Pick 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

Herr_Tiger said:
I hope neither Toy nor Wood are ie's or automatic choices

For a draft whose quality has supposedly dissipated, there seems to be a lot of good kids available, thanks to Bullus for putting us in the know

Neither nominated for the draft so cannot be picked.

I am tipping one of Toy or Wood (more likely Toy) will be picked up as a delisted player when it re-opens again after the draft.

Emma Quayle's Guide To The National Draft

RICHMOND

In: Troy Chaplin, Aaron Edwards, Chris Knights.

Out: Andrew Browne, Daniel Connors, Angus Graham, Dean Macdonald, Kelvin Moore, Jayden Post, Jeromey Webberley.

Draft picks: 9, 32, 34, 43, 88, 100.

DEPTH CHARTS

TALL FORWARDS: Jack Riewoldt, Tyrone Vickery, Todd Elton, Luke McGuane.

TALL DEFENDERS: Alex Rance, Dylan Grimes, Troy Chaplin, David Astbury, Ben Griffiths, Ben Darrou (rookie).

SMALL/MEDIUM FORWARDS: Robin Nahas, Jake King, Chris Knights, Brett O'Hanlon.

SMALL/MEDIUM DEFENDERS: Chris Newman, Steven Morris, Jake Batchelor, Brandon Ellis, Bachar Houli, Matt Dea, Steven Verrier (rookie).

MIDFIELDERS: Trent Cotchin, Brett Deledio, Dustin Martin, Shaun Grigg, Reece Conca, Shane Edwards, Daniel Jackson, Nathan Foley, Brad Helbig, Shane Tuck, Matt White, Matthew Arnot.

RUCKS: Ivan Maric, Tom Derickx.

DRAFT DAY: Things are starting to come together for Richmond, and although teams don't necessarily follow a linear path to success, the Tigers are maturing nicely in most parts of the ground. There's nothing they desperately need, although their midfield numbers - as good as Cotchin, Deledio and Martin are, with Ellis to perhaps evolve into an onball prospect - could do with some boosting. They have been heavily linked to Northern Knights onballer Nick Vlastuin this year and it's easy to see why he would appeal: he's a competitor, one who puts his head over the ball, gets on with things and plays consistently well. He'd be a solid pick. Close-checking defender Aidan Corr is also in contention at No. 9, fellow backman Lachie Plowman would have to be considered should he somehow slip down the order, Jackson Macrae is a rough chance to still be around and so is key forward Kristian Jaksch. Jackson Thurlow is another the club has been tied to. Thurlow, a tall running defender from Launceston, may reach them at pick 32. The Tigers are planning to take four picks and have been looking at Orren Stephenson. He'd provide immediate, senior back-up in the ruck, although Vickery can obviously play in the ruck and Elton is developing as a ruck/forward. Busy onballer Tim McGenniss, Dandenong's best-and-fairest this year, is one the Tigers could try to grab in the 30s.

what time does the draft start on thursday?

doors open 5.30, but the fox live feed starts at 7, so we'll probably call out Grundy Pants name about 7.32?

If Callum Twomey’s article on the AFL website “Gun Ruckman in Tigers Sights” is correct then a big decision is to be made by the tigers at pick 9. Well, not so big in my opinion.

As the late great Jack Dyer said “A good big man will always beat a good small man, unless the small man is very, very good!”

So unless there is a gun midfielder available at pick 9, which unless Wines somehow slips through will not be the case, then we should be snapping up Grundy. It’s time to stop playing it safe with our first pick and go for a potential match winner.

Wines looks the perfect fit for us IMO. Hoping he slides.

Yep he was my initial choice Oldie all the way back on page 1 ;D but me thinks if Melb pass on him he could well get to our pic 9

Melbourne fans were told at a draft night that Wines isn't rated in their top 4. I reckon the link is media driven on the whole Viney/Wines connection.

Good to hear then Tigs, Wines would be a terrific get for us and have no doubt we'll also land 2 very good players at pics 32 and 34....pic 43 in the hand of the gods but gotta say im pretty excited for this draft as theres enough talent on offer to improve our list...

Really would love to get some pure silk too add to the midfield an love the sounds of players like mc Rae, Menzel an co but geez wouldn't taking Grundy solve a lot of list issues an future drafting delemas

Yer, I've been a bit of a critic of Wines but I'm watching a bit of him as we speak due to that info. I still think we go Vlastuin though. Just think we are set on him.

Very good summary by Emma Quayle.

As yet, haven't seen The Age today, but if she's done that for every team then it's very well done.

Just saw the 3+ min vid on Grundy on the AFL site and man he's overhead marking is a delight, so strong and very good one on one...
To see the vid on Grundy go to the afl website, click on the article gun ruckman in tigers sites then under the pic of grundy taking a mark there will be some links, the one to click on is titled massive raps on grundy.....

Going to be a tough choice at pic 9 if say grundy, macrae and wines are all available....

Id personally go Wines ahead of Vlastuin but as i stated in the above post do u think we would still go with Vlastuin if grundy and macrea were both on offer at pic 9....

I haven't even heard this McGeeniss bloke Emma is talking about, not surprising seeing i don't watch the juniors but i haven't seen his name come up any any draft calculations... surely this can't be correct, can it???

Bound For Glory Phantom Draft has us taking Stringer at pic 9.....Rory Atkins at 32....Nick Graham at 34 and Cameron Banfield at 43
http://boundforglorynews.com/2012-afl-phantom-draft/

9. Richmond – Jake Stringer
Height: 191cm
Weight: 91kg
Position: Midfield/forward
Team: Bendigo Pioneers
State: Victoria
Likened to a raging bull, Jake Stringer might be the biggest risk, but he has the biggest upside of all draftees in the upcoming draft. Playing predominately as a tall forward with spells down back throughout his junior career, out-muscling and excelling in a one-on-one situation, Stringer’s contested marking is his biggest drawcard. At 191cms, he’s not tall enough to be a key position forward in the AFL, but as a third tall or potentially a midfielder, Stringer is a dangerous prospect. Stringer does what Cotchin does in the midfield and what Riewoldt does up forward: rack up a mountain of the ball and kick bags of goals on a regular basis. Had it not been for his injury concerns, he could quite easily be the number one pick – these types of players don’t come around very often.

Trying to dampen my hopes on Grundy Pants (listen for a bloke breaking into 'Tigerland' on the fox coverage if he gets to 9). Heres a stab at my top 10

1 - Whitfield
2 - Grundy
3 - Menzel
4 - Wines
5- Plowman
6- O,Rourke
7 - Toumpas
8 - Vlastuin

9 - leaves us to choose between stringer, macrae, garner, mayes, assuming Tigs dont get too cute this year

10 - Daniher (wish Richo would get breeding)

Thats a pretty nice dilemma. Stringer would be top 3 without the busted leg wouldnt he?

The big questions in this draft im looking forward to answers to are

How far could stringer and menzel slip?
Who gets Grundy Pants?
What number does Spencer White go (like i said, this years waylon manson)?
Whose there at 32?
Whose the big bolter (I reckon dogs might reach for Membrey, they get all sentimental about KPF's since chris grant left)
Whose the big slider (I reckon Jake Stringer, although Vossy came back just as good?)
