was frustrated. Remember last time he said ‘We tried to play like Hawthorn..’

I for one am not going to launch into the whole “Blake Caracalla” angle.

you can’t tell me that after three years with the club he didn’t absolutely imprint his intellectual property all over the place.

Besides, footy waits for nobody. If tactical change is required, we still have an elite coaching setup.

I completely agree. Endurance and pressure is our go...the most disappointing thing last night was that Hawthorn out pressured us. They were also cleverEr with the ball going fast at times and going slow at times. Their tap ons to advantage and forward handballs were also good...sound familiar. They out Richmonded Richmond. A lot of posters here complaining about our lack of skill. I actually think we never had any real skill and have always been an average skilled team in general even over the last 3 years. Even the GF last year was full of skill errors...we just got the ball back off GWS when ever we wanted. We couldn’t get the ball back off Hawthorn last night.

The AFL threw 6-6-6 at us to counter our spare back. We now have to work out how to out endurance and pressure teams across 16 min quarters. Those of you who are NFL fans will understand the “blitz all night” mentality. We have to be in their faces and pressure like there is no tomorrow every single week from now on in. This was lacking last night.

A good start wouldn’t go amiss in this shortened format either. Bolton misses a sitter and they go down the other end for a goal. Set the tone of what was to come really.

We’re *smile* at the moment.Beaten at our own game and when we did get the ball our skillls were pathetic. The B graders in our team are showing nothing ie: Graham,Soldo,Rioli,Pickett,Lambert & Castagna are lucky to be propped up by others.Other teams have worked us out and are exposing our lack of depth by the number of duds in our senior side. Some blokes don’t look interested.

They pressured us like we normally do to teams & we folded & looked 3rd rate. Plus it all starts in the middle & Ceglar dominated Soldo. Finally in the last we got control in the centre & looked something like our old selves. Teams have worked out to try & slow the game down so we can't generate our run & chaos game & it forces us to just bomb it long & we become slow & predictable. Doubt the Saints will play that style at Marvel but we have so much improvement to do in all areas that they probably won't need to anyway.

Also i wasn't a fan of the footage showing some of the boys having a laugh in the rooms straight after the game either.
