Steve Morris F/S

his kicking hasnt been flash so far, but i reckon ive read his efficiency was pretty good last year in the SANFL so perhaps he does just need a bit more experience, to relax a little and take his time and his kicking will improve.

it will be interesting to see how he does go on the likes of Betts if he does get a round 1 gig. there is a bit of a difference between charging in hard and fast and actually playing tight on a nimble forward. hopefully he can do both.

I think both Morris and Ellis play round 1.

Different roles for both. Morris will be the lockdown defender and Ellis will play in the backhalf, maybe as that winger that drops into the back half but more as a rebounder.

Couple of things I think he brings is pace, hardness and at the pill and a total lack of respect for his own welfare. The way he throws himself at it disrupts the opposition easy possessions in their forward line and will cause a few forwards a headache in more ways than one. Hopefully he plays round one and lines up on Betts who likes it as easy as he can get it, Betts will be stuffed at 1/4 time after chasing Morris around and wearing a few decent tackles.

Would love to see him line up on milne too, Milney will be a little smart for him in his first season but if we can limit the good supply to him, Morris will touch him up in the rough stuff.

I hope he plays on Ballantyne and gets a 12 week suspension for something really naughty.

Depends on Smith & Ellis really.

Good early signs from both of them.

Wouldn't that only count if the club rated Smith higher than Ellis ?

Betts first. 9 week suspension, back for Freo Round 11, then back for the finals. The ultimate "impact player".:hihi

I think his long kicking is fine. But his short passing is a bit dodgy. Bit like Tuck and even Martin.

Exactly. His straight line speed looks great but twisting and turning might be more of a challenge. And kamikaze attacks are great but they are a gamble and he can overshoot the contest a bit and go to ground. Hopefully that can improve.

It makes some sense Match up wise, Morris is quicker than any other option we have to play on their smalls.

But when the match committee starts doing thinking deeply about the possibility of another Carlton belting are they going to put two first gamers in the back 6?

Maybe, it will be a big call.

He was the number 1 rebounding defender in the sanfl last year.

his kicking will be ok once he has some matches at AFL level under his belt.

At any rate, on what we've seen so far, our defense will have to get its act together about 400% if we are going to get close in R1.

Then our Midfield would have to be around the same mark.

My pre-draft mail was that we were expecting a mid to fall through to pick 15, whether that was Devon Smith, I can't be sure.

I assumed that when we agreed to swap picks with GWS that we knew who was going to be available to us and decided the swap wouldn't matter.

Then what was in it for GWS? Port wanted Morris as well so it would have made sense to do deal with them instead. At the time, I thought it was Taylor Adams who was on our radar but Smith could have come into calculations.

In the end, I'm pretty happy with Ellis because I think we have picked up a certain 150 gamer and someone who has the footy smarts to replace Deledio down back. So if one was to get cute, we have in fact added to our midfield.

Good will ?

Don't know but I'd be surprised if we would do the deal if we felt there was a chance we'd lose our top pick in the draft.

Kevin Sheedy and goodwill? I'm not so sure about that, I think GWS wanted to grab the consecutive picks so they could guarantee their first choices. We probably had several players in mind and felt letting one go to get the additional player was fair compensation. I don't mind the strategy, I think both players address an immediate need and both will be starters in round one.

After watching him in 2 games, I wouldn't even play him in the seniors at Coburg.
I'm pretty sure that every kick he has had either missed the target, dribbled along the grass or he kicked straight into an opposition player.
It's all well and good that he tackles hard and chases, but I don't care.
Besides his shocking kicking, he loves going to ground.
We wanted a Heath shaw and we got a mark zanotti..
He is no way good enough to get a game in round 1...
