The Dusty 300th celebration thread

Every geelong person i know freely admits danger isnt fit to carry dustys boots.

Its a very strange comparison and bizarre that Matthews propogated it.

Dusty wouldnt care. It annoys me, but i dont really care.

I know that

1. Dustin Martin is the greatest footy player ever and
2. He coincided his greatness with me raising a family and we were there, and will continue to be there, to watch all the great moment live. He feels like a member of our family.

Just writing that brings tears to my eyes.

What fortune. What times.

Dustin Martin; the greatest footy player ever
I agree Ezy that Dusty deserves to be ranked ahead of Danger for all the reasons that people mention but I think that the argument does get diminished a bit when people say that Dangerfield isn't and hasn't been a great player. I know some people don't like him but that should be separated from any discussion about how good he has been.
By any measure he is one of the best players of his generation and he has been consistently good for a long period of time.
But he is behind Dusty

dusty and dangerfield H&A record are almost identical

24disposals (10/13 Contested) , a goal and 4/5 clearances.

remarkably identical over 625 collective games. Dangers H&A record is statistically is marginally better

but one has 3/3 in GF's and 3 norm smiths

one elevates his averages significantly in finals

dusty kicks over twice as many goals in finals as H&A.

Dusty doubled his output over 11 finals.

Dangerfield finals output is significantly lower than his H&A.

so,

how can anyone keep a straight face and say the H&A specialist is the better player,

when the finals specialist, Mr.Ulitmate Success Delivery Man, has a H&A record exactly as good?

it simply doesn't stand scrutiny,

and suggest empiracally, that Leigh Matthews almost certainly has the encephalitis

I've been trying to find the meme of Dusty just before he kicked his 4th in the 2020 Grand Final which is captioned something like "here we see the Geelong players surrounded", and its just Dusty but surrounded by 5 Geelong players. If someone knows what I'm talking about and can post it I'd really appreciate it.

agree, see above.

anyone with Dusty's H&A record over 300 games, plus one flag and a Brownlow,

is unequivocally a champion.

Danger is a superb, explosive, damaging, durable, consistent, footy player,

who consistently didn't handle the pressure of finals footy, until 2022.

and doesn't deserve to be spoken in the same breath as

Dustin Martin, the greatest of all time

Credit where it's due. This package from the AFL is great.

So is this article.

Gary Ayres quote when describing Dusty in the 2020 GF:
“it was greatness at it’s peak”

Thats a 1%er and a rare truth

99% would frame it

'It was probably greatness somewhere near its peak'

I really dont get the distortion of perspective applied to Dusty.

Hes the greatest player to ever pull on footy boots. Ever.

Just my opinion but if we could beat the Hawks, Dusty got 3 goals and was BOG that’d be a fitting end for him and he could just say “thanks, that’ll do me”.

Yeh, surely the best players should be judged on how they perform in the games that mean the most against the best opposition?

It's how the best of any sport are defined - in tennis it's the majors, in golf the same. In athletics it's Olympics and World Champ's.

The weighting must be slanted towards performances in those games that mean the most when the pressure is the highest.

Dusty is inarguably the greatest finals performer in the history of the game. The field is obviously smaller becasue it is a team game and not every player has the fortune to play in as many finals as dusty. But maybe it's no coincidence that you get to play a lot of finals when you keep winning them!

Clearly dusty must be in the argument for the greatest of all time.

I don’t believe he thinks like that. I suspect he just likes playing footy.
My suspicion has always been he will play in 2025 for the tigers.

I can't see Dusty retiring immediately after the game on Saturday. If as reported, the final year of his 7 year deal is 1.4m, he'll be giving up half a mil by not playing out the year.

Cotch spoke of making a pact with Dusty at the end of 2016
and in 2017 we saw dusty sharing the ball around in a very unselfish manner
think team and club orientated
and all week we keep hearing that theme from past players

the buzz around the 300th might turn him off a lot
But hopefully he sees there is work to do and value in keeping the side together and the end of 2025 might be a better time to step aside

I'd love him to do 2 or 3 more years , it really could be the bridge to another successful period

I’ve seen that, too. It’s brilliant. 5 Geelong players have walked into an ambush and are surrounded by Dustin Martin.

good point re: tennis majors.

ive never heard anyone say 'Novax Jokervich is the greatest big game player of all time, but jeez, Grigor Dimitrov made a hell of a lot of quarter finals'

In the leadup to the US Open golf (on their preview show which is great BTW) they showed a clip of Roger Federer's speech at some uni where he received a doctorate.

Part of his speech he said he won around 80% of his matches in his career. He asked the audience how many points they think he won in all those matches? It was 54%!
So he only won just over half the points he ever played but 80% of the matches. That is a real statistical anomaly. What that says to me is he won the most important points - when the pressure was at its greatest.

I think you have nailed it eZy - Dusty is the greatest!

Once again, all confirmed Duz will NOT retire after this 300th game.

One thing about that game was the way Dusty got into Danger at centre bounces after his hit on NV.
Both knew it hadn't been an accident and Dusty let him know all about it.

Looking at both the coaches and presidents remarks today, it seems that no one has any idea whether he will retire or play on next year. Dusty won't be pushed. He will decide when he is ready.

I think Dangerfield should now be know as Andy Roddick. World No.1 for a period of time but won one major from 5 finals. When they talk great players Roddick is not in the conversation.
