Steve Morris F/S

I'm getting what your saying, so your happy with him just stopping his opponent
But happens when he needs to get rid of the ball?

ur making it sound like every disposal is a turn over, which it wasnt and to answer ur question i would take 3 or 4 turnovers with betts or garlett having zero effect on the score board then every kick hitting their target with betts kicking 6. what would u like? id take the few turnovers any day of the week to stop those 2 who have cut us up most times....of course i want our backs hitting targets, being skillful etc but as stated previously Morris's kicking efficiency in SA was around the 80% mark maybe a tad higher and was the No 1 ranking player for defensive rebounds...So im gonna cut him some slack on 2 NAB cup games....

I'm not saying anymore, I will wait and see.
I didnt see him the SANFL,
Goodluck luck to him...

The one certainty in the pre-season game IMO is that the kicking is sub-standard. I have never really understood why it is so bad but it always is, and magically it improves 100% in the last few weeks before the seaon starts. I would definently take a lot more notice of his SANFL stats than his NAB stats at this stage.
All clubs struggle during preseason with skills and decision making. It's easy during summer training because there's no pressure or intensity. As the games and workload ramp up so do the skill errors, temporarily.
First couple of real games theres still a fair bit of skill errors because the pressure ramps up another notch from preseason. Once the players have had a settling in period you can make far better assessments of their capacity, especially for the newer players.

if hes playing back pocket his main priority is to stop the opposition small fwds from kicking goals. i dont care if his kicking is avg, as long as betts/garlett dont kick more that one or two that'll do us fine. remember a defenders FIRST priority should be to DEFEND, not to have a beautiful kick to set up play etc. we dont have any small back pocket DEFENDER

Betts will rip him to shreds. Morris is tough and competitve which is a good start; but is rubbish overhead, poor below his knees, struggles to hit short targets by foot and overruns contests because he has straight line speed but no agility. Betts is looking at that and has already circled the date in the calender. I hope he makes it but inking him in for the first-18 is a either desperate or optimistic.

I recall reading an article on Steve when he was first drafted, saying how he would love to play round 1 but he really had to improve his skills. I guess it is unfair to right him off after 2 NAB games but it is a big worry.

totally disagree lennox guess we'll just have to wait for RD 1 yeah providing morris gets the gig! the problem with defenders lining up on betts and co is that they play to loose, morris will play tight and hard on betts and has the cat like reflexes to curtail him around the packs...

Would he be at RFC if his name wasn't Morris?
He missed selection in 4 previous drafts.
If he was any good, he would be in black & white.
Does just tackling blokes earn you a spot in our side?
Had big questions marks on him before we picked him and now watching him in 2 games and at training, I can't see how much he can improve his kicking. He dosent kick through the ball and his kicks always seem to drop really short.

Can I be proven wrong I really I hope he does improve his kicking action, but there a good chance if he dies play senior football this year his kicking will let him down.
Then again we will go through it again, richmond can't kick, Richmond recruits guys that can't kick etc

Yes. Somebody has to do it. :hihi

Saw him do this once last week. To suggest it happens all the time, is to over exaggerate. There is no where near enough data on his game to pigeon hole him just yet.

To be fair I think that's part of the standard script for all new players at a club "I'll work hard on my deficiencies, try me hardest and hopefully make the team through hard work, dedication and commitment". I'm not sure new players are allowed to say 'I'm a monty for Round 1 and I'll walk away with 3 brownlow votes" anymore.

unfortunately...on exposed form....you are probably right

Not sure Betts would be expecting Morris to play on him. Wouldn't we have other options for him to consider? Who is up to the job?

we aint got anyone else to stop betts....
grimes is prob our purest old fashioned stopper defender type. rance prob next....other than that??????

Wouldn't Dea have the speed, stamina and agility to match Betts ? May not have the footy brain yet.

Has Whitey had a crack on him before?

Last year White took Yarran, who was being touted as going to have a massive season, to the cleaners. I wouldn't mind seeing White start on him again.
