Pick 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

Spencer White - It was certainly a pity that Spencer missed the u/18 carnival because he has some outstanding qualities for a man who stands at 194cm. Not only can he run like the wind and jump like Nick Naitanui, but he can slot goals from the boundary and pluck marks three deep in a pack. Just for the record, White has a handspan of 26.1 cm, has a running vertical jump of 1 metre, a standing jump of 82cm, a 2.89sec 20 metre sprint time and an exceedingly high goal kicking conversion rate of 75%. Despite the fact he originally missed out on an invite to the combine, his late burst of 30 goals in his last ten TAC cup matches earnt himself a late reprieve, and the results speak for themselves.

So how is it that an athletic and agile goal kicking forward fail to feature in the top 100 junior prospects in the country? Well if the truth be known, White has only just begun to click, and it would seem that his running capacity has been severely hampered by a long running battle with asthma. Recent tests have revealed that White has only been using 60% of his lung capacity, which would go some way to explaining why his workrate has been questioned by many industry observers. Once the problem was identified and an appropriate remedy prescribed, White stepped up to the plate and dramatically improved his output, so much so that he's gone from undraftable to potential second rounder.

The recent headlines have been pushing the Buddy comparisons pretty hard and there are definitely similarities, but those who are expecting Spencer to burst onto the scene might be a little disappointed. His defensive game is almost non-existent and his endurance levels still need some major work, which incidentally may hold him back from playing the odd ruck cameo. With his pace and huge mitts, it would seem full forward will be his position, and he certainly has enough tricks up his sleeve to become a major focal point for any team needing an athletic KP goal kicker.

As far as Richmond is concerned, I'd almost certainly take the plunge with 43 and would consider him earlier if some of the other options were off the table. It could even be a moot point because he may well get snapped up before our second selection, despite the risks and obvious development time, players like Spencer White don't grow on trees.

Brett Anderson (Inside Football) on SEN mentioned that we would still overlook Stringer and Grundy if they were available and most likely take Vlastuin, but he has received some texts in the last couple of days saying that we may look at taking Kristian Jaksch.

So am I right saying that we will take 4 kids, 2 delisteds I.e toy an wood an 2 rookies?

Not quite. We have four main list spots available. 5 if Newman is put on the vets list. Room for 2 rookies, but maybe only one if Newman is placed on the vets list (could be wrong on that though).

Kristian Jaksch was a good CHF for the Oakleigh Chargers.
Not sure if he's star material though.

Though, at 194cm, he's the right height to make it at CHF.
And looks to be able to kick regular goals.

Just not sure whether he's in that elite class.
Maybe!

And we do need a CHF.

So far rumours have us taking Garner, Grundy, Vlastuin and Jaksch. Love it. Round and round she goes, where she stops, nobody knows.

It could be the 1st year that no one in the outside world really know who we actually get.
I wouldn't be surprised if Garlett or stinger or Menzel gets there name called out

Another rumor today is that we are considering Lonergan with our first rounder.

I've been hearing he'll be the draft slider. Maybe we are hoping for him at 32?

Thanks Bully. Ive got my fingers and toes crossed. Just out of interest, did Buddy, Jack, Darling etc have a defensive game as juniors?

Emma Quayle's article today predicts a dissapointing draft for us IMO, but I reckon FJ has 'em all bluffed.

Im gonna pick the quadrella, with my heart rather than my head.

9. Grundy Pants
32. Taylor Garner
34. Jackson Thurlow
43. Spencer White

It will be very interesting watching on Thursday night, if there is any delay in reading out our pick at 9, that might prove that we had more then 1 in our sites.

Wines looks the perfect fit for us IMO. Hoping he slides.

All will depend on who GWS go with their first 3 picks. Whitfield certain at #1, but they could go quite a few options with their next 2.

Toumpas no certainty @ 2 or 3 and may slide to dogs.

IMO Melbourne should pick Grundy if available @ 4. This would allow Wines to slip somewhat.

I hear that Melbourne are tossing up between Toumpas & Wines.

I hope neither Toy nor Wood are ie's or automatic choices

For a draft whose quality has supposedly dissipated, there seems to be a lot of good kids available, thanks to Bullus for putting us in the know
