Tigers v Hawks game day

Just wondering AFL has finally got what Shocking has been looking for with all the rule changes. 666 stops us putting a player back like in 2017... Kick in change stops our manic manning up and pressure in the fwd line after a point like 2017 and now shortened quarters (which some idiots like Healy want to keep) stops the way we wear teams down and run over them in red time like 2019.... Not one of these rule changes actually helped the Tigers but did make it harder for us.

Too many players just didn't look interested in being there.
Motivation seems to have dropped right off in iso.

You can not play Jack R on a wing. He is too bloody slow. He has never been quick over distance (quick off the mark on a lead) but now he is like treacle.

That said I'm not sure what to do with him. Probably just back him to get back into some form and have some impact on the game; because the last two games he's had no impact at all and it's been very hard to watch.

stints up the ground is more my thinking.

one of the best wheel and kick players you are likely to see.

but yeah, I reckon he’s been iffy since the PCL

Ok.......we appear to be fit enough, it's time to practice our tackling, skills and game plan.........should be an easy enough fix.

I’ll predict one thing.

This will be Hawthorns best win of the season and come round 17 we,ll see them low 8 or just outside. Then off the cliff in 2021.

Or was that 3 things.....

He has the traits that would have reduced Isaac Smith's influence, which was enormous and unchallenged.

Maybe, although Smith was quite influential last 2 times both Kmac and Smith were in their respective sides in 2018. To me though the glaring deficiency has been in our disposal, improve that and we win our last 2 games.

Having slept on it, I'm less concerned after last night.

Our game plan is highly skilled (despite the medias attempts to denigrate our game plan to nothing more than kick and run), particularly when you look at the handball heavy gameplan we have. Those skills are currently well off and we invited that pressure on us. It was almost watching someone beat us at our game, though we are usually far better skillwise than we were last night. This then completely screwed with our defensive structures and exposed the backline to easy ball coming into their forward line for their forwards.

Fix these skill issues and I think we'd have had a very different game last night. Our defensive running was clearly not good enough, that should be hopefully fixed up with a big rev up to the players. Final quarter, as much as Dunstall tried to undersell it (Hawks were tired etc) was back to our best. I wonder how many of our MI50 were taken in the 4th. Our kicking for goal was poor in the 4th but general play was much closer to our best than the 1st 3 quarters. Hopefully that quarter will spur them into life for next week.

Richmond don't play like that. Either there is something up at the club, or we're in some sort of heavy load training period, but we dont just not try.

Sure, last year we had a bad start but in every game we looked like we were trying, it just wasn't clicking. Last night was just pathetic. Not sure when I've seen so many attempts to tackle with only one hand.
Being in a heavy training load period to catch up fitness does carry weight but wouldn't all teams be in the same boat? Be interesting to see if the Eagles have better passsion for the contest this week.

The main problem with the side is the shortened quarters which has put us back to the field. In the Collingwood game there is no doubt we would steam rolled them with extra time.Same with last nights game IMO.

Well that was terrible and I agree with a lot of the comments above. But, a few observations.

A lot of criticism about bombing it into the forward line, especially so since we were bombing it in to a forward line where we were outnumbered. But the issue is not just a tactical/strategic issue here. Yes, bombing it into the forward line is bad play but the problem is not that last kick inside 50. I would see a Richmond player at half back or the wing and they would look forward and there was nothing, they would look around and there was no support.

The thing is, when we play well, we stream forward. When a player is under pressure there is support around the contest, someone to handball to, a short kick option or the like. Plus, all the opposition players are under pressure, they can't just get an easy possession when a Richmond player gives up the ball and they don't have easy options to kick to in their own inside 50. This just wasn't there last night or against Collingwood. Plus, there was no space in the forward line, because there were no players making space.

I don't think our game plan has been worked out, we're not playing to our system. I don't think short quarters are harming us, we don't look fit enough to run over teams in normal length quarters.

I would sum it up in 3 points:
  • Not fast enough
  • Not fit enough
  • Not hungry enough
I think the long break after round 1 was a bigger problem for us. We just came off a massive grand final win, we finished the season later than other teams. I reckon our players had less motivation to train hard while the break was happening.

I also would not throw away the tape from this game. This is a good game to review because it shows what happens when we don't bring the running, the pressure and the application - when that happens we are second rate, as any team would.

I'm also sick of all the plaudits for Clarkson. Yep, great coach. Genius? Give me a break. He didn't work out our game, he watched our round 2 game against Collingwood and saw how we played, how the hunger and running weren't there, and knew if they applied pressure and played a bit of possession footy they could win quite easily. Didn't take a genius to work that out after round 2.

Some players likely will be dropped. Soldo as solo ruck is not working, bring back Nank! The players need to get fitter and hungrier. We can do this, we are 3 rounds in and have 1.5 wins. It will not happen in 1 week but Richmond has the team to come back from here and contend. But there will have to be a lot of effort put in to get back to where we were 6 months ago.

100% correct.
We have been playing really poor football but in both games we have had ample opportunities to win them if we had the extra 20 minutes.
0.4 last week in the last qtr
2.6 last night.
You can't have Riewodlt and lynch missing under 14 grade set shots.
Especially Riewodlt, he looks lost.

Our skill level has been the biggest issue. Kmac doesn't help there.

Clicked 'like' by mistake; meant to hit reply. I have to admit, we need KMac's running power without BEllis. Yes, he doesn't have great kicking skills but also brings further size, marking power with his height and an area he has improved, along with grunt and a bit of hurt/tackling force. All of which we lack now. He can just bomb to the top of the square - same as everybody else!!

Really wondering about letting Butler go, and even Menadue, after looking at the likes of Castagna, Rioli and Lambert last night.
Witches' hats for most of the night; and in Pies game too.

Yeah, we looked stuffed from the opening minute. Like we were running in quick sand. Our physical conditioning is nowhere near it. Perhaps we are planning to be peak fitness at about rd 7-8 and make a run home from there.

Agree with all of the above but I saw things I really haven’t seen much in the 3 years.

Not putting the body on the line.
A few players uncharacteristically dropping the head when the high ball was coming in and were underneath.
Pulling out of contests.

My thoughts.

McQualter is our Forward/midfield coach and in charge of ball movement.

Pretty much all the areas we have fallen down in badly in the last two matches.

Carracalla's departure may have left a bigger hole than anyone realises.

Time will tell.

Yep, those are not good signs.

But, they can be fixed. If not fixed 2020 will not be good.

watching the Bummers v Swans he doesn't seem to have helped much at Winded Dill..
it's not like his knowledge left with him, surely a fair bit of it rubbed off?
but i don't rate McQualter
