Pick 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

The jungle drums have been pretty strong on this beat for the past three months.

It's so strong that it makes me think it's a smoke screen.

Scoop.

Who would you take with pick 9 this year?

My dream result is Oliver Wines. Will be a gun. Hard nut with class. Think we have about a small chance of it happening.

If gone, Jackson Macrae who I think will still be on the board.

If the jungle drums are true and we take Nick Vlastuin, I can live with that. But we need to add more variety to our midfield with our next few picks.

Dean Towers, Matthew Haynes or Dayle Garlett if he is on the board late. We now need some pace and X factor through the middle. My real favourite that I want in the second round is Josh Simpson. Reckon he will become one of the best from this draft. Better then Stepen Hill.

I think Melb grab Wines at 4. Besties with Viney, and if that isn't good enough reason for Melbourne, both probably have the most AFL ready bodies in the draft. They can hit the ground running, something the D's desperately need.

About time I saw someone else throw Deano Towers name into the mix!

If he is in the Richmond midfield, did you think he would be sat on? I think he fits a need with us.

Would you prefer Sam Mayes in that role?

I think Mayes will be gone by our pick probably landing at the Dogs at number 6.

Nick Vlaustin interview goes for about 4 mins....forward to 31 mins and 50 secs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g72MPzC--ws&feature=plcp

At 48 mins and 40 secs is the last interview with Spencer White (western jets)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g72MPzC--ws&feature=plcp

Also have some highlights of Spencer White, good pair of hands and a nice fluent kicking action....At 1 min and 15 secs u would think it was Buddy with the one hand pic up and running around that boundary line taking bounces, just has a real buddy likeness about him....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ayCKpUJiDk

Spencer who is a power forward, 195 cms/90 kgs (18 yrs old) came runner up in the TAC cup goal kicking with 36.12 in 16 games......
Where will Spencer white go in the draft? personally think he'd go around 30+ if he happened to be their at 43 id pull the trigger as he looks a likely prospect....

Spot on. Ellis/Conca types are ok cause they wont be total busts so the recruiter won't get in trouble but when you have too many of them it becomes very predictable for the opposition.

Deledio still stands out in the middle cause of his pace, we need another 1 or 2 jets who can also win the footy.

Dayle Garlett is that player, I reckon many recruiters will be dusting off the eggshells in a few years time, particularly if he lands a club like West Coast or Collingwood.

Have good look at this years premiership midfield. The only outside runner I can see is Jetta. I would not be calling Kennedy, Bolton, Jack, Parker & Hannerberry as jets.

A little bit misleading considering they also have Goodes, Bolton and O'Keefe providing some first class run and carry.

Goodes rarely plays through the midfield these days and no way does Bolton and O'Keefe have the outside pace that Jetta does.

I am a big fan of us picking up at least one pack run and carry player in this draft for all the reasons others have mentioned. IMO the GF was a bit of an anomaly for the swans. They lack run and carry and that is why they lose so consistently on the MCG. The Granny was the first time they have won there for a number of years.

They all have tricks. They all have time with the ball. They spread well. Jack has pace to burn and Hannerberry isn't a slow poke.

It's a perfect blend of an inside out midfield.

We need some more variety. Vlas will be a fine AFL footballer long term and if we take him I am fine with it.

Does that 6 have better quality and variety than Cotchin, Deledio, Martin, Foley, Grigg and Conca?

Goodes has dropped off a little but can still be found bursting out of packs (albeit less now than in his absolute prime), O'Keefe is another that has dropped off marginally but he's never been afraid to take a few bounces, Bolton being in the same category as O'Keefe.

Very few of these guys can be compared to Jetta for pace, in fact very few players in the competition could catch Jetta in full flight. If we're talking absolute jets of the competition, most clubs only have one or two, Geelong's champion midfield consisted of Bartel (slow) Selwood (slow) Kelly (moderate) Chapman (moderate) Ablett (fast) and Johnson (moderate). Other factors like agility and burst speed need to be taken into account in any case, for sheer running power, a fringe player like Wojo would have outsprinted all of the above.

Jude Bolton? Run and carry? I don't think so.

Bolton may not be the runner he once was but he's never been afraid to cover some turf over the course of his 300 games. Not a speed demon but a guy who's endurance allowed him to dash down the SCG wings and take a few bounces for good measure.

We can get seduced by the speed thing at times but an effective run and carry game doesn't always rely on raw speed. Even our own Matthew Knights wasn't the fastest man at the club, yet his running game was without peer during the nineties.

Be that as it may, Jude Bolton hasn't been a run and carry type for a fair while.

The draft is a lot like Xmas as a kid to me ,use to get really excited about a certain tonca truck or donkey kong game been under the tree, then just get disappointed when it wasn't there, so now take very little interested in watching juniors play, coz been a spoilt brat of a kid I wanted about 20 presses an was so bloody upset when I only got 4 especially if any were hand me downs... So now there is no letters to Santa, just a little excitement on the day, a bit of reading of the instructions an what potential uses they have....do however greatly appreciate the views of other posters thoughts on the kids.....anyway I reckon this Membrey may be worth a look ;)
