Samson Ryan

He used to take marks. He can do it.
He plays differently now.
He used to jump at the ball, now he seems to always look for contact.
Hence the regular one hand efforts.
Looks like he’s being coached to improve one aspect of his game and it’s adversely affecting another part.
He was horrible tonight, but he can be better.

Not a dumb theory at all. They do train this. It's a regular feature at training in multiple drills where pretty much all the key forwards (pretty much with the exception of Tom (and this year only)) go up one handed to bring the ball to ground. Samson is doing what is coached and that is what is expected of him.
He played his role perfectly.

He won't be delisted. I reckon he'll be given 2 years as we have 2 ruckmen on the list & likely no one coming next season...

Thought Samson competed well.
Got involved in the marking contests and mostly succeeded in halving it / bringing the ball to ground.
Yes it would have been good if he’d taken more marks, but he impacted when he needed to.
Second competitive game in a row.

Us accepting his limitations and that he’s unlikely to magically transform into a Soldo type premiership ruckman will be key to enjoying his efforts in Tiger colours.

Watched him closely. The most disappointing part was there is no second effort. The moment he fails he just drops his head.
Got to get back in and want the ball

Apart from marking being his Achilles Heel the bloke can’t jump. All these young slimmer forwards that are trying emulate Richo all can run and jump. Ryan stands there basically on the one spot with his body crouched up and defenders the size of Daniel’s can outmark him. The reason why coaches tell him to try and halve contests is bc he can’t mark , jump and plays shorter than his height would recommend so he has to undo all his shortcomings by knocking the ball to ground. There were at least four opportunities tonight where he should’ve have taken the contested mark. Once his opponent fell over and he still messed it up, twice out marked by a shorter and the fourth he dropped it. Adding the z axis of leap to his game unfortunately will not be easy as it will be a big adjustment to his game, but it’s his only hope. It will even improve his ruck work, but this skill needs more athleticism, ticker, courage and hard work. Samson is the type that is happy to just amble around the field at a slow pace atm and he’s barely improved from his first season.
It’s unacceptable that a bloke 2m tall can’t jump and run at a marking contest because that would give up to a metre of extra reach , but because he’s so poor the coaches have to make him a contest halving forward. In the end contested marking forwards are the cream and if you don’t have this ability then you’re pretty well going to struggle in the position.

Yep. Gotta learn to make the second efforts, either in hunting the ball at spillage or more importantly simply using his frame to unbalance an oppo player or create that moment of space for the crumbers to work in. One would think that with Ivvy as ruck coach and the Nankster as prime playing example he'd be putting a bit into this area of game, but nothing as yet.

Just can't see him making it. Would back Coulthard to out muscle him in a 1:1 training drill.
