Steve Morris F/S

yeah Grimes comes in as the medium/third tall option. One of Morris or Hunt misses out as the small BP.

Good to see balanced discussion about Morris the footballer rather than the "worst player in the AFL" type crap that was being said not so long ago.
He is a good footballer and a dead set warrior for RFC and was never deserving of the personal abuse he was copping at the time.

(FWIW - I consider him a valuable depth player (defender) who must make way for Grimes as soon as he's ready to return. But well played in the meantime Steve.)

As a back he's pretty decent, not great because of his disposal and he loses his feet, but you can play him and not lose sleep. He would start on a lot of teams.

I'd have to do some research, but as a small forward he probably was the worst in the AFL who played more than a handful of games. His defensive pressure didn't go anywhere near making up for the lack of offensive output.

Be interested to see the results of your research e.g. the other 9 of the worst 10 small forwards in the AFL ........ etc etc

He was good on the weekend
Went back into packs and helped out houli and Chaplin when they were under pressure
I reckon he deserves to stay in because the kamikaze style he plays worries out his opponents -

No research needed. The forward experiment was a complete and utter failure. Morris's game against Collingwood shows where he is much more comfortable. If there's no room back there for him so be it, he can be a good depth player in the backline.

He was very poor as a small forward, it was a failed experiment. They seemed to think that just because he was small and relatively quick and had done the job down back he was Jake King MKII. The big difference between Jake and Steve is that Jake was a small forward who was played out of position as a small defender, whereas it's the exact opposite with Steve. He was good on Saturday, but the reality is that he's a limited footballer who will always have to make way for better, more skilled players.

The run forward and slingshot style we employed suits him. We won't employ it every week though.

I would have thought a slower, more contested/defensive game plan would suit him more than a running, offensive game plan. Then again, it's hard to tell what suits him considering a structural exposure of his flaws render him immediately useless.

Hope they play him with Grimes.

When we have the ball, I reckon having a number of running targets for handball suits him far more than our styles based on moving the ball slowly and precisely.

I had a bit of a think about it and methodologically its actually quite hard to do! Morris is worse than any small forward I think of off the top of my head offensively. But it's hard to systemically identify 'worse' forwards, so I may be missing someone. Any suggestions?

That's true.

A bit stiff being dropped after one of his better performances this season even though Grimes is an obvious upgrade.

That will be his role until his contract expires. I reckon he knows it and is fine with it.
