Rance

For those Rance defenders who think he wil be a key back, I have one question - Has anyone of you seen him take a contested mark against a key forward?

I've seen a bit of him at Coburg as well and I cant remember one.

I happily give the kids a chance if they show something.

Edwards, Riewoldt, Connors, Collins and this year Vickery and Post all showed something. A few of those players are a few years off making an impact at AFL level - they will be up and down but it should be worth the wait. Dont see how Alex wil make it - maybe as a tagger or a forward but the problem with him is that he is too poor a decision maker to run the ball out and too poor a contested player to be a key defender - Where do you play him?

I'm happy to give him more time down back - he has played HOW many games?!?!?

Disagree on some of your list too. Edwards has failed to cement a senior spot, and has often been a man looking for a position. Connors don't give a damn. Jack has taken some time to get his act consistent (and still is not there IMO).

Typical MB - will defend the half full type (or in Rance's case the empty glass type) as nauseum while they clog up the list for another 5 years.

MB you accept mediocrity too easily.
You might want to read your comments on pettifer

Read my post again T74. I dont say that my list have made it just that they are worth persevering with. Connors a prime example of a kid with talent who may not make it.

Vickery and Post however have already shown more than Rance. They show they can take a mark and have footy smarts. Doesn't mean they will dominate in years to come but they are good signs.

Rance has shown endeavour, athleticism, courage and a work ethic. l Dont think that is enough but time will tell.

Vickery and Post are better players than Rance, so not surprisingly they are showing more.

As for Rance, you say time will tell, but you want him gone after 1 season of seeing some games in the seniors. Thats not giving a heck of a lot of time for it to tell us anything.

Agree. Deficient footballer. We should try ship him off to the Eagles or Fremantle before his stocks drop.

I've been watching him for two years. If he cant be competitive against a tall forward there is no spot for him in the side. He's got the physical tools but not the smarts. That's usually terminal. Refer JON!

PS Post went at 27 and Rance at 18.

aware Post went later, but that doesn't mean he ain't a better player

You now equate Rance to JON? What did Rance do, not sign your jumper or steal your girl, because you are writing off a young tall on SFA development time.

Well if we are going to compare them JON has better hands, is better one on one and probably makes better decisions.

And stop calling him a young tall - he plays small and cant use the ball

the mind boggles lamby. he is 195cm 20 yo old in his second year in the system and has played 8 or 9 games and you're happy to write him off. i thought you were nuts when you crapped on about how "elite" pettifer was all those years ago and now i know it

btw he is an "elite" trainer

Wow, lamb22 slagging off a Tiger youngster.

I still think Rance can be your hard running third tall.

Rance worries me.
I agree with everyone who says he has great courage and enthusiasm.
But he needs to improve his skills and awareness.
Can he? I really don't know.

Rance definitely has some concerns, and unfortunately kicking is one of them. I don't like players that can't kick.

no doubt that he has some work to do, deficiencies if you like, but for the reasons i just mentioned he is fine for now

He's played around 10 senior games, you need to get some perspective.

Rance is tall, has a good engine, is courageous and moves well.

With good conditioning, he will develop core strength to hold his position in a contest and with good coaching his execution will improve. He is 19 - probably a long way ahead of where the likes of Moore & Thursty were at a similar age. (I know I am not exactly comparing him to Silvagni and Scarlett, but let's give the kid at least 1-2 more years.)
