Pick 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

I bet Stringer ends up at Geelong.

There will certainly be some sliders, no doubt.

That compo pick we got as part of the Tambling trade might be a real winner for us.

Hope so. Massively overrated imho. The next A Banik and T Keays. Both dominated underage footy on the basis of body size only. In senior company really struggled. Even without this issue I wouldn't touch him. I have massive questions marks over his leg's ability to handle an AFL workload. Very similar break to N Brown who got hot spots at least twice when he tried to step up his training. Never had the same speed or agility again.

Garner and Plowman are both better players anyway.

We dont have to take a mid this year if we are getting Tyson next year :hihi :hihi

We do need mids at least another 3 classy ones for both inside ball winning and also some class outsider distributors.

The list plenty of holes in it still every where.

Mids, Talls, Rucks.

The more i read the more i wish we hadve traded into another pick before our second rounder .

X2.

Watch the Pies clean up this year. I think they will grab at least 2 sliders with their 3 first rounders.

not sure a HBF (at 192 not KPD), who could possibly play mid is what we should go after at 9. there should be no possibles at 9. there are gun mids all over the place, who will fit straight into our squad. reckon we should take one of these. Vlastuin to replace jackson from rd 1 would be great, and fix our tagger with no skill issue, as well as add class to our inside mids. (actually i like him more that wines as an inside mid)

Im sure we tried Craig :devilsmiley but no takers for some of our average spuds to get us a pic around 15 to 25....
On the pies yes they'll do well but people have to remember that the 2 players they bring in need to be better than wellingham and dawes to be ahead, wellingham i rated and think he'll do well at WC, dawes imo was overrated but personally i think they'll land some very good players with 3 pics in succession 18, 19 and 20 (they currently have pic 21) but its widely touted that Adelaide will lose their pic 20.....

For sure. The Pies have somehow managed to get better in the short term and the long term. It's a staggering offseason.

I think the Pies are running their player personal and list management strategies based on the NFL. Very New England like. And the NFL is the closest model to ours. Within three years we will have franchise player and trading on draft day. The Pies are already heading that way.

Just in this draft alone the Pies have been able to judge the talent pool perfectly (10-30 are super even) in getting the picks they have. Along with getting two cheap ready made players (Young & Dawes) and putting three low salary earners into the cap for the next two years.

which duds of ours do you think would have worth a 1st rounder?

It's about being creative. Getting involved. Being the third parry that helps other clubs get the deal done.

not too many 1st round picks on offer for anything other than 'good' players i wouldnt think. perhaps trading pick 9 for a couple of picks in the teens, but as you have said this draft is pretty even so other clubs probably wouldnt have been interested.
fact is you have to give quality to get quality, and until we are successful we wont get overs for many of our players, say like dawes.

Taylor Garner- It's easy to see why Taylor Garner has attracted some serious interest from Richmond, he's on a par with Menzel for pure talent and game-turning ability, and to top it off, he's got an insatiable desire to hunt down the ball and the ball-carrier. He also represents the perfect opportunity to plug a significant hole in the forward line, a position which hasn't really been filled since Nathan Brown's untimely departure.

Given that Garner played his first game of TAC football at the start of the season, his rapid rise to top ten status has been nothing short of remarkable. His performance in the national championships was noteworthy on two fronts, it firstly showcased Garner's brilliant marking ability, uncanny goal sense and manic defensive pressure, but it also gave us a glimpse of his fierce determination in the face of severe discomfort. That he had to contend with a shoulder dislocation in every one of his matches, indicates a steely resolve which would have impressed Francis Jackson no end, and to simply pop it back in and resume playing speaks volumes for the boy's mental preparedness for football at the highest level.

Emerging from the u/18 the carnival battered and bruised, Garner resumed hostilities in the TAC cup, and it wasn't long before he landed awkwardly and popped his shoulder for the umpteenth time. Considering he had just made the grade as a AA half forward flanker, it was an opportune time to hang up the boots for the season and make an appointment with the surgeon. The shoulder reconstruction seemingly went without a hitch and with his name now in neon lights, the recruiters have begun their routine risk assessments.

Taking into consideration Garner's playing style and the highly publicised injury concerns, one would probably place Taylor in the high risk category alongside Stringer and Menzel. It's not so much that he has structurally weak shoulders, but more an issue of his frenetic style of play increasing the chances of more work being needed down the track. Whilst his greatest strength is his ability to fly into packs at seemingly impossible angles, it also becomes his greatest weakness given there are no guarantees as to how he'll land. Remembering the Ben Griffiths scenario, it would seem almost a matter of course that Garner will be booked in for work on his 'good shoulder'.

The other important factor at play is whether Garner will find his niche as a half forward flanker or whether he'll make the transition to part-time midfield. If Garner is eventually selected, it will mark the moment when Richmond entered the brave new world of picking players based on their upside instead of opting for the safe and steady types. Personally, I can understand the switch in philosophy, but in the case of Taylor Garner, I can't help but think there are too many unknown factors at play which make this a highly speculative selection. Considering that Grundy, Macrae and Plowman also have a significant upside, Taylor Garner becomes the undisputed high stakes option.

considering wellingham was traded for pick 20ish we would have been very very lucky to get one of GWS's 1st round picks for Nahas.

Bully that write up has set me thinking he might just be the one. Does he have more x factor than Vlas ?

I still think we go the 'safe' option at #9.

There will be sliders at this draft and we should still be in the hunt for good talent with risk factors with our 2nd rounders.
