Tigers v Hawks game day

McQualter is our Forward/midfield coach and in charge of ball movement.

Pretty much all the areas we have fallen down in badly in the last two matches.

Carracalla's departure may have left a bigger hole than anyone realises.

I think the importance of the Caracella factor is a bit overstated.
This is a dual Premiership team that has overwhelmingly dominated the competition for 3 consecutive years.
Forward pressure/structure, as well as ball movement should be self intuitive in the playing group at this point.
The problem I see with the team is attitude and diminished hunger.

One positive for us last night, Nick Vlastiun, is one hell of a footballer. Would have to be the most underrated in the comp.

Should have been All Australian last year. We win the flag we have 2 in , the Cats win they normally have eleventeen in.

1. Many players seem to have come back slow and not sharp so we are not on the move for the forward handballs nor are we getting back to defend quickly enough nor moving with quick leads up forward. If no one leads into space then the only option is to bomb it long making it easy for the opposition tall backs.
2. Because we are slow it was easy for the hawks to man up very well in the first 3 qtrs with quick tackling, no space or time to look for a good option because we didn't have any. It seemed like the hawks were manning up all over the ground so credit to Clarkson but he just followed what Buckley did in the first qtr and a half last week.
3. Good sign was the way we at least kept working, didn't give up, and won the last qtr inside 50's so our endurance seems ok but the hawks endurance must be questioned. As someone said before this could be their best win this year.
4. Marlion seemed to have little confidence picking up the slippery yellow ball. His ball handling was sublime on GF day with the dry red ball.

Heard the same thing last year. Way too early.
There's a difference. Last year was 99% personnel. As soon as we got everyone back most knew we would be fine. This is not anything to do with personnel. This was effort, teamwork, run, workrate.

We were done over with our own gameplan by an ageing average unit. Troubling.

Here are the reasons I'm not super concerned and think we can get our act together sooner than later:

* No Dusty - Regardless of how well he plays he takes the best opposition player so was sorely missed
* Although we were beaten in the ruck contests, the difference wasn't spectacular. Hawks had 5 hitouts to advantage, we had 2. Saying that Ceglar did have 7 clearances, Soldo zero and that's the clearance difference as we had 5 less for the game. Need to address this issue
* We actually won the inside 50s convincingly in the end. Percentage time in forward half was 53% to 47%. We had 12 marks inside 50 to their 5. Our shot accuracy in front of goal was 28% to their 69%. Our forward structure is playing terribly and we're definitely not THAT bad so I am expecting improvement in that area.
* Hawks had 7 frees in forward 50 to our 1. That's the score difference right there. Tighten this area up and we're goals ahead.
* We haven't got our pressure game going yet. Pressure act points were almost the same, Hawks 173 to our 168 and again I expect this to improve.

In the end there is no way that was a 34 point difference game. All those gimme free kick goals to them and the frankly ridiculous misses by us (Lynch worst of all) was in effect the difference. We're better than that. And we'll get better. One thing that sticks in my mind is when Cotchin was asked what was the hardest aspect of getting back into proper training a few weeks back and he said the physical contact part of the game was the toughest skill to get back. And that's the pressure game that we rely on. No amount of training prepares you for match fitness.

Yeah it's different. Still need to win X games to have a chance.

Half-suspected a boilover, but not one that easy.

One thing ive noticed with Marlon ,

He likes to run with the ball extended well out in front of him ,arms out stretched , but he doesnt change it with a tackler bearing down on him or in heavy traffic , makes him vulnerable to a holding the ball

3 straight forward misses and a dropped mark for almost certain goal and we were within a goal. Despite the poor showing we blew a real chance in the last. 34 points flattered the old Hawk buggers in the end.
Could argue it flattered us.

It wasn't so much the ruck work that Soldo butchered, it was more the work around the ground. Couldn't take a defensive mark to save himself, fumbled (as did others) but was generally clumsy (e.g.cleaning up Higgins as he was about to take a mark). It's all that stuff that Soldo has improved on over the last 12 months but it all went back to the old Soldo last night.

Damien Hardwick - “Do we want to be playing our best football now? No.”

Stay calm, folks. Look back at the premiership seasons.

Some rickety performances early doors in 2017 and 2019.

we know what it takes to win the war. Folks should hold their fire until round 6-7.

Yeah, we looked stuffed from the opening minute. Like we were running in quick sand. Our physical conditioning is nowhere near it. Perhaps we are planning to be peak fitness at about rd 7-8 and make a run home from there.
Yes we looked slow from the start and that could be due to the boys doing a lot of distance running and medium pace rep. 200's etc. during iso. So their top speed is down but they can run out games which is a good place to be atm, provided they get a wriggle on soon to sharpen up by round 6-7 at the latest!

Agree, not one disposal in the second half. But for me a ruckman getting 7 clearances is also a substantial issue. Ceglar was their primary clearance winner by 3.

And remember 2018 when we were on top, trying to hold top form for most of the season. A build up in form as the season progresses is the plan.

Sometimes players just subconsciously take a “slow build” as a chance to coast.

Is it ideal? Course not. Particularly in a shortened season.

Faith in the conditioning people. It’s a fine line and a tough gig these days.

Just the way it is.

I only watched the match on playback after I knew the result which doesn't help but I just thought our whole team were not switched on and a second slow in movement and thought at various stages in the game. I expect the guys will have their mindsets right for next week and start our upwards movement up the ladder

We were slow because of the game plan we were trying to implement, we started playing the Richmond way in the last quarter.

So you are saying that we shouldn't play Marlion in night games?
