Olympics 2012 - London

After all these years, I still get lukewarm over the Olympics.

Still reckon they're a home for ex-fascists - Kurt Waltheim, Juan Antonio Samaranch & John Coates.

The most interesting study for me through this period has been exploring the ancient female Heraean Games at Olympus that pre-dated the male games.

Don't let anyone tell you that women didn't participate in the ancient Olympic Games. In fact, the women invented it.

I love the Olympics. And I get a reminder every 4 years of how much of an expert I am in so many sports.

I guess you've got to ask if people are prepared to pay more tax so we can feel good about ourselves every 4 years. Personally, I'd rather build a school or hospital.

One of the better posts read on PRE for a while.
I could really care less about sports I never watch anyway.
Why should I pay for it?

Some athletes have said the lack of gold medals is because not enough money has gone in the preparation for the Olympics.
Saying that they only are able to compete part-time because they need to work while other nations are able to do it full-time.

;D Yep, me too.

A drinking game where you had to drink everytime a channel 9 commentator said 'unbelievable' wouldn't last long.

Still got my money on Edwina in the Individual Show Jumping.
2 clear rounds so far.
She's on target.
Go Girl!
Final round tonight.

Personally loving the Olympics, great run by Usain Bolt. Also great run by Steve Solomon 2 pbs aged 18 and in the 400m final, huge effort, and the coach did not want him there.

Probably an unpopular opinion among many but think we are going ok, we have 20 medals and probably win maybe at least another 10 with cycling, sailing, track, hockey, basketball, bmx, water polo all chances to win medals. Unfortunately we have being accustomed to winning and 12 silver is not deemed good enough. We are like Greg Chappell when he sqid he was batting all right I just keep getting, we are doing good we just keep coming second.
swimming apart from Magnussen we were not really expected to win good. The Poms keep getting in our way in rowing, cycling and long jump otherwise we may have won 6 more gold. Still great efforts though.

Have enjoyed watching in the last week but stupidly have never invested foxtel as never home enough to justify it but with a week off for the Olympics I should have. Channel 9 coverage has being ok and on a par with channel 7 and acknowledge it is hard to cover when there is so much happening at once but some things stagger me.

- Ken Sutcliffe is terrible just really is clueless and provides nothing. As does Karl, Cameron and Leila, all are really embrassing,
- Michael Slater is terrible at the diving nd talks over his co commentator on irrelevent stuff, Brayshaw and Russell should stick to footy. Looking forward to Bill and Tony at the synch swimming.
- Amount of replays, the swimming was live at 0430, replied again at 7 then again at 9am, but never any highlights of weightlifting (one of my fav sports), minimal of archery, boxing, gymnqstics.
- Shocking error of judgement with Anna Meares starting her keiren race, Ken S comes on says we are going to commercial break for a special reason. The special reason an interview with Prince William and Harry while live spo is on ( and involving an Australian big contender), just record it qnd show it at a later time. channel 9 were so happy with the interview they replayed it twice more, but still no weightlifting or even sailing ( which i know is not great tv viewing but we are doing ok in it).
- The womans marathon was covered well and a great race, but disappointing not to show the Aussies come home, Lisa Weightman (Fleas cousin was only 4 minutes behind, trengove 6 minutes , I know hard to show Benita as she was struggling with injury) instead they showed a replay of Karls big noting himself with Daley Thompson and Michael Johnson which was shown 3 hours earlier.

Apart from that the sport has being good, looking forward to more aths, relays will be good as with 1500. We are doing ok on the trqck without medaling, several athletes setting pbs. Watt jump may not have being too expectation but still a silver and nobody seemed to be jumping well.

Also why are channel 9 have two stqtions covering the olympics and both shown the same thing, why cant one channel show something different.

Apparently the agreement 9 have regarding GEM and their usual station is that they can't broadcast two events at the same time. Fox must have a different agreement, because they have 8 things going on at once.

Hate that we only have foxtel on one TV in the house, as its in the main room dad controls the remote and i'm stuck with channel 9 most of the time.
The worst is when finally a good sport is on and 5 minutes into it they cut to something else.
Does the CH9 website have the option to watch sports not aired?

agree with all that MK33. both the Aus effort and the coverage. Geez channel 9 are bad. I think the terrible coverage, worst I've ever seen, is a product of 2 things: 1) Channel 9 are third rate. Jingoistic, unsophisticated, amateurish, lazy (Ray Warren must wander off to the pubtab between shifts), xenophobic ('that Chinese girl' ?/!1) underestimate their audience (they'd show an Aussie with a chance to make the top 40 in the walk over a Dreamteam game), just amazingly bad. and 2) the deal with their mates at Foxtell. Bottom line result of those 2 factors is they don't really know or care about their audience. Such a shame, I love the Olympics. If I had known it was going to be this bad, I would have forked out for Fox. Listening to people at work who have it makes me want to cry.

One thing I've learnt from these Olympics: Channel 7 did a pretty solid job.
