Talking Politics

I am most impressed with Julia Gillard. I had my reservations until I saw her as the guest speaker at a local dinner. She was natural, witty, compassionate and tuned into the needs of rural Victoria. It was good to hear a politition who was not just speaking in platitudes. She has a strong sense of social justice. (I had previously thought she appeared a bit "hard" on the TV.)

Likewise I was very impressed with Kevin Rudd on the 7:30 report last night.

I am looking forward to seening them working together.

Rudd..... a new broom sweeps clean, but he should watch his back. I think the redhead will be sharpening up her knife in the not too distant future.

Won't matter. Costello has being carrying around a drawer full of sharp knives for years all to no effect. It is Rudd's performance alone that will dtermine his fate.

The trouble for Kim Beazley was that people had stopped listening; that's not the case now. The public is clearly curious about Kevin Rudd. Keeping them listening is the challenge.

Dunno IA
I reckon big Kim had nothing to say. Nice bloke and all, but that's about it.

Yes, it will be Rudd's ability to present NEW policy whilst he has the public interest that should be the key.
Will be an excellent opportunity to present NEW policy on sustainability & the environment.

And if he can rebuild relationships between the Australian Islamic community & other Australians, this would be telling also.

I'd keep Ruddy's missus (?) in the background

Why?
Therese is highly thought of/sought after in her field (Job Creation) and has several contracts from the UK, US as well as Australia.
And as for Kevin being a d*d, sounds to me like a tiny bit of worry sneaking into the conservative camp. (Don't know why, Australians have shown time and time again they prefer their PMs to be cunning, not intelligent.)
Kevin's article in the Monthly was well written and thought provoking.

Particularly if they lose the next election.

wasn't convinced on Rudd, but since he's been in, he's been very clam and clear with his messages. Poles apart from Bomber, who's time was up, hopeless. Rudds apointment has a lot of similarities to Howard's. Nobody said they had any talent at the time, party was a rabble, went for a boring nerd because there was nobody else, 11 years later...

The electorate seems to like boring nerdy types of leaders, got me stuffed why but there it is. I'm glad they have someone who can at least deliver a half convincing message.

Rudd will be given a decent chance even if he loses. Those who think Gilliard will challenge are off the mark, he'll be given 2 elections to win.

Menzies, Hawke, Fraser

By the way I don't think Howard has been much of a PM, brilliant politician, but not much in the way of achievment. Has squandered an unprecedented period of national prosperity in my opinion, a perios of which the foundation was laid by PK, who did the economic hard yards.

So putting that aside, i'll use the measure of 'any good as a pm' as being someone who was in for a decent stint. All the above 3, whether you liked them or not, were not boring nerds

One more thing re Howard, he's become much less of a boring nerd over the last 3 years. Has been rapidly becoming more leader-like, his place in history is assured, he has an inept opposition, and a wealth of experience.

OK you've shot down your own argument. The electorate will put as Prime Minister a person who isn't a boring nerdy type if they percieve them as the best alternative. Labor have never had a better alternative to JH.
