Rance

Pears plays on a team which lacks depth in its defensive KPP options so he is guaranteed a game. Rance plays in a team that has lots of competition and had a serious injury this year.

Given the KKP defenders are one of the slowest developing position I wouldn’t be making any calls for at least 18 months about Pears vs. Rance.

Essendon lacks depth in KP defenders and Richmond doesn't?

mmm let me think, Essendon - Fletcher, Hooker, Hurley, Ryder - all better equipped than our best, Pears, Daniher both promising....throw in McPhee (who personally I do not rate) who is used there and you say they do not have "competition".

I think the Essendon options are a little better than our don't you?

Sheesh, too much competiton in the Richmond backline, heard it all now.

Reality is we have almost no legitimate key defenders.

We have a backline severely lacking in skill and IMO Rance only makes it worse. Unless he can dramatically improve his kicking and decision making or learn to really shut down opposition key forwards then he'll have a very limited career.

If he has value on the trade market I'd offer him up to improve our draft position this year.

This would be water tight Essendon backline that managed to concede a career high 6 goals to Jack despite their midfield being pretty stingy on the inside 50s? The backline featuring the legendary Dustin Fletcher who was given the awesome responsibility of manning Jayden Post in the first half?

P*ss taking aside, in the long run Essendon may have the better backline KPP in the long run, who knows, lot of variables in that question, if you want a lesson in the unpredictability of junior development see the 300+ pages of the Bling thread.

But in 2009 in you are a 191cm KPP defender looking to get a game you will have got more opportunities as Essendon. Hurley has been injured and is younger, Fletcher gets the soft jobs a rebound defender , Ryder has been in the ruck, Dainiher is a forward same age and raw. That leaves Hooker who is sufficiently different enough as a player that they played him on the same team as a second ruck.

You want to argue conceding scores now? Seen the Points Aganist column for the last few years?

You want to criticise one of the great modern fullbacks?

Agree that circumstances have created opportunity for Pears but Rance has the same opportuntiy at richmond given our lack of genuine size, Moore's poor form this year & Thursfields apparent lack of form (to terry). All those Essendon names mentioned except possibly Daniher would be playing in front of Rance.

Well you could compare points for against, but that wasn’t my point, by point was the Bomber defence was well protected by the midfield on the weekend and leaked like a sieve. I’d happily get in a debate on a lazy Sunday that Fletcher is a good player but he’s overrated … for another time.

On Rance if you’ve got a problem with ‘genuine size’ you’re hardly going to play a 19 year old are you? Rance has to beat Moore, who is older and has massive credibility at the club because of last year, a tough ask, or Luke, who for his faults is older, a decent player and a coaches love child. As for Thirsty, well if you recall Rance did beat him several times to a game before Rance’s injury.

I think you may be falling for the grass is green scenario with the Bombers, I’d be willing to bet if you compared VFL form then Rance’s is as good as any of the baby bombers and that he’s be right in the mix if he played for them.

Exactly, as I said in my previous post, he doesn't know how to use his frame to his advantage or play man on man in contests, doesn't know how to use the body. A defender without the knowledge of basic defensive skills. He is forced into a rebounding defender because of this fact but then lets himself down with his poor skills - by hand and foot. People are crying out "He's only young, give him a break, you're not real supporters... blah blah", these deficiencies in his game are real, the have been there since day 1 and he hasn't improved since he got to the club. If he can't hold down a key post in defence, he won't be in the game long with poor skills. People for Rance seem to be just attacking the man instead of the posts because they realise that these are the facts and they can't make up a rebuttal for him instead of "hes young"".

He is a young kid but the concerns on his playstyle are very real. At the moment he doesn't know how to take the body at all in marking contests or use his frame to his advantage, all he can do really is play the loose man. Unless he learns how to do this (which will take a lot of time as this should come natural to defenders) he will never hold down a KPD post. Also he isn't a great kick despite what some people think, would rate him a 4 out of 10 in that area at most.

He was meant to be that tall, big bodied CHB we really need to take the monsters, all he looks like is an oversized 3rd tall who doesn't know the mechanics of dendings who has poor skills. He almost looks like someone who has been played as a forward his whole junior career and then has been chucked into defence at AFL level.
At least you got one thing right.

Fair dinkum, kids 19 played 11 games & your talking about him being the all Australian CHB.
Patience is a virtue & young Rance will be a monster.
How many other young players can you name that have sent an opposition player to the bench in pain unable to return for
the rest of the game?

Alex has already taken out a few in his 11 games so far & he'll send a whole lot more to the medical centre before his last games been played for the RFC.
Love his attack on the ball & his work ethic behind the scenes.

Rance should be played Full Back or CHB. Why they're trying to make him into a wingman or running half back is not his fault

I wouldnt mind seeing how he goes at FB as we know he playes in the TAC there and well! Highly rateed Full Back from memory on these boards

He still needs size to hold down the key back post though so maybe he is 2 years from this

Has good closing speed though and would love him to make the FB position his with Luke at CHB Thursty in the pocket taking the 3rd kepy fwd (tall or small) and Moore playing the sweeping role ala Hodge / Maxwell

So in essence:
Thursty Rance Moore
Newman McGuane Tambling

He's the one who wants to play as such. This year or last he was quoted as saying he wants to play in a similar position to Richo and this was after Richo had begun playing on the wing.

I posted something similar a little while back.

Rance has to be played as a key back and develop the body skills he will require.

As you say Tiger, Rance will need some size to hold down a key spot. IMO he would need to get to at least 95 kegs.
The same goes for McGuane. He still needs to add some serious size. If he can get to 95 and maintain his agility he will be far more formidable.

Its a good back 6 I reckon. However it won't work if these boys don't get in the gym.
