Pick 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

Great read Bullus.

In light of what Brett Anderson from Inside Footy is saying any chance you could do a write up on Nathan Wright?

Dont laugh Tigs, he had a hell of a lot of love on here did young Jared.

Happy to say, that's one guy leysy had pegged correctly.

I'll still take that bet Greasy Trays. Polec will come good.

I have changed my tune, I am really warming to Grundy.

If Grundy is available at Pick 9, surely we must take him. He has been an excellent junior performer for the last 2 years and a dual All Australian. I cannot recall any phantom draft anywhere that has him outside of the top five. I think he would create very healthy competition for Ty Vickery and would improve him as a footballer with some genuine competition for his spot. There should still be some very useful midfielders available with our second round picks so if Grundy is available, just get it done Francis !!

Brett Anderson from Inside Football seems to think we will go Vlastuin, Wright then Atkins with our first 3. Eat sh!t Essendon. :hihi

Not at all guys. Could actually be quite the opposite.

FJ can be a stickler for not wanting other clubs to let on who he's interested in. Doing a lot of interviews with the player & having plenty of contact with his family/Mgr is the first way to giveup who your keen on.

Good post daisy. Been at least a couple of well documented cases about Francis keeping his cards very close to his chest.

Not for leysy Scoop. Two years on from the draft all this still holds true. Think in another two years it still will ILO.

Is anyone else worried about Polec's kicking. His bent knee action that doesnt straighten means he will be a perenial floater of the ball.

This is critical when trying to get the ball quickly to the forward line either to a leadup target or especially long one-on-one.

Combine this with his one-sidedness & there is certainly enough to be wary of for whoever recruits him INO.

Also has a lot of good qualities but is far from a lock to be a valuable long-termer for navy.

Rory Atkins - When in full flight, Atkins is a joy to watch. He has that uncanny ability to wrong foot the opposition and charge through defensive lines, often impacting on the scoreboard. His attacking game is also enhanced with strong overhead marking skills which makes him versatile enough to act as a dangerous forward when relieved of midfield duties. At the draft combine, he finished equal first in the kicking test and in doing so, illiustrated his credentials as a proficient dual-sided kick, and playing for Calder, registered a repectable 62% overall kicking efficiency. Atkins capped off the season winning Calder's b&f and his strong finish to the season propelled him back into draft calculations - probably not a moment too soon considering his indifferent form at various stages in the season.

Perhaps the biggest wake-up call for Rory would have been his axing from the AIS and then being left out of the Vic Metro team for the majority of the tournament. To his credit, he bounced back strongly in the TAC Cup with a 37 possession game against Sandringham, and continued that form over a 5 week stretch that saw him chalk up another 3 BOG's.

Given his wildly fluctuating form, one wonders whether Atkins main problems lie somewhere between the ears. When he's full of confidence and flying, he looks every bit an AFL footballer. He's a good decision maker, he's got a bit of swagger about him and he's street smart in a footballing sense. Unfortunately, when he's down, he can look disinterested and apathetic, and perhaps more concerning, completely void of any sort of defensive intensity.

Ensuring that he's giving 100% each and every game will be the litmus test for any team that recruits him and there will need to be a strong emphasis placed on his workrate, particularly if he's struggling for form. His 20 metre sprint times also appear to be on the low side which worries me a for a player who relies heavily on sidestepping the opposition and streaming forward.

So where does that place him with pick 32, 34 & 43? I think he's still a fair way behind the likes of Nick Graham who I believe might still be on board, and if we're going best available, I think Atkins might be pushed even further down the order. At pick 43, maybe, but that would be contingent on some others being unavailable.

If we don't take Rory at 34 he'll go next pick. Hence my suck *smile* Bombers comment with Anderson saying we are keen on he and Wright with 32/34.

Anyone else think he's modelled his kicking action on Nathan Brown?

They certainly need mids and he seems a decent fit, I just have a hunch we'll see some better credentialled footballers available at 34, and they may not necessarily be mids.

I'm getting the feeling a few of the KPP will go quite early. ie Corr, O'Brien, Wood. Atkins is probably my favourite of the 2nd rounders so I guess either way I'd take him if available. You're right though he does need to get more consistent and pull the finger out defensively.

Those 3 would be on my radar, fingers crossed one slides to our pick.

Did a little mock on what the "experts" are hearing and had Corr at 13, O'Brien at 20 and Wood at 25.

There is an article on the AFL site saying that Grundy might fall to us should GWS not pick him at 3 - though they do point out that we are still keen on Macrae and Vlastuin.

This is a bit like glimpsing a receipt for a honda XR75 on your dads chest of drawers a week out from christmas.

I have that flaw in my kicking action (amongst many) and sadly its true, you do float the ball.
