The Dusty 300th celebration thread

Genuinely insightful words from Edwards. He should be in the media:

“I’ve probably never seen someone so agile at his weight before, he’s got an amazing low centre of gravity for his height as well. And he has much better endurance than people probably give him credit for.
“So he’s the whole package, but his brain is probably his biggest asset. He’s probably the smartest player I’ve ever played with ... he sees the game on another level and every touch he gets he’s trying to get the team a goal. There’s no padding to what he does. Everything is high damage, and he gets a lot of it in almost any situation in the front half.”

Edwards, notably, spoke of Martin in the present tense – what he is – and went so far as to call Dusty Richmond’s safety blanket and a source of reassurance for the team. “There was some element to hanging in there as a team, making the game as even as possible knowing we’ve got this guy in our front half that can take us over the line and lifts in the biggest moments. He’s somewhat of a safety blanket, and he relieved a lot of anxiety for us other players.”
Interesting that he says Martin is the smartest player he's ever played with.

He'd obviously know better than my mug eye but I feel like Dustin is the most instinctive player I've seen. Dustin is obviously a very smart footballer but I'd give the smartest player mantle to to any of Riewoldt, Grigg or Edwards first.

Sorry caesar, without looking I thought you were just putting up the link for the Hun paper article which I read this morn, it was just a rehash of stuff that's been out there for years about the Swannies offer for pick 3

Take it easy I just disagree very strongly no big deal. Yeah Grigg was smart I agree with that bit.
And further it's not demeaning to Grigg - we are talking Dusty here

Dusty is one of these rare players that once the ball is in hand, the entire ground opens up for him. It’s like some sort of internal radar. At his peak, he was also one of them who slowed down time and everything revolved around him.

Didn't expect Dusty to sit next to KB. Reckon it would have been a little frosty tbh.
I think Dusty is the forgiving type. If Emma Murray influenced Dusty, it would also be to tell him that what happened in the past is done with. I’m sure Dusty and KB would have had interactions before this photo was taken.

yes. you can't be a mindfulness pin up boy, and hold a grudge for a decade over something someone said.

he probably never even knew he said it

glad we didn't sack him though

Some thoughts RE Dusty..

His form from 2017-2020 commanded the greatest respect. Pound-for-pound, I think it's as dominant a four-year stretch as we've seen from any player this century. I attended the '17 and '19 grand finals and saw it first-hand.

But that said, something else, for me at least, put him in even higher esteem: his return from an acute kidney injury.

I think it's severely undersold how significant this was.

I've been through stage 5 kidney failure (not due to sport, but an acute kidney injury is an acute kidney injury), and it's unimaginable, unforgettable, out-of-this-world pain. It takes some serious getting over - physically, emotionally, psychologically - if you pull through.

Well, the last thing I could've ever wanted to do or imagined doing in the time after was playing a game of footy, anywhere. Martin came back and did so at the elite level.

With the highly talented players, we tend not to focus on their courage or resilience as much, if at all, because of their highlight reels.

But Martin's comeback to a contact sport from this dreadful injury is and was as courageous as it gets.

I'm sure this won't be lost on him or those close to him as they toast and reflect on 300 this weekend.

Little tear in my eye after watch the dusty doc on the Richmond page.
Same here. Dimma reckons he was realistically scared that Duz would've left for foldnorf and later cried like a kid when Duz confirmed he was staying.

Ralph Carr says Duz predicted we win the 2017 flag one year earlier. Wow.

Duz was an Aints supporter. Great photo with Nicky Winmar.
