Yeah agree. And on the head knocks. For years he used to be a big fan. spoke about him as the standout best, now he says "only" Norm Smiths? Did he actually say that?Think age and countless head knocks may be affecting Leigh's memory.
He downplayed Dusty by saying it was only the 3 Norm Smith games that have made his reputation.
It was Leigh who back in 2017 said it was the most dominant season ever by a player. https://www.foxsports.com.au/fantas...n/news-story/5c275fa2d60f6da15d44b51d3db208bd
Note that this was before Dusty won the first of his 3 Norm Smith's.
Dusty won everything that year and wasn't far off it in the other years 2018 - 2020.
Personally I would rank my best players this century as
1: Dusty
2: Judd - captained and led 2 clubs playing inside mid
3: Ablett Jr - as above led 2 clubs as an inside mid
4: Pendlebury - led from the front in the hottest area
5: Cripps - as above, led from the front
6: Franklin - yes a brilliant player but was one out most of the time.
7: Dangerfield - a good player but hardly led his team.
I would rank them that way because it is a lot harder to dominate in the midfield.
one of my cherished memories of Dusty that taps into the point from Tenacious was his unselfish playAnother chance to repeat (yes - again and again) a personal favourite aspect of Dusty - which is the way he responds after he kicks a goal
So many prima donna players from other clubs run immediately to the boundary line to engage the crowd. They'll soak up the personal glory with high fives or fist pumping and basically make themselves the sole focus.
Not our Dusty.
His natural reaction is to turn inwards and away from the goal and the crowd and toward his team mates. The celebration is totally shared with the players around him and he acknowledges the blokes down the field that might have been involved in the build up.
It’s such a simple thing but it typifies him - and of course we can hope to see it a few times on Saturday
Probably the thing about Dusty that sets him above all the rest for me is how he always brought the lessor and unknown players into the game, simply by trusting them within play.one of my cherished memories of Dusty that taps into the point from Tenacious was his unselfish play
either to dish off goals
but to deliberately pick out unfashionable or new players like Pickett in the GF
in 2017 it was huge and reckon it was a big part of building a great team , it brought the best out of other players
who may have otherwise lacked confidence
he was picking out Lloyd, Castagna , Butler etc instead of just going to Jack or having a shot himself
another piece of quite leadership , I have forgotten the exact game , either 2019 prelim or 2020 GF , 3/4 huddle
Dusty weaving thru the huddle , making eye contact with each player and gave a nod or a tap , no obvious talking
no arm waving , all very discreet and reckon he got all players
just for a moment imagine if Dusty comes direct to you , makes eye direct contact and a " we've got this " or "you with me"
your chest would explode , you'd walk bare foot over hot coals to do something for the team
sometimes less is more , especially when it comes to talking
only time I cried at the footy. The Prelim final 2017, that glorious day when we packed the MCG with 90,000 Tiger fans. First goal last quarter ...Dusty, Dusty...Dusty !!!!
They were broken when he snapped the one before HT. I had hundreds of messages from friends and family all asking are we going to win or are we dead? Answered the major ones and told them to think back what Dusty has done to them in Finals. They were 4 of the most amazing goals you'll ever see in a GF and only Dusty could've done it under the pressure and degree of difficulty. My Geelong mate still says you can't make that *smile* up and I still think he believes it never happened and was just some nightmare. lol ,So great to also have put a final dagger in that campaigner Ablett Jr. What a night and week of celebrations. Then he came out after half time and punched them out, did the same in the 2020 GF
He's right! My Geelong mate still says you can't make that *smile* up
1.Ablett Sr.
2 Barlett
3. Dusty
4. Leigh Matthews
5 Franklin
6. Wayne Carey
7. Judd
8. Ablett Jr
9. Marcus Bontempelli
10. Roger Dean + Trent Cotchin for leadership and blood sweat and tears for the great club
Showing my age and going senile . lolEither its national dyslexia week or you got the wrong thread TP
My new screen saver
Magical stuff. What a picture, the immortals, the legends, big game players. So very proud to be a Richmond Supporter. God bless Richmond, the team, its supporters, admin now and the future. My new screen saver
This is why I love the Tigers. Six of the best ever. Thinking of how much I miss Jack and Cotch, I hope Dusty keeps playing with us next year. I couldn't watch him in a different jumper. Just like Richo....he is OURS!
At least 2 of them played in every premiership win we have had since 1967.
