Thomson Dow

Hopefully we arent getting overly excited by the performance of the Fantastic Five after an intra-club match sim in Feb 2026 because they will have actually performed at AFL level by that age.
You thinking the quality of the opposition flattered them?

Yeah, that and the fact some his kicks went along the ground.
But at least the kicks were in the direction of teammates unlike Dow who is frankly a terrible kick, and badly one-sided too. Sorry i’m unconvinced on Dow.

Yes. Shank became Shedda once we knew what he was about.

His kicking looked bad because he was too smart for most of his teammates. Dow could be the same. Can open the game up like Shedda used to
Despite the criticism of some, quite a few of us liked Shedda very early despite some mistakes because it was apparent he was trying to make things happen.
Back when Shedda started we were a pretty ordinary as a team. As the team around him got better, Shane came into his own & he became a triple Premiership playmaker. The rest is history & those early critics were singing his praises.
Dow’s journey so far is a bit different. He’s not played much snr footy given he’s been behind a Premiership midfield & development was also curbed through covid. This has probably stalled his progress a little bit but after a number of preseasons now he looks stronger & fitter. I’ve always liked his movement but like most have had concerns about his lack of a left foot. Whilst excellent the other day a scratch match isn’t AFL level match play. His kicking to my eye was decent enough in the simulation but it will come under more scrutiny at AFL level. I’m hopeful Yze will have had him working on improving those skills. That said he was pretty good in the AFL game against Port late last year too earning another deal.
Newman has sung his praises this preseason & we saw the other day why. Edwards too had a bit to do with his recruitment.
What I really like that our other mids lack (Shai aside), is his ability to get separation on his opponents. He is electric in traffic. That strength will mask some of his flaws. Again though he’ll have less time at AFL level. Fingers crossed his excellent start translates..

On the Edwards Dow comparisons. Shane played 16 games in his first year alone while Dow has played 17 games in 4 seasons to date. Very rare for a player to have played so few games in their first four years (without serious injury) to go on to any meaningful career.

Having said that, good on Dow for playing well, even if it was just an intra club match.

in one of Dow's early games the team was coming off at half time
I thought "who's that , they are just a baby " it was Dow , I believe that equates to not just baby faced but physically less mature
he is more mature in the face now , hopefully that is also in body and mind

worth remembering Paddy was a slow maturer too and the Blues ran out of patience and then he clicked in the VFL and has been given a life line by the Saints

I like what I saw in the match sim but would to see what he can do in the season proper , a lot more heat when there are 4 points at stake

Yeah but in Shedda's first year we finished last and in Thommo's we won the flag. He's no Shedda but he is on the rise.

Different teams though. Edwards was able to get into the team as the quality was crap whereas Dow has had to bide his time behind Dusty, Cotch, Prestia, Taranto, Edwards (cooncidentally) etc

Yeah not sure why people think Dow is the next Edwards.

Edwards was ELITE.
You obviously can’t or don’t want to recall Shedda’s first 4 years. Not close to elite
Was gifted games whilst most supporters howled.
Dow has Edwards like traits. That’s about where it sits for now. Balls in his court

Pray tell all those who think Dow is the next Edwards? I'll wait.
Sorry? What?

I do recall Edwards first few years. But Dow is being compared to what Edwards became and not how he started.

On Eddie - Having a boring afternoon and found this thread from 2009.

Tooheys firmly in Eddie's corner even back then. Not many other long-term posters were.

The downside - The big man was also comparing Eddie's pending rise to Tambling's. :D

Is Dow actually qualified to be a member of the fantastic five?

Name all the posters who think Dow will be the next Edwards. Not that hard to understand is it?
I didn’t understand what you were asking. Go back and read what you wrote.

I am surprised you have given out some praise considering your negative comments all summer.

Not sure if you realize Dow arrived at a club fresh from winning its third premiership , shedda arrived after we d won a wooden spoon , games were a little easier to come by back then
