The Dusty 300th celebration thread

Disagree on that. It's all part of the banter.
I remember a Collingwood banner around 1983.
Something to the effect of

Poor old Richmond
Caught without a Cloke and it Raines.
I was at that game as a kid. It was
"Richmond will be lost in the Woods without a Cloke when it Raines"

Phil Walsh destroyed us on his way to the league's Best First Year Player award.

Just a random thought that popped into my mind, but one I think of whenever the Blues play Richmond.

That Carlton banner a few years back bagging Dusty and his haircut, while likening his barber 'vision impaired' to Richmond's five-year plan.
https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/...g/news-story/af57c1d89042ded30574c172054eb50c

It was cringeworthy at the time, but probably more so now than it ever was, given his standing and legacy in the game. The cheersquad should be embarrassed. It wasn't clever, nor funny. Just a desperate attempt at whatever it was they were trying to achieve by bagging out an opposition player in public.

Anyhow, that was Round 1, 2017. The Tigers won the game comfortably, won the flag later that year with Martin winning the Norm Smith, and since two more in a couple more flags.

He wouldn't have lost a wink of sleep over it, but it endures as an embarrassing look for those involved.
I think of this banner often too, BluesBloke. Don't be embarrassed it was one of the greatest things to ever happen! Round 1 2017, the start of the greatest era of tiger dominance period. The cumulation of the most ambitious plan a CEO ever had the balls to speak out loud, the greatest season by a bloke with a bad haircut ever. That banner sits in my memory and brings me joy every time I think of it. Has a club ever got something so wrong? Misread a situation so perfectly? I don't think so.

I LOVE THE CLUB SO MUCH’

Described by his coach as a “shy guy”, Dustin Martin put on a brave face.
Hawthorn spoiled his 300th game party with a 48-point win at the MCG on Saturday, but Martin made sure to acknowledge an adoring crowd which had numbered a staggering 92,311.
He stood in the centre of the venue where he has done much of his best work across a 15-year career and waved to every grandstand amid a standing ovation for the ages.
In a subsequent on-ground interview, Martin described his week as “surreal”.
“Disappointing result for the club, but I love the Tiger Army so much,” Martin said.
“I love the club so much. It means the absolute world to me. All the love I received this week has just meant the absolute world to me, so thanks to everyone who sent me a message, social media, on the radio. I felt so loved this week so I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
A 48-point loss soured the mood in the Richmond rooms a little post-game, but plenty more love for Martin was shown.
Ex-teammates including Ben Cousins, Brett Deledio, Trent Cotchin, Jack Riewoldt, Jake King and Josh Caddy were all present. So too was Martin’s manager, Ralph Carr, and former Tigers assistant Mark Williams.
Assistant coach Chris Newman was Martin’s first captain in his debut against Carlton in round 1, 2010.
Also shattered by the result, he couldn’t help but crack a smile.
“It seems like a thousand years ago now,” Newman said of Martin’s debut match.
“You look at his journey now and you couldn’t be more proud of the way he’s progressed through his journey as a footballer.
“There’s not too many boxes he hasn’t ticked.
“I think the one thing I’ve noticed coming back into the club is just how he’s grown as a person. He wouldn’t have said much in his first years at the club when I was there.
“He probably said more to the media than what he said around the club in the early days. But now he speaks up in meetings, he has influence around the group with his leadership.
“He’s just been an amazing representation of everything that the Richmond Football Club stands for.
“Although we didn’t get the results and I was really disappointed for him, I’m glad he had his moment because he deserves it.”
Martin quashed any immediate retirement rumours when asked if fans would see him back after the club’s bye.
“Yeah mate, freshen up for the bye and see how we go,” he said.
The Tigers don’t yet know what the future holds for their out-of-contract champion beyond this year.
However, the Tiger Army will hope to savour some more special Dusty moments in the second half of the season – just like his vintage goal from 50m on the run in the opening quarter.
“He’ll discuss that as it gets closer to the end of the year,” Richmond coach Adem Yze said.
“Right now, he’s in a really good space. He’s training well, he’s enjoying training, and he’s loving being around the footy club.
“He’ll come back in on Friday fresh, as he has done, and we’ll look forward to the rest of the season.”
Martin became just the seventh Richmond player to reach 300 games, joining Kevin Bartlett, Jack Dyer, Francis Bourke, Shane Edwards, Riewoldt and Cotchin.

I dunno DNT, the old " Can you smell what the blues are cooking " would have to go down as one of the best misread n big note banners ever. 15 years an entire generation of players n half a dozen coaches later, there's still a fairly rancid mess in the bottom of the pot.

And “They know we’re coming” in 2008 or thereabouts. 16 years and counting, it’s been a slowwww trip

I did go to the game saying I wanted to at least see one Dusty moment, we didn't have to wait long :), alas the game not his best.

Still the 92,000 crowd, half there just for Dusty, and his emotional post game speech expressing his love for the club, thanking the Tiger Army and waving to all sections of the G made it a privilege to be there.

PS. Great to see most of the 92,000 stayed to make reverence to the great man.

DRiolis goal of the year is the only comparable roar I can think of in a home and away game .

Close to the best Home and away reaction I have seen

Dustin's comment on the crowd reaction to his goal: "old school." Hard to believe 5 years have passed since 2019

Titus o Reilly gold…. Man I laughed

Personally, I think Richmond should honour him by naming their media room after him.

“The Dustin Martin Media Centre” has a nice ring to it.
