Rich V Carl - Match Day Thread

What can you say? Clearly a very disappointing start to the season, hope we can turn it around.

But let's actually have a look at the game.

In the first quarter I thought we looked pretty good. The forward line looked a lot better and there were attempts to get some separation. I liked Baker forward, don't think he is a mid, but small forward he looked fine.

One stat I always look at is the inside 50 efficiency. In the 2017 finals series we were keeping teams below 40% in terms of scoring shots from inside 50 entries. Those days are gone and the game has changed, not sure even that back line could achieve such numbers today. But Carlton had 48% inside 50 efficiency and there was enough pressure that a number of their behinds were at least partly the result of our defenders putting on pressure (but more on pressure later). Also, when you look at the inside 50 efficiency of Carlton it is comparable with what both Melbourne and Footscray did last night. So, on that score you would have to say the defence was ok. I'm not saying they are great, there is a clear need for improvement, but not failing.

Our inside 50 efficiency was 53%. That is a damned good number. I reckon a bit of luck there and I do think Balta up forward is the way to go, but not bad at all.

Some of the other stats are, frankly, a bit confusing. We won hitouts 29 to 26? Didn't look like it. Someone else posted that we lost centre clearances 14 to 12, wow, lot closer than what I thought I saw.

Clearly though the big one is the centre clearances and that is reflected in 64 to 40 inside 50s. Wow, smashed? Totally.

As everyone here has identified, our mids were slaughtered. In the last quarter I saw instances where a Richmond player would get the ball in the middle, only to lose it to a Carlton player who waltzed away with a nice clearance. I also saw tackles broken when the Carlton player got the ball. Not only did we lose the centre clearances, Carlton were able to move the ball sideways to a player in the clear and get quality delivery forward. Our centre is a mess and needs a lot of work.

One thing I notice we seem to do less than other teams is have a player run through a pack to get the contested possession. I really don't get why we don't do this as the momentum of the running player makes them harder to tackle. Must look at this more as it is just an impression, but when I see Carlton players running through packs, and also players from other teams, it can be effective.

One very revealing stat I saw on the score board, I think it was half time, was centre clearances for individual players. The first couple were Carlton players, but the next 2 were Nank and Soldo. Sorry, but when your rucks have the most centre clearances, you are in deep sh!t.

Our pressure game was simply MIA tonight. When we were at our best the opposition would fumble even when we weren't pressuring them, they just assumed the pressure was coming. Last night Melbourne were similar, Footscray players not under pressure fumbling because they thought they were under pressure. We need to get that back as we allow the opposition way too many easy disposals.

I am going to have to say I reckon Cotchin might just be done, time to retire a triple premiership captain, and in time for the mid season draft. I reckon Shedda can get back to some form, I don't think he is as beaten up as Cotch. I have to say I noticed Martin a lot less than usual tonight, he just didn't have the impact we know he is capable of. Hopefully Martin can get back to his best but he has had a tough time of late so give him time.

I would actually stick with both Soldo and Nank. Nank definitely looked off and Soldo needs more game time. I like 2 rucks. Although, I don't get why we would rest rucks forward if we are playing 3 tall forwards, rest them back instead.

I have to say I can't see that Aarts and Ross are AFL level. Aarts is clearly not a winger, KMac to replace him there and there is no other position I can see him in. Ross, try him in the middle and if it doesn't work then gone. Ross is too slow for the wing, his only potential position is as an extractor in the middle.

We need to get game time into the younger brigade. At one point I saw Gibcus and his Carlton opponent running around near the point post, bumping etc - the Carlton player simply looked massive next to Gibcus, just a much bigger build. Gibcus was fine and competed but he is not really ready for AFL yet. I would like to see them give Miller a go. There are a few younger players who need to be tried out - RCD, Dow; now is the time to give them a go and see if they will make it. Then look at the most recent recruits in Sonsie and Brown after they have a bit of VFL experience and AFL training.

So, in summary, not a good start and looked too much like we have dropped and are not coming back, but it is only Round 1.

That said, Carlton are improving. I do wonder why they have been improving at such a glacial pace for a number of years, but they are clearly getting better.

The less said about the stand rule the better, just get rid of it. Was more frustrated with our game tonight than the umpires but still not overly impressed with them. I do think the AFL need to do something about the players who crumple forward for a free kick when tackled, it is a blight on the game and needs to be stamped out. Clearly a case of needing better guidelines for the umpires on that one - not easy to solve but something needs to be done.

One last thing. Food outlets not open, all the outlets on the lower level of the Ponsford Stand (strange spot to be, but away game) closed. Queue to the bar was so long it passed another bar . . . which was closed. There is simply no excuse for this. I know they will whinge that they can't get staff, well I call b*llsh*t, offer people the work with better pay and you will get staff. Absolutely pathetic effort. The one food place I went to had most registers closed and one poor employee trying to serve everyone. Stock low, only no sugar coke, empty shelves. Simply sub standard and completely unacceptable. We pay enough to go to the footy, it simply is not good enough.

Thats just pathetic, where's the CEO to answer these questions I wonder ? Polo down at St Kilda beach again ?

So happy to stay home in front of the Ultra HD 4K 75", cheap decent food and drink and never have to deal with this substandard bullshite ever again.

Congrats for ruining the game day experience for the fans Vlad, Dill, SHocking and the rest of you imbeciles, keep messing with and introducing totally useless, embarrassing rule changes and you'll end up just having your Corporate Box faux-fans you so desire, who's only interest in being there is to be "seen in the company of ..... " ............ Barbi Doll botoxed airheads and your totally tatted body-roided man-bunned hipsters will dominate the scene for years to come.

For me, I would add in Tarrant is not the answer for an Astbury replacement. No doubt he knows the game but looks a little lost in a Tigers backline. Blood the kids and see what ambition will give
I can honestly say I think the Tarrant buy will be a complete and utter failure, yes, even after ONE game, happy to be proven wrong though.

I was curious to see Dusty's return from injury. Did he run out of gas? He faded badly. Add in Prestia injury. Add in Edwards and Graham playing poor games. Which segues to the 50m penalty. Edwards? What was his excuse? Grimes? That's U 11 level. At least Grimes switched on after his. Soldo's is slightly forgivable but Lynch ran to close and gave away another. Really poor performance to bring to round 1. I thought cotch played well. I'd be dropping Edwards and Graham first.
4th quarter turned into a mauling. Carlton were good. Their pressure caused turnovers and they preyed on them. Our new assistant coach didn't add much.
It's going to be a long season
Come on Brooke, you can do better than this Burner account, surely ! o_O

Geez, we dont half turn on our team do we. The amount of knicker wetting on here has surpassed previous levels I thought we wouldn't see again. Time for a break from this site.
WOW, One & Done right there ....... I think everyone has been pretty level-headed in their posts after such a shocking display first up and what's so bad about a little knicker-wetting anyway ?

Then again, Brightsiders will always be lurking in the Nooks & Crannies awaiting any opportunity to pounce and spruik their "all is good in the world" blather.

Bye Bye, enjoy the season and hope you find the Rosy-enablers you are seeking. ;)

Blew some cobwebs off last night so our 2022 year of reckoning will be next game against Giants on Sunday 27th. Tarrant & Gibcus twos all year only play when injuries hit. Get the old guard back in the backline. Need another couple of hit men besides Dusty so Parker & Stack in.
Huh ? I'd be happy to see him lay a tackle let alone become our next "Leigh Matthews"

Who was in the Ponsford stand last night? At the end of half time/early 3rd quarter, some guy collapsed in front of me. He put himself in the coma position while about 10-12 cops and seccos stood around him. not one of them offered assistance or made any attempt to assist. I reckon about 6-7 minutes passed. no ambos. Very little movement from the cops and seccos. I said more than once to them “do something.” But not one of them even acknowledged me.

Then the guy got up on his own, started walking, while the cops and seccos followed him towards the exit.i don’t know what happened after that.
You sure he didnt have a premonition of what was about to take place in the last 20 minutes of the game ? I was in that same position on my couch for what its worth, but only my Cat for company.

Big chance covid causes havoc with AFL in April i reckon.
DILL has "guaranteed" there wont be a single postponed game this year, just forge ahead into battle at any cost, TV rights, CEO pay increases and seeing if there's anyway possible that Meaty can be resurrected for a second try on Grand Final day is all that is on his agenda.

Well thats what Hammish told me anyway !

He’s not that good Steve Kilbey. And neither are Carlton. I don’t have them making the 8 still. Which is a worry for us….
Hell NO he's NOT and Carlton are far from a cert of making the 12, let alone the 8............ Bastages have shown "something" every year for a NY second and then died in the arse more times than Jesse Hogan has a puff-puff on the Wacky Weed on any given day you care to mention.

what happened to that absolute brazen, fearless attack on the opposition player with the ball
In my simple mind, I saw the recruitment of Matt Parker as the chance to create a big-bodied, hard-tackling, run-with player, someone to hunt oppo mids and let them know they weren't having it all their own way. If we didn't recruit him to add grunt around stoppages, what did we recruit him for?

It's fairly common for top teams to lose in Round 1.

Over the past decade, Sydney, Hawthorn, and Geelong have all had poor starts to a season where they finished in the top 4. We're just not used to it because we play Carlton every year.

I'd like to see us win by 100 points every week, but we at least showed Top 4 form for half the match, and that's a decent piece of evidence for early in the season.

I guess mine is a burner account then. I thought the former skipper was good. That pass to Lynch...

Reduced quantity / high quality.

We have a 10 day rest.
Almost a mini break.
Plenty of time to regroup and refresh.
Analyse the flaws of the final quarter.
We should hopefully have (touch wood) 50,000 to 60,000 Tiger fans at the G for our home game.
A cauldron.
Hopefully, the Swans pummel GWS, can be spiteful clashes.
Blues should be 1-1, Dogs 1-1, we should be too.
Hopefully Vlaustin and WebKam return, omit Ross.

Interesting in an industry that is all over any event or angle that is slightly out of the ordinary or interesting like seagulls on a chip, no mention, let alone discussion, of Dusty back from serious injury and grieving from the recent death of his father, was booed by the Carlton fans.

I can't say I cared much when they booed, but you make a good point. When Ablett Jr got booed after elbowing a couple of opponents and not getting rubbed out the media was all over it. But it appears to be fine to boo Dustin Martin.

Cotchin played well? 35% disposal efficiency, just 5 efficient dosposals for the whole game. That's ok he's not there for disposals but his defensive side. Had just 2 tackles and his opponents were running off him at will. It was an extremely poor game and really imo a continuation of his slowly deteriorating form of last year. Great servant of the club but has played on 1 year too long.

Only playing well for half the game is also part of the problem. It was happening last year, too. At our peak no one ran games out like we did. We used to smash teams in 2nd halves. We seemingly can’t do that now. It’s a result of an aging, battered senior core.

Thing is
In the back 11 last year
We had control of games but the opposition roasted us late in the game and we lost.

After the game on Thursday night I thought that we still in 2021.

To be honest I think with alot of our round 1 clashes the scoreboard has flattered us.
Many times the Blues have pushed us, came back and refused to lay down.
It's their grand final.
I am not worried.
I thought our movement off half back in the 1st and the change of plan in the 3rd was excellent.
Carlton were desperate we were lacklustre at times.
Let's see where we stand at they bye.
I am confident we will be entrenched in the top 4.

We need to recruit Ellis/KMac style gut runners for the wings f we want to persist with our game style. Ross and Pickett wont do it for you in the second half of the game.
