Olympics 2012 - London

What a disappointing olympics for Australia. Another gold favourite Mears gets blown away.

The Australian athletes just don't seem to be on their games this Olympics, I'm not sure what's gone wrong for many of them. It's rather like supporting Richmond at present.

I think we have come to over rate our sthletes after the sucesses we have enjoyed at recent Olympics.

I still well recall Montreal, Moscow, LA and Seoul.

Too many twits and farcebook mentalities.

Streak nailed it. We're just punching at our weight. It's a big world and we're a small part of it. Gone are the days when we were one of seven countries with a swimming pool AND a tennis court.

I do too. The Montreal performance was what created the AIS. It took a good 14 years for that to really bear fruit. Unfortunately the memories of that have faded, the coaches seem to have become contented and conservative and no one is thinking outside the box any more. There'll be a review after this, and it will probably take 8 - 10 years before we see the effects of that.

I think we have also seen what happens when you stop investing in creating champions. Since Sydney, the Governments of either persuasion have certainly cut back their funding of olympic sports programs.

Winning gold medals at this level costs dollars, it is as simple as that.

I guess you've got to ask if people are prepared to pay more tax so we can feel good about ourselves every 4 years. Personally, I'd rather build a school or hospital.

Agree TT. The commentators said some of the Chinese athletes train several hours a day every day. of the year. If it's that important to them good luck but I hope we never go down that road. I'm still a fan of when the Olympics were for amateurs. Pity it was abused.

Congrats to PRE's own Hannah (well evo's rellie really but we'll claim her too) and her rowing partner on making the Olympic final. Oarsome effort girls.

yep, we were saying tonight, anyone who makes an Olympic final has done something incredible. I want to see some gold medals like everyone else, but this Olympics is teaching me to be more philosophical about it all.

Agree completely. In addition anyone who goes through the AIS should have to cover their own costs HECS style. My wife just paid hers off last week after 11 years. She is a school teacher and gives more to society than most of our athletes but has to pay her own way.

I completely agree with you on this. It makes no sense whatsoever that our university graduates have to repay a debt yet graduates of what is essentially a university of sport get a free ride when many of them earn plenty as a result of their sport. I remember hearing Todd Woodridge trying to justify it on radio once. It just defies logic.
