Pick 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

Golly I really liked what Yeates I think said about Garner ;)

yeah, basically if he doesnt get the ball with a royce-esque flying mark, he chases the fella down who does 'like an animal'.

I actually like the fact that he made All Australian TAC with one season. Im an acute optimist, but it says to me his improvement trajectory is steep. The blokes on here who have watched him have discussed his 'lack of exposed form' but I reckon thats as close as we are going to get as a smokey these days.

I cant imagine him going before 9 or after 32. Hes our man.

. My pick would be Plowman, but he would probably get picked before us :(

My concern is plowman is a man-child. One of the men-who-peak-too-early and their body size in juniors allows them to dominate at stoppages? I could be wrong, but Im pretty set on T.Garner at 9 now.

Oops, wrong bloke. Jesse Lonergan is the one i have man-child concerns about.

In Garner's interview he states he was surprised by him form this year ??? FJ from what I understand likes to see guys form over 3 years so I wonder how Garner's form stacks up in that respect ?

Hasn't been in the system that long I don't think. First year of TAC.

Regards to wanting players who can turn games we have Deledio, Cotchin, Martin, Riewoldt etc that can turn a game in a matter of minutes. We need dependable players that don't let us down at crucial times as well.

We need class players who can win matches. Too easy to shut us down with our current team. Tag Cotchin and Deledio out of the game and we are no chance. We need another match winner at 9 and Vlastuin is not it.

FJ picked Matty Dea who barely played 3 games of TAC cup!

But he saw plenty leading up to that. I think he went on record saying he was disappointed that Dea went on to play in the TAC, botched his plan to rookie him as an unknown.

Exactly. Also when Nahas is quiet against the better teams we struggle. Need some more match winners.

Garner didn't do much testing at the Combine, but this is what was recorded.

Height: 186.9cm
Weight: 76.9kg
Skinfolds: Top 8%.
Handspan: Top 40%. (22.5cm)
Arm Length: Top 48%. (83.6cm)

For those interested in Vlastuin;

Height: 186.6cm
Weight: 85.7kg
Skinfolds: Top 27%
Handspan: Top 35% (22.7cm)
Arm Length: Bottom 19%. (80.5cm)

He didn't test in sprints and verticals.

Got a 13.15 in the beep.
Top 41% in vo2 max.
Ran the 3km in 10:47. (Top 40%)

Dont like Vlastuins minature arms. TG all the way.

On testing, Spencer White nearly lept as high as Nic Nat and has hands as big as Stewie Lowe. At 195 and 95 with monster hands and leap and big bags of goals, hes got to be worth a punt if hes there in round 2 surely?

Have never actually seen Garner play but went to school with his older brother. Very athletic family all brothers are good footballers and cricketers.

Garner would be my choice on the grounds that he represents something that is in short supply at Richmond, but in saying that, I would be giving him the most thorough medical checks known to man. Griffiths seems to have gotten over the shoulder issues (touch wood) so that's heartening, but then again, one couldn't really say that he's been thoroughly road tested.

As for Vlastuin, I'm still not 100% convinced he'll make it as a high production midfielder, cameos yes, but the jury's out on whether he can consistently produce 25+ possessions as a fulltime onballer. He's in a similar position to Ellis in that regard.
Don't get any chance to follow the prospective kids but always interested to follow the discussions about our possible choices.
Just on your concerns about Garners shoulders Bullus. We seem to have done very well in managing Griff through his shoulder probs, it now appears that we just need to get some consistent miles into him to allow his natural footy talent to develop through.
Do you have any concerns that we couldn't manage Garner through his first couple of seasons and thereby reap full benefit of his talents?
How well would you rate him if there were no injury concerns?
Would he be a top ten lock if the shoulders were spot on or more of a ten to twenty five type pick purely depending on a clubs perceived needs?

Garner is supposed to be a bit of a sports prodigy....simply good at everything, a bit like Bartel.

If white is there for our second round we should def take the punt. He could turn out to be a bona fide match winning fwd.
