Rich V Carl - Match Day Thread

The Carlton nuffies said nothing around me when Cerra gets in the back frees other than "it was there", then stand up and scream, blue murder when I can't remember who it was, was driven into the ground and the Blue (might have been Pittonet) was actually lying across his back with our player lying face down on the ground.
Carlton supporters were booing the umps all night. Not enough 50s they screamed.

Not yet convinced, but quite worried that this dynasty may be over.

We had an awesome ride while it lasted.

It looked terrible, but but we lost 2 quarters of football. Controlled the 1st and the 3rd and did not take additional opportunities in the opening 25 minutes. Definitely need to make changes, we have a number of weeks to get this right.

Sorry probably still a bit prickly after last night.

Intrigued though why you'd play Balta back when we have Tarrant and Gibcus that did a good job there. I felt Balta nearly turned the game in our favour in the 3rd quarter. It was a strange game as all 4 quarters were totally different, but in the 1st we scored well due to matching them at the contest. The 2nd that broke down, and therefore we struggled to hold the ball forward, there was a bit of double teaming of Lynch / Jack. 3rd we dominated inside their 50, no 2nd man up so their inexperienced defenders then had to infringe which they did regularly in that quarter. The move of Balta forward was the catalyst for that. With Jack out now, there is no way we will move Balta back now.

Not sure I agree on Bakes either, reckon he's a gun at either end. Stack should be in the team.

I think you are focusing on the wrong thing, we didn't lose because of the defensive line or our forward line (in fact I reckon we beat Carlton within both arcs) but we lost due to the midfield being trounced and our ill discipline.
Thats ok Mr Posh so we shall what occurs next game. Might not be able to field a team with Voss & Co down with Covid.

Mathematically we can still make the 8 :)

That blonde headed umipre seems to ream us badly.
Aarts has a Carlton player laying on top of him and he calls for a ball up..
But soft vertebrae Cerra all night flopped forward and got paid 5 in the backs.
That's Selwood world record pace.
Cerra is a snowflake. Reckon we gave him a bit as well last night. A few went extra hard on him.

The most concerning aspect of tonight was the "MCG Match Day Experience" and service.

Arrived at the ground around 6:20, lined up at a bar in the AFL members reserve and got 2 beers to take back to the seats - maybe 7 or 8 minutes.

The next shout, was around 7:05, the beers came back just before the bounce - 20 minutes.

I went at 1/4 time - no chance I was getting beers and being able to watch any of the 2nd quarter. The queues were way too long.

I tried again at the start of half time - same situation. If I queued, would have missed the bulk of the 3rd quarter.

I tried again late in the 3rd, around the 25 minute mark, the bar was closing to any new entrants.

I can't recall any time previously where service was so non-existent.
And thats why you stay home, buy a Slab, be pissed as a Mute by halftime, doze off halfway through the 3rd Q and save yourself the embarrassment that was, as it turned out. Now, if it had gone our way then you just clear the eye's and watch the replay after the Live Game and NOT hit what's left of the slab as hard, easy peasy and I'm a Teetotaller !

Absolutely. Of all the issues we have - age, pace, structure, skills, midfield or whatever - our deplorable last in the comp inability to win contested possessions and clearances is our biggest problem. Half of the other issues become less relevant then if you’re getting first possession.

We have too many guys sitting back looking for a handball or waiting to make a tackle on an opponent who’s got first hands on it, that we get totally smashed at stoppages and clearances. It’s embarrassing. We got touched up by an average team tonight, simply because they got first hands on it more.

It’s time for this group to toughen up a bit and bring some more intensity, attack on the ball and pressure on the opponent in contested clearance situations.
YES YES and YESSSSS ............... what happened to that absolute brazen, fearless attack on the opposition player with the ball from a few years ago ? Expected some complacency after winning a few flags, but NOT to this extent, all that hard work and winning culture installed 5 years ago has literally evaporated into thin air. Definite lack of urgency in everything we do now compared to those days unfortunately. 5 years at the Top in this game of this era has to take it's toll no doubt, a few are showing the downhill skier signs of 15 years ago and need to quickly rid themselves of that tag or face the barrage THAT will come their way, irregardless of the great times they have provided of late. Me being an older soul will be more forgiving as I plan on living on the 4 glory years for at least the next 20 years, but the younger crowd wont be that lenient and I understand why, the "what have you done lately, as in 5 minutes ago" crowd doesn't quite have the patience of us Old Supporters who have seen plenty of good times. Hoping the likes of the Short's, Broad's, Rioli's, Shedda and Martin can lift to the level we have seen before and at least make us competitive week in, week out.

Not the sharpest tools in the shed carlscum fans. Cerra did it 3 times, I yelled out you diving muppet, funnily enough, it was true you only need to look at the footage, Every time he gets tackled drops his knees and pushes forward and the tackler just goes forward due to cerras forward motion.

Balta went in as a ruck and we kept getting smashed.
Noah isnt even close to ruck in Centre bounces yet, is clueless when it comes to timing his leap to be able to hit to advantage, much more likely to succeed from Boundary throw-in's as he can use his body at least to contest and natural leap against Bigger, Taller opponents.

That last quarter was just staggering. We got obliterated out of the centre and at stoppages.

Pretty hard for your backline to hold up when you’re losing centre clearances and stoppages like that, and such that the inside 50’s are 17-1, as they were at one stage in the last quarter.
I thought for a minute there that Kennedy had become a combination of Greg Williams and Kouta with the amount of ball he was getting, seriously ridiculous how easily he was getting the first touch and clearance time and time again, I know for a fact he's NOT that good a player or GWS are more cluless than I first thought maybe ?

Also, I know he is young, but I did not like what I saw from Hugo tonight. Absolutely butchered it. I hope that is his nadir and he improves from here because we need to see our young players coming through.

Probably a harsh assessment but geez you've got to kick better than that young fella.
I seriously think some of these blokes care and spend more time on things like image and Tik Tok/Instagram numbers and absolute *smile*-Haircuts/Tatts than they do their Football skills. Maybe that kid might want to at least LOOK like a Footballer (Jack D would be rollin' in his grave I bet) for starters and give the "Who's got the worst Mullet look going" a rest until he is an established AFL footballer at least ? .... just a thought.

Thinking back. WTF were we doing with Baker in the midfield when Prestia went down? I love Bakes and think he could do ok I'm that role. But he hasn't been in there all pre season. One of our blokes goes down and we revert to something we haven't tried all pre Season? Where was the contingency planning?
Especially when the chances of Meatball getting through an early season game without pulling (insert any soft tissue injury) are somewhere between 10 and 12%.... just poor coaching.

He’s not that good Steve Kilbey. And neither are Carlton. I don’t have them making the 8 still. Which is a worry for us….

Just a thought on our current situation.

I remember in 2020 when everybody was complaining that the shorter quarters were tailor made for the aging cats. Maybe it was really us that reaped the advantage of that. Maybe it was that which allowed us to eek out one more flag with our manic pressure game plan. Because since we went back to normal length games we just haven't been able to sustain that pressure for long enough to wear down our opponents.
