Pick 29: Shai Bolton

It is really hard to know what a fair deal is.

Would you prefer 3 players in a deep draft at 9, 10 and 17 - 3 first rounders or 2 players at 3 and 23. Easy decision when the top half dozen often stand out but this year it’s not straight forward . Pick 3 would want to be a special player imo.
If we're getting 5 for Rioli, a teens pick for Baker and another teens pick from Brisbane for points, it's easy for me. 1, 3, 5 is FOS, Lalor, Jagga (or possibly Armstrong). We'd still have two teens picks, pick 21 and the Graham compo, which will be 22 or 40.

If all three main deals slide on through, has there been a better non-expansion haul?

Essendon’s 8,9,10 noteworthy in recent times?

Lol at Essington loading up on the uncertain and ultimately weak covid draft.

Freo got 7, 8, 9 in 2019 (Young, Serong, Henry), although Henry was a matched bid.

agree that looks pretty enticing but with your scenario and with the Bolton adjustments we could end up being 1, 5, 9, 10, plus three mid teen picks and pick 21.

Is pick 3 better than 9, 10 and 17 in a very even draft. Between 2001 and 2014, 200 gamers from pick 3 are tracking at well below 50% hit rate which surprised me, I count 5 out of 13 players so far for that 13 year period. There are some dam good players in that list but plenty who maybe aren’t at that absolute elite status.

I am not advocating either way, but it’s an interesting debate.

Eg, Dusty year, pick 3 wins massively but in

year 2010, was Sam Day better than Caddy, Prestia and Atley.
Year 2012, Plowman nowhere near Wine, Vlaustin and Josh Simpson.
Year 2016 Mills compared to Hopper, Weideman and Doedee
Year 2017 McCluggage compared to Scimshaw, Brodie and Berry

Maybe pick 3 worked in 2016 and 17.

The expansion clubs had enough rope to hang themselves with a lot of those picks.

I reckon you can get too cute when holding on to so many picks.

Plus - Silvagni

Hopefully it’s different for us.

Ruthless - draft a new goddam midfield who can grow together. Big boys who relish the contest.

That should be the first priority this year, then identify needs beyond that.

Interesting Shai got the biggest reference in Marlions speech. I wonder how much his retirement is impacting Shai's desire to leave the club and move home.

Ok. Excuse my ignorance re the star quality of the upcoming draft. I appreciate our earliest picks should be used for midfielders with star potential. If we end up with two teen pics together and they are still available would it be worth taking the Whitlock twins. As they are brothers it would be more likely they would stay together in the long term and the typical sibling rivalry could mean they devolope better and quicker as KPP's. Thoughts??? Keep in mind I have no real idea.

I'm over the Fiora over Pavlich pick and the Tambling over Franklin pick.
They have been surpassed by the Billings over Bompmytelly selection.

Was Toche involved?

Fremantle's current 3 x 1st round picks would equal nearly 3,900 points

To put that in perspective the Jason Horne Francis deal netted North Melbourne around 3,800 points in a trade.

Fremantle need to keep a first round pick and Richmond may be able to trade with Gold Coast for their pick 20 (1st round pick).

Lots to play out between now and trade time.

At least going by Justin Longmuir's comments Fremantle are interested -

Fremantle Dockers coach Justin Longmuir says Richmond Tigers star Shai Bolton would make his team better

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir says Shai Bolton would make his team better, as the Richmond star prepares to lodge a trade request.
Bolton wants to return home to Western Australia for family reasons and the Dockers are best-positioned to satisfy the Tigers in a trade deal, armed with two first-round picks in this year’s draft

Reports emerged out of Melbourne emerged on Monday the dynamic forward had asked to be traded. These were disputed, but it still appears likely Bolton will tell Richmond he wants to move home if a trade can be sealed.
Longmuir told 7NEWS on Tuesday night he had not met with Bolton personally, but said the 25-year-old would be a boost for his club.

“I haven’t, he’s obviously contracted, so respect that contract and in the end the ball is in his court. I haven’t met him no,” he said.
“Clearly someone of his ability and someone of his experience would help us, and help us become a better team.
“Those things will play out later in the season and like I said before, it’s in Shai’s hands at the moment. We will wait and see.”
I also took on your point about the Gold Coast pick which in effect may become a trade for 19 to them and 17 for us.

I’d leave out the points valuation and the value of their three first rounders.
Shai is our best player.
He is going to get better if we can get a decent tall playing forward and if we can get a better midfield up and about.
If that occurs and we keep Shai..

He'll still be a flashy inconsistent individual. Bloody exciting when he's on and frustrating as hell when he's not.

Let's not degrading him because he wants out.
He is a superstar.
Top 10 in the comp.
He will make who ever better.
Got nothing to do with whether he wants out or not Zippers. I've said the same thing often enough over the years. Shai's got the ability to be one of the best handful of players in the comp. But he's flashy, inconsistent, petulant and individual far to often. Different player style, but could be Dustyesque if he were more of a team player than a Shai player. It's more disappointment as to what he could be over and above what he already is.

Pick 5 for Rioli is a no brainer. It’s overs but he is contracted.

Freo need to find 2 picks in the top 10 for Bolton. I am happy to give back our Graham compo pick. This is where we need to stand our ground.
I agree re:Bolton. Some peeps on here are ok with 9 & 14 for example. Not me. Hopper cost us 8 &. 31.

Agreed. Blokes with his bag of tricks who have multiple 25+ 3+ games are rare. Mid career too.

And let’s not forget our players have MPL: Multiple Premiership Loading. It’s real. Clubs want it. Especially ones like Freo.

Anyone remember how excited we were when Kane Johnson arrived? An actual premiership player walking into our club in the middle of his career! We could hardly believe it.

Just because you have been saying the same thing for years doesn’t make your opinion any better. Just means you have been consistently wrong.
