Pick 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

I like the look of him, quick off the mark and a good turn of speed.....excellent overhead and another classy left footer....

Gee if we could land pics 12/13 (likely to be pic 14) off GWS for our pic 9 and perhaps a player we could surely snare 2 from this lot; Kennedy, Vlastuin, Garlett or Menzel....

***On talent alone Menzel, a forward-midfielder, has the credentials to be taken inside the top 10 at the ND next month, but clubs will first need to be completely satisfied that his LARS surgery won't be a major issue in the future...

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

The internet rumourmill has apparently given Garlett the thumbs-up for his Combine interviews, I'd be almost tempted to roll the dice at 9 on that news.

On talent that would be a good thing but I'm not convinced we have him on the radar.

Yeah, I'm not getting any vibes in that direction either, the players that keep being mentioned are the likes of Vlastuin and McRae. Kennedy wants to stay in Adelaide, so we can run a line through his name, Wines looks to be an early pick (possibly Melbourne) and Menzel and Stringer probably won't be Tigers due to injury clouds. My gut feeling is Port will take a homegrown talent, possibly Mayes, and O'Rourke will go before our pick.

Garlett certainly makes sense at pick 9, if McRae is off the board I'd definitely put his name into the ring.

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

If he interviewed really well, he will be a top 5 pick.

Should be in the mix for our pick.

Performance in the interviews is overrated in my opinion. Some of the questions being asked and the conclusions they then determine from those answers are off the mark.

The interviews should be aimed as evaluating if a player has the right sort of social skills to mix with the playing group and take direction from the coaches in a positive manner.
Gaining an insight on how they handle disappointment is also important but some of the things they get asked are just rubbish.

Are you able to give us an idea of these questions, at all, Gus?

Sounds interesting.

To be honest I'd rather not.

Fair enough.

I was surprised to read your thoughts on the questions asked, as I would have thought this would be an area that all teams would have really gotten on top of...

And that's what I hope we went through with him. If he went well to those questions then he should be in our sights. This boy is everything we lack. Talent is huge.

You seem to have a strong view on the questions asked Gus, to the point of knowing what is being asked.

Do you think we are getting full value from our interview process?

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

Gus: Can you give me some info on how Broomhead tested?

Thanks mate. That's reasonable apart from shuttle not being great. Thoughts on him as a prospect?

I don't have a clue what each club asks but some of the questions some clubs are famous for have no relevance to football, potential leadership or identifying suitable talent.
You want to see that a young player has the social skills to move away from home and to be able to adapt to a new city potentially away from their family etc but some of the questions are more in line of a wanky American consultant level than just a normal identification process. I get that each recruitment is a massive investment for all clubs but some think they are a lot smarter than they really need to be.
It becomes a test of the player managers ability to prepare players for these supposedly tricky questions that help identify future club leaders than it does on focusing on a players ability to adapt to a professional career.

Probably not the place to go much further.

He can play but I'm not sure what position he might go.

I should add that his jumping was well above average.

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

I have heard that Ben Kennedy has a bit of the Elliot Kavanaugh's about him (not to the same extent though) by not wanting to go interstate. Might go to Port Adelaide. He won't come to us at pick #9.

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

Ben Kennedy is going to be a ripper. Good left foot, zippy around the packs and can kick a snag.

No doubt Port will take him with their Pick 7. Going to be a gem though, would take him in a heartbeat.

Re: Pic 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

I'm not a fan of garlett from what I've seen . He has no defensive side to his game and on the attack he is a little overrated. I'm not saying he's no good but I would rather quite a few before him with our first pick and also I think we could get someone similar with our second round pick. I think for your first pick you choose someone who you think has the most potential and for me that's stringer. A lot of people would of had him top 5 if he had not had his injury ( some no 1). It was a bad break no doubt but people have to remember that many afl players don't have great years after a serious injury. Before injury he was a potential top 3 and we should choose on potential. There is a saying in the NBA(basketball league in states) better to have two superstars than 12 all stars. We should take the risk and choose the guy that a lot of recruiters think that at his best he is the best of the draft.

More relevant when you only have 5 guys on the field at the same time instead of 18 I think.
